I took out my personal shield to see what it could possibly upgrade to, but when it went into the upgrade window, it instantly converted to a plasma rifle.
In case anyone was wondering, yes I checked everywhere for it in case it was just misplaced by the upgrade tool.
I will submit a ticket for this, but was just curious as to whether this is a rare or common bug. Thanks!
I suppose a weapon COULD be considered an upgrade from a shield...
I would normally agree as I am from the school of thought that "the best defense is a good offense," but it actually turned into a weapon that is inferior to my current one.
I have never experienced this problem, but as far as I know, when you put in an item in the upgrade window, it is turned into a "dynamic" version of that item. That is particularly noticeable if you do it with one of the old infinity-mark scaling gera like the original Aegis sets. This allows them to be upgraded in the first place.
If this happened to you, it might imply that there is an error in whatever does the conversion process, linking the old personal shield with the weapon you got.
You can try a support ticket, but I don't know if they can and will undo stuff like this.
A Bug ticket or bug post will likely be only helpful if you remember the exact item you put in originally and the item you got.

I would say, "What did I win!", but already have that answer...a cruddy plasma rifle. I suppose something more along the lines of "I tried using Cryptic's upgrade system, and all I got was this crappy plasma rifle!"

Are you sure it was a personal shield and not a warp core? The shadow ship's (I think) warp core would upgrade to the experimental Romulan Beam array.
Oh yes, it was my personal shield, and it converted to a plasma rifle, and I did not even actually upgrade it, just put it in the upgrade window to compare before and after stats. It was at that point it disappeared and I noticed the new plasma rifle in my inventory and the shield was nowhere to be found.

Ummm......
The best defense is a good offense??
It was the Personal Covariant Shield from "Empress Sela," formerly known as "Preemptive Strike."
More firepower is my main philosophy of the game, but why would you not at least use a shield? Or have I just misunderstood your post?
