I love this game as much or more then Alot of people in this community.
But because of share holders, corporate bureaucracy, and the inability to conquer the various programming issues and compounding bugs with this sort of oversight I say we attack the problem at the central issue!
You can't *fund* the various issues if you can't Monetize it, or at least show on a fancy graph how quality of life improvements and how those would directly correlate to sales and a higher subscription rate.
So I Humbly Request the Option to *donate* funds to such things.
Perhaps if we can Raise enough money we can have our UI overhauled, or Various bug fixes with weapons, load outs, and Disappearing items.
I realize this may sound off the wall... But I don't see any other way for the current infrastructure, or (future for that matter) to address these issues because you can't exactly *sell* us a UI fix, or a bug fix, But perhaps you *can* accept Donations towards such projects.
IE when the fund level reaches such a point you kick start a project or perhaps a strike team in between projects and whatever down time people may be having to get these things nailed out.
Another Side effect of a new policy like this is you could actually Gauge what it is we as a community want.
As an example of such successes, Take in consideration of what Star Citizen has done by being Crowd funded. I think we can learn some lessons here, and make this entire Enterprise Better. *Profitably*
I believe adaptability, and keeping a finger on the pulse of the market are needed if this franchise is going to continue to march forward.
Feel free to add your own suggestions as to how to fund things that can't be monetized.
It's a brutal fact. But work requires 2 things. Money for the workers, and Money for the capitalists who are shelling out their professionals.
Where is that money going to come from?
Fixing the UI isn't profitable because they can't sell it to us, and in the short term it wouldn't increase the subscriber base. So on a cost effectiveness graph it wouldn't be a wise choice to invest in. As would many needed projects that are needed to modernize and keep this game afloat in the long run.
My suggestion merely highlights an option to circumvent the entire issue, get results, and has tremendous potential.
From the corporate stand point, that stand to gain Public reputation, Long term results, a bigger buffer in between black and going into the red, and a Higher quality game to peddle onto the masses.
And as for who would donate if they can just buy zen...
Well Not everyone needs to by more in game items. perhaps they've maxed out their builds... and perhaps they love the game enough to donate for Higher quality of life upgrades for themselves and everyone else
You dont need to donate money just subscribe to the game or buy some stuff in the cash shop. Its the same thing. That is our "donate" button. If you like the game you give them money that is how freemium works :P

if you dont want anymore watsits then give it away or delete it lol but seriously why would one need a donate button when the "donation" mechanism is already in place ....

Unfortunately That doesn't seem to be the way things are thought out.
if 5000 scimtars are bought, they think... Oh we need more ships pronto
if 100,000 keys are sold, oh we need more lock boxes and gimics to go in them
if we subscribe or buy lifetime... oh we need more benefits for these people
And so far the Freemium Idea has been unsuccessful in addressing alot of issues in game because of cost to effectiveness for profitability margins.
Instead if becomes a question of...what will they put up with? if its Not going to get a significant enough amount of players to quit, then its not worth fixing.
Or, we'd really like to solve this issue, but unfortunately Building more ships/weapons/etc yields a high income for our shareholders then fixing the UI that causes you to have HUGE performance crashes.

somehow i don’t believe that cryptic would allow players to dictate what is worked on by paying money into a specific cause, neither can i see many players paying money in when there are too many causes that each individual player would like to see changed.
one player might want a certain uniform that is not yet in the game, another player might want a certain bridge layout, another might want living quarters like a flat or house they can customise with furniture, another player might want a combat or non-combat pet that is not yet in the game, another might want a playable species or even a complete new faction.
plus there are variations in each desire for example as with the factions one player might want a borg faction and another might want cardasian and another might want a Dominion faction.
there are a million and one things players would like added or worked on, setting up a donation system would be a logistical nightmare.
if you want to support the game in general then buy a lifetime sub or maybe the delta rising ship pack or even just buy some zen, in the long run by doing so you may eventually get what you want as the more people that buy a sub or in game item ect the more people cryptic can hire to work on features and bugs in the game and maybe even bigger servers can be purchased so the game can grow and change without the need to remove old content.
paying money towards a specific cause is just unworkable and i don’t believe that cryptic would ever consider such a system of raising funds.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
It's an altruistic idea but I I feel you good intentions are misplaced. I believe in the idea of crowdfunding but not in the case of companies with sufficient capital/revenue streams to make improvements to their products of their own accord.

Well thanks for someone atleast understanding my intention.
At anyrate, its just frustrating how bugged out the game is, how a top of the line computer will get 12 fps if they have a UI window open.
Or how if you have load outs in my case and it for some reason after patch tries to merge the old deleted load outs and the current ones, and then DELETES the items saying *invalid configuration* ( in which case if your wondering ;if this ever happens to you, they will pretty much say they have no power to correct the issue, you will never get your items back, and you need to go file a bug report)
etc
I just don't see how to circumvent the infrastructure that is preventing Major bug fixes from occurring. But from the general attitude of the forum, I'm gathering they are here to stay, and to try to think of *something* is heresy lol

I read that as "You won't fix bugs with the money you get now, so maybe throwing money at you for nothing will get you to do it."
If memory serves an MMO - I forget which one did try something like this. They launched a Kickstarter project for aspects they otherwise couldn't/wouldn't fund. No idea how it turned out though.
The problem with doing that though, is that it suggests that a game isn't doing well financially, which can frighten people off.
I don't think Cryptic lacks money or resources to work on STO. I don't see how giving them more money would help.
But if they do indeed lack money, or resources, I can't seriously believe, as a developer myself, that this is the reason of all the bad design decisions made over the past few Seasons.
Cryptic just needs better direction. Sometimes the answer doesn't lie in resource count. "Less is more." This tends to be true more often than not.
I read that as "You won't fix bugs with the money you get now, so maybe throwing money at you for nothing will get you to do it."
That is pretty much where its at. The worst part, if they did put a donate to fix bugs button in and if they find it successful and create more bugs to just to make more money. Its best never to travel down that road.
If you don't want to buy new ships or gamble, let them know, and let them know what you want to do, but to keep on supporting something the wrong way just makes things keep going sour.
Hey folks - Instead of bashing the OP, how about taking the INTENT (namely, fixing bugs) and figuring out another recommendation/solution?
I posted this on reddit, figured it makes sense to cross-post here.
The PWI/PWE business is not set up for crowdsourcing/fundraising.
I proposed an idea at one time about Cryptic sponsoring a virtual STO convention. Among numerous activities -- and prior to the event -- registered attendees (confirmed STO players) could rank/vote on a pre-selected series of bugs which Devs would fix.
During the last part of the event, there would be a hackathon: Cryptic devs would do their best to fix the highest-voted bugs. Every 90 minutes or so, one of the Devs would provide a quick status report. (I can't say how long the hackathon would go... That depended on how much time the Devs wanted to give to the event. plus how many bugs they have resources/time/expertise to squash.)
Bug patches would be pushed to Tribble (or Redshirt) for testing. Production releases onto Holodeck would be delayed for a week, to make sure any additional QA could be conducted, or additional fixes/tweaks by the Devs.
This would give Cryptic a much-needed public relations boost in the eyes of their customers. I'd suggest this for various other Cryptic MMO products, too.
So, forget the donations, fundraising, or crowdsourcing. Instead, Cryptic should host a live event where players can vote on what (pre-determined) bug squashing takes place. Cryptic endeavors to fix the bugs. Cryptic rolls the fixes into testing, then eventual production.
I've suggested varying ways of monetizing bug fixing, balance and polish in the past but the vast majority on this forum really don't want to hear it.
The truth, as has been pointed out already, is that capitalism is 'supposed' to mirror democracy
In theory, when we expend money on something we are casting a vote to sustain or improve that thing. And in theory our voting power is proportional to our production power, the more we contribute to society the more money we earn, and thus the more votes we can cast.
Now weather you agree that this system works or not (I don't) it is the system that we have and not one of us has enough votes to change it. So our best option is to work with what we have.
Right now STO allows us to vote for power creep and aesthetics by purchasing things in the C-Store and it allows us to support it, without actually voting any particular way, by subscribing.
However there is nothing we can buy in the C-Store that allows us to vote for balance, bug fixing, engine improvements or polish.
It is important to note that not making a purchase is not a vote against the current system, it simply places you in the non-target demographic. For the most part businesses target their products and services at people who spend money, not people who don't.
If we want polish balance or bug fixes we need a way to incentivize cryptic to work on these things, because history has show us that they do not do so without incentive and we have no way of providing it to them currently.

Make it a yearly or twice-a-year event.
THAT could be a reasonable workaround.
My suggestion would be for Cryptic to fix their bugs, plain and simple. And testing their stuff before throwing it on the live server. But that is a given, not something to beg for, and certainly nothing to donate for.
The OP's idea is already on the top ten list of most insane ideas ever, as it's not the first time someone suggested such a ridiculous thing. Cryptic is a company that makes video games for money, they are not Unicef.
We already fund the game..
We already pay their salaries.
Now you're asking people to pay for bug fixes all over again..
Bad idea. And would make pwe even more greedy, and stingy with the money in game they earn.
Now if you had a private owner, things may be different here. I always thought, that all the star trek actors should buyout the game.
Monetize it how they and cbs want to afterwords.
Couldn't be any worse then what it is now.
