Too much grind!

So I figure now is a time for some common sense talk about grinding. Recently the game has made a series of changes designed, in the developers words, to make less rewarding content relevant by reducing the rewards obtained by the most rewarding content. This has prompted more than a few players to recalculate the amount of grind in game in light of nerfs to their favored, and most efficient, methods of grinding.

And that's actually good. You should always reassess whether the game is a good entertainment value for the time and money you are looking to invest. And not just because of nerfs that remove the ability to grind up rewards at twice or three times the developer anticipated speed, but for any reason at all. New game came out that you might be interested in trying, reassess whether this game is a good entertainment investment. Played through all the content and there's nothing new to explore, reassess whether this game is a good entertainment investment. Stubbed your toe, reassess whether this game is a good entertainment investment. That's all well and good, that's all sane and normal, that's an intelligent course of action to follow. I'll go even a step further. It's perfectly legitimate to come here to the forums and tell us, and the developers, all about it. If you are enjoying the game less because of the grind, express those words here. If you're leaving because the amount of grind makes the game an unappetizing way to spend some time, express those words here. In all honesty, the majority of criticism expressed on this forum is worthwhile and useful.

But here comes an honest plea for sanity. Don't spin some hair-brained conspiracy theory about the death of the game when your only evidence is personally disliking a decision made. People have been predicted the death of Star Trek Online for 5 years, I think the first prediction came when lifetime subscriptions were made available during beta. If STO survived the "can't even buy coffee cups" era at the tail end of Atari's stewardship, then you're not going to convince me that them making updates to the game is a sign of imminent doom. Also don't insult the game developers either, whether you feel your insults are fair or not, it's still very stupid. These are the people who have the power to solve whatever problem you're complaining about, don't make sure they lose all sympathy for you. Oh, and stop saying that "grinds kill MMO's" it just convinces people that you either have never played an MMO before, or you don't know what grinding is.

Whether this game gives out enough of a reward to hold player attention, allow them to ascend to the content they wish to play at an appropriate level of skill and experience, and maintain a healthy game is a very complicated question. It relies on many hidden variables and a lot of balancing. Anyone claiming to have an easy answer is probably lying to you, or trying to push an agenda. And while player mood is certainly a very important variable and can be very important feedback, it is unlikely to be effectively heard when it gets uttered from the lips of someone who gives every intention of only wanting to vomit all over the forum.
