So I've seen in the chatbox alongside a persons name there will be a link type thing in a rarity color that if you hover your mouse over you see the item dialogue. I always assumed that when you earn a special item it automatically apears in the chatbox for others to see. But it just dawned on me that this may not be the case, that this possibly is done by the player to show others their new toy to show off (rather juvenile imho).
Is this done by the player on purpose or is it automatically done on some occasion?
If player does this, how is this achieved, and why really?
Other than system announcements when a person wins a ship, this is done by the players. Simply drag an item from your ship, person, or inventory into the chat box and it will show up.
Usually, it's done to help out other players when they have a question on what they should equip for a certain situation. Other times, it's just showing off.
Members of the CSP will often talk about loadouts and what specs and procs to go for especally with consoles so this is often the fastest way to do it and allows the person asking to get exactly the same thing (especally as some of the fleet consoles have 4 or 5 variations of the same thing with minor variations.)

Alternatively press Ctrl and left click the item and it will automatically be posted into the chatbox.
'why' ranges from bragging to showing weapon stats and the like.

Yesterday some kid started showing off on ESD. I told him that, other than to stop it, his equipment was crappy at best.
He challenged me at 1v1 saying "challenge me... so I can pound your ship into the ground"
I accepted and sent him the challenge.
he called me "loser" and chickened out. Good for him probably, not that he would have killed me.
Yeah just ignore these folks, Borg NPC would consider them unworthy for assimilation.
