What is the Arc Client?
Install Arc

Reinstalling windows - do I need to download whole game again?

Hi I have just reinstalled windows. that awful POS which becomes so riddled with errors after a few months of normal use.

Do i have to redownload the whole game using arc?

I have tried using the backup i made of game files but it does not work. it crashes immediatley when cryptic splash screen appears.

10 gigabytes is a lot and will take ages.

Yes, you'll have to download the game again plus expansions. On a slow net connection that can fairly take a while, it's one of the most annoying things about MMO's.

I had to re-install the entire game when I got this new computer back in September last year, I'm glad I've got fibre optic internet now or it would have taken days.

Yes, you have to reinstall the whole game again, except if you have an older game installer on your comp already. If you have, you would save a great amount of time.

NO! you don't need to download the game again.

Here is a pro tip for you buddy, that will save you couple of hours downloading.

Get a external Hard Disc or borrow one from a friend if you don't have it,

go to Computer-Local Disc (C)Program Files-Star Trek Online or where ever you installed it,

grab the files - Cryptic Studio and the other one below - Star Trek ST.25.20121026a.8,

copy them on your External Drive - reinstall Windows, download the game launcher,
and start it so that it creates the Star Trek Online file in program files,

take the files from External disc and copy them back to your Pc in Star Trek Online folder.

It worked for me i did this couple weeks ago.

(Don't use the ****ty Arc just get the game launcher only)

thank you for responses. I knew that there should be a way to avoid having to redownload and I wanted to know someone had done it before.

confirmed - yes it can be done. i'll just write what i did for future reference. also save bandwidth for people in countries with slow interwebz

i couldn't find the game launcher/download so i just did it with arc (LOL)

first - copy your files to backup drive.

2 - after reinstall windows. install arc, download and install STO there.

3 - copy folders "cef-cache", "local data" and "Star Trek online" from the old backup folder "star trek online_en" (or which ever your language was) into your new location where you are installing game, replacing the new ones.

(Arc is so lame, it suddenly changed my language to turkish - who knew they had this language - and as a result I had to reinstall it)

There appears so be some kind of magical link between the STO-exe and arc and system that prevents me from just using the STO executable direct from my backup.

but these folders contain game data (and your screenshots in localdata). so they appear to have bypassed that requirement for magical link.

    hurray, got my free items.

however, sometimes for me, the game won't launch with arc, just use executable in the STO game folder instead
