Kit upgrades?

wraithshadow13wraithshadow13 Member Posts: 1,728 Arc User
So.... uh...

Why can't we do this yet, and when will we be able to? Are they going to remove them in some other (unnecessary) update? Will it be a part of some new grind to grind on top of all the other grinds to grind?

What's going on with the kits, that keeps us from upgrading?

Considering how long upgrading has been available, should we be worried about what they're planning to do here?

I think it is because we can't craft them. There is no "school" for them. We can craft everything else, so even the consoles we can't actually make are just classed as consoles for the upgrade system. If, and hopefully when, they add a kit and module crafting school we should then be able to upgrade them.

The devs explained on one of the podcasts that the reason why kits haven't been added in to being able to craft/upgrade kits and kit modules is primarily based on the way they coded things.

See, when they added the upgrade system pre-Delta Rising (with us being able to go up to Mark XIII ultra rare), they basically put a new version of each item that was coded to be upgradeable into the game. So, when you slot any older item into the window, the item is converted into the new version.

Kits obviously haven't been coded in to be upgradable yet. Keep in mind that kits change in number of slots as you increase in your rank.

    Ensign/Lieutenant (Mk I-II): 1 slot
Lt. Commander (Mk III-IV): 2 slots
    Commander (Mk V-VI): 3 slots
Captain (Mk VII-Mk VIII): 4 slots
    Admiral (Mk IX-XII): 5 slots

I would assume that it would be harder to code changes to kit upgrades than to say consoles or weapons due to how many variations can exist.

As for Kit modules, keep in mind that when slotted, these become the old powers that we had pre-built into the older kits. I'm sure they will eventually add the option in to upgrade these. It just takes them time and they have to do it when they find the time to.

I hope they are coming sooner than later.

New Kits came, and then the new crafting system showed up and didn't include new kit modules. The upgrade system came to be and kits were ignored again.

I get that there is some complexity behind this, but the new kits being "in existence" was certainly planned before the crafting system and upgrade system were finalized (especially as we were told new crafting was "only a beta version" (or was it alpha) weeks before it was released.

We have been 4 months since the upgrade system was released, several more since new crafting, and several before that since old kits were removed from crafting entirely. It would nice to see some final touch ups be done to the kit functionality, perhaps when S10 launches.

Agreed. It would be nice if they finished things like this before releasing it. Or before releasing a slew of other unfinished things...

Still though, thank you for the answers. It does seem like a massive over site considering that there is a tree for ground equipment and that all the other ground gear is upgradable.

Kits where always a bit behind. In the old days we had mk12 stuff for a long time and still were sitting on mk10 kits before embassy and spire came out.

I for one am quiet happy with the fact that kit modules can’t be upgraded. It would mean yet another 40 items on my toongang. Especially annoying when you exchange modules often.

But I would not worry here and never doubt PWE’s ambition to earn money. When earnings from other gear upgrades slow down it won’t take Cryptic long to act.

I'd rather have my kit abilities up to par with the rest of my gear. My main is an augment, so his ground kit basically plays into that, so it would be nicer to have it at the next level since he's on elite missions.

It just seems weird that they would do it for everything except the ground abilities.

A simple way to fix this is to allow all ranks to have 5-slot kit frames, but to restrict the rarity & Mk. level of kit components to player rank. So, instead of the existing scheme, the 5-slot frames would be graded & equipped thus:

    Ensign/Lieut.- common, MkI-III
    Lt. Comdr.- uncommon, Mk IV-VI
    Comdr.- rare, Mk. VII-IX
    Capt.-very rare, Mk. X-XI
    Adm.- epic, Mk. XII-XiV

It might be possible to mount a more advanced kit if it was obtained as a drop, though I cannot recall when I ever got a drop class ahead of my current rank. With this ranking, though, there would not have to be as many variations of frames & components...
