Revive dead Romulan Missions?

isthisscienceisthisscience Member Posts: 863 Arc User
  • “Under the Cover of Night”
  • “Minefield”
  • “Divide et Impera”
  • “Saturday’s Child”
  • “Preemptive Strike”
  • “Hunting the Hunters”
  • “Project Nightingale”
  • “Ground Zero”
  • “Ghost Ship”
  • “Friend of My Enemy”
  • “Trapped”

All to be removed completely, already gone from Tribble. Sounds like a new foundry challenge. Take your favorite and recreate it in the foundry (only better of course). Would be fun to see if people can make a Divide et Impera that people enjoy.

They're removing all the Romulan Mystery missions? I would imagine they are just going.to revamp them, not remove them.

It is kind of excititing to think of what they can do with them now that they aren't rushed by a deadline.like they were at launch.

(Also check.out Divide ut Regnes in the Spotlight section for the Divide et Impera fix :) )

They're merging and revamping "Ground Zero" and "Taris" and adding a couple more, but the rest are being removed completely.

the real question is "how many will I miss?" If they have junk rewards and a story that sucks? nah.

this will require careful contemplation later.

At this point I can't even remember the name of that one mission they removed from the Klingon arc.

However, the issue will be, what about those Foundry missions that are direct sequels to missions being removed. Specifically i think there's a spotlight that follows Divide Et Impera. An author or two might want to recreate those missions so their own still work.

It would be a cool community challenge to call on Founders to remake and modernize those missions.

My thoughts right now are to have "Divide ut Regnes" removed from the Spotlight list once the new patch goes live removing the official Romulan missions. The storyline is just too intertwined with Divide et Impera, Saturday's Child, and Preemptive Strike to make much sense in its current form if it stayed on the list.

Removing it from the list gives me the freedom to modify it into a "you messed with the timeline...see what happened" mission that still has some relevance and can be used as a sort of touchstone to the removed missions. ;)

I don't think that is very fair, and most of us have played it before its removal. There is precedent even in Cryptic missions for things not making sense after removed content, even Step Between Stars doesn't make sense for someone who started their character after that episode came out.

It would be a cool relic of missions us future-old timers will get and hopefully someone will recreate it in the foundry for new timers.

I'm not removing the mission entirely from the Foundry, I plan to keep a copy of it in its current form. I just don't think it deserves a place on the Spotlight list after the material it was written for is no longer in the game.

Again, after looking over what and how the new Romulan Mystery content is presented, I am thinking of releasing a modified 'Divide ut Regnes' as a touchstone to the removed missions, based on the timeline being changed... because instead of preserving the timeline as you did in the original, somehow you have changed it now - hence the new Rom missions/storyline. :D

I've been collecting data by playing the mission and making a lot of screenshots. I've finished Saturday's child and am ready to start Preemptive strike.

Ok, I managed to finish up to friend of my enemy before the server went down for maintenance.

I forgot how cool some of the base maps are. Some of them we can't properly duplicate.... oh well, I made pictures.

    “Divide et Impera”
    “Saturday’s Child”
    “Preemptive Strike”
    “Hunting the Hunters”
    “Project Nightingale”
    - By Any Means (I did a record of this even though it's still here in some manner)
    “Ground Zero”
    “Ghost Ship”
    “Friend of My Enemy”

So yeah, I managed to get all of the things that were dropped completely.

Don't forget, there's always Let's Plays on YouTube. That's what I've been using as a guide for my novelization of "The Other Side" up in Ten Forward.

well, each of my recordings is a series of several dozen screenshots. One of the missions is in the 90s... I screenshotted (almost) every dialog box, and anything I thought was needed for the maps.

MHM, you do know that Captain Smirk did a detailed video 'walkthrough' of each of the removed missions, including reading every dialog box, in his 'Lunchtime Livestreams' the past two weeks, right?

Just thought I might save you some effort, if you haven't. :) They're a great source for mission material/content.

Uh, you know I'm talking about a series of pictures I made last week right? :P

“Under the Cover of Night” - 45
    “Minefield” - 47
    “Divide et Impera” - 53
    “Saturday’s Child” - 54
    “Preemptive Strike” - 49
    “Hunting the Hunters” - 67
    “Project Nightingale” - 73
    - By Any Means - 57
“Ground Zero” - 47 (I missed a dialog or two due to it popping up while I was trying to loot, it was a minor dialog I think.)
    “Ghost Ship” - 61
“Friend of My Enemy” - 97

    for a total of 601 screencaps. :P

I thought about using Demorecord, but I didn't know if it would catch the dialog, and I didn't know if it would even WORK after the patch. And I don't have my system setup for video, so I went with what I knew.

There's no reason to completely stick to the original storyline of some of these missions.

Personally I would love to recreate Ghost Ship because I like the premise, but actually play around with it and make the story more interesting. Fighting Devidians, Hirogen and Romulans in one mission (with the latter two serving as nothing more than kill objectives) just wasn't a whole lot of fun. Especially since it took place after the spectures series and you could tell from the start that the whole thing was about the Devidians. I think I can do better than that.

So I'm just going to throw this out. Do you guys think rewriting one of the old Romulan one-off missions would make a good challenge? Mission still has to follow the premise of the original, but everything in-between is fair game. Treat it like if Cryptic was revamping the mission, except it's players doing it.

Some of them had aspects of the story that are very cool.

Others bored me. Minefield is the worst there....

There's also the livestreams on twitch to get anything else. Good timing they did that, records it all just as we lose them. Plus, I bet there are loads of Let's Play on youtube.

Hi there. So, I have written a story outline based on DIVIDE ET IMPERA and also a map plan.
When we get the foundry back I shall try to throw that together.

It will be based on the original, following the basic outline. Same chapter titles, but hopefully a slightly easier to swallow story. The main difference is the introduction of 1 new character.

Thanks for the inspiration, isthisscience. People have talked about remaking the mission for months and it never interested me until this post for some reason.

so, it occurs to me that the set of images I recorded, since I used a dual monitor setup, might be best if they were cropped to chop off the extra monitor. it makes the files around half the size. but it's time consuming. the cropped version are over 1 Mb each.

Off topic - Has anyone redone War is Good To Business?

I'd might dabble with that and combine it with the patrol in the Celes System as well.
