This is just an opinion. Nothing more. If you disagree then feel free to express so. Again this is just an opinion.
Players please be aware of this latest Cryptic win a ship event might cost you more than you think.
Simply put, you can spend well over $50.00 for a ship worth only $25.00.
According the the news article, Cryptic implies that you could win a ship if you buy only a couple of R&D packs. While this may be true, and indeed I am sure it is to some limited extent, MOST, IF NOT ALL, PLAYERS will have to buy a minimum of 20 to 80 packs to stand a reasonable chance of wining a ship.
A single R&D Pack costs 300 Zen or $3.00. A pack of 4 R&D boxes costs 1000 zen or $10.00. That means you are paying 5000 zen or $50.00 cash for 20 chances to win a ship that is in theory only worth no more than the average cost of $25.00 for a T6 ship. If you want more chances, it's going to cost you even more. To stand the maximum (if there is such a thing) chance of winning, 1 80 lets say, you're going to need to spend $200.00.
Now does that sound like a good deal to you when a single T6 ship costs about $25.00 (2500 zen)?
It's your zen and your money and it's your choice what you spend it on. If you need the R&D materials and don't mind the bug where you don't get the lobi* consolation prize, then it might be advantageous to you to do this. Otherwise, its simply not worth it.
*(Some times you only get 1 Lobi per R&D pack despite the news article stating you get 10.)

Absolute speculation and Completely unfounded but its out there and therefore players should give it some consideration if not just to discount it.
**While there is zero (0) proof of this, it has been speculated, and evidence is mounting to support this theory, that in order to lull players into thinking that the odds of wining are greater than they really are Cryptic periodically announcing winners in the game every few minutes. When in fact most of those alleged winners are not really players, but are instead BOT players owned by Cyrptic. This tactic misleads players into believing that they stand a greater chance of winning than they actually do. Its just simple gambling 101 psychology.
What happened to those unique forum ranks I paid for?
Its not called a Gamble for nothing (though officially its not called that for legal reasons) personally i got it after 12 boxes, so $30 pretty par for the course and if I recall that is the cost of a single T6 ship in the store so yea, pretty much on target.
Course I opened another 20 boxes after that because I'd bought them and can use the mats, didn't get a second one but then as said, I can use the mats, the bug is a bonus really thought without the incentive I likely wouldn't buy the boxes for the mats either.
The good think about the R&D promotion copmared to Master keys and Lockboxes is that R&D Promos give you something that's actually useful on their own.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
Well, just heard of someone that has spend 175 USD on boxes and got nothing at all.
That is completely false.
They got $175 dollars worth of Lobi and Crafting Materials.
(which BTW they can sell on the Exchange and make quite a bit of EC's)
They just didn't get the ship.

Also, I've bought quite a few of the R&D boxes during the various sales events of this type, and have never received less than 10 Lobi.
So odds are that too is a completely false conjecture.

I decided going in that I was only going to buy $30 I boxes. Win or lose. I also could use the materials on my main since I reached level 15 in all the R&D schools.
Luck was in my favor and I won on the 4th box. I still opened the rest for the materials.

I also want the contents of the R&D boxes. Which I opened another 60 of.
I got the materials I need for my crafting, specifically the research catalysts of which I now have enough to finish my quest for epic gear.
I ironically I have enough lobi now for the JH dreadnaught, which means I can also get the upgraded frigate pets.
So how is this a bad thing?
