You don’t need to return to Earth to sell the stuff in your Inventory; you receive more or less the price for right clicking on it and selecting 'discard'. Edit: The space and ground equipment vendors at Earth Spacedock (ESD), (and First City and New Romulus Command) are among a few places where you can receive 50 per cent of the price when selling items, rather than the 40 per cent from your Inventory; however soon you might find that just selling it from the inventory is easier than lugging equipment around the universe... -credit to westmetals.
AFAIK, Discarding an item and recycling it are not the same - you only get EC for recycling.

Some items can't be recycled or sold, but can be discarded (Tribbles for example).
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.

Well my first recomendation at 40 is the excellent Advanced Heavy Cruiser Retrofit (Excelsior) but that a C-Store one for 2000 Zen very good BOFF and console layout and beautiful classic looks

If you do like Cruisers, but can't get the Excelsior Retrofit one then the Assault Cruiser is decent. Same console layout as the Excelsior Retrofit, but its BOFF layout is slighty different.

If you perfer Science Vessels I feel the Reconnaissance Science Vessel is a solid choice with its BOFF and console layout

And if you like Escorts, the Patrol Escort is rather decent and survivable for an escort.

one thing need to be added to the advice section, never ever do the relocate colonist to the borders.
If one is going to do the settle chain quest on the nova places, you always run out faster then you get more.
I think you get less recive colonist missions nowadays, from a comment some where there where more or more frequent before some update a while ago.

The resettle colonist Doff mission is fine as it is. One just needs to do two of the mission where one acquires colonists first. Good Dil payout on the resettle colonist mission makes it a worthwhile to repeat as often as possible.

Congrats on making Lvl 40! Enjoy it. This would be an excellent time to go back and pick up any of the PvE storyline missions you skipped or did not complete. Your ship and crew will be strong enough to complete them handily and some of them award some very nice items. Such as the Hybrid Plasma Disruptors Mk XI . Used these on my Fed ships for a very long time before I swapped them out.

I rather do two alrertts then wait and wait and wait and HOPE one gets the quest to refill your colonist so you can continue the quest chains.
I see 500 dil as NOTHING.
Waiting is not something I enjoy in any game.
This game ok there are allot of other stuff and assignments to do in the meantime, but not having enough colonists makes me afraid to do some of em, because i could after all get more colonists, or i might have just enough to do one quest in the chain some where whith my current doffs.
    Thats just my thoghts.
For you 500 dil is more usefull so you are willing to wait.
Or you know where and when you get more and so are not a big deal.
OR you have already fone the chains so you have no need for such number of colonists.
I am new at this game, I have no idea, but that is my feeling on the matter.
My feeling that the colonists are few enough as is, may be wrong.
    That is ok.

I just wanted to put in my 2 ccent on something i had noticed.
Heck i have no idea if the quest chains rewards are good enough.
Some say they "print" purple doffs.
I imagin it is from the refugees you get that you can trade up.
But again something i do not know is right or wrong, as i have yet compleat one chain.
In other news, i think i got 4 levels yesterday, so now i am level 44.(edit, i was wron, i am 45 when i logged in today)
And that is from not even doing much. :-/

Mirror Universe ships are good alternatives to the free ship you get at level 40, but they do cost a little bit of EC depending on the ship and the number of them listed on the Exchange under Reward Packs.

For my Engineering toon I purchased the Heavy Cruiser Retrofit since I wanted something different from the T5 Sovereign class cruiser and it has a Lt Cmdr science Boff station which allows me to use gravity well. When I purchased it average selling price was around 800k - 900k. Now the are in the low 300's EC. I think I put one up for sale on the Exchange for 350k EC, not sure if it sold yet.

When my Science toon reached level 40 summer of last year, I did not even bother selecting my free T5 ship. I went straight to the Exchange and purchased the Science Vessel Retrofit for around 120k EC. I recently put one up for sale for around 150k EC, but again I am not sure if it sold yet.

Both ships were used to play normal content at level 60 so it is possible to play STO without a T6 ship. But it will naturally be more challenging. I switched over to T6 ships last month.

furofthewolf, if you do not have much EC to purchase a Mirror ship and if the ship I put up on the Exchange has not been sold yet when I log back into STO tonight, then I can offer you one of those ships. Just provide your handle so that I can mail it to you.

Regarding purple Doffs... Once the colony chain missions are done (7 in all), there is a chance you will see "Support Colonization Efforts" the next time you visit the cluster. You will only get a purple Doff with a critical success... and it can be hit or miss. My worst luck was with the B'Tran cluster to get a Purple Technician. Despite using other purple doffs to have a 28% - 32% chance of critical success it took about 40 attempts or more than 3 months before I got my 1st purple tech. After that it was a lot better; after about another 2 months I managed to get have a total of 6 purple techs and I stopped doing that mission for my Engineering toon.

It is possible to use a refugee to do the Asylum / Sanctuary recruitment missions, but the chances of getting a purple Doff is well... very rare.

    Greetings folks!
It has been quite a while since I've fiddled around with STO, and I believe my last going off the KDF faction was JUST introduced and had barely anything for story. Beginning my return to STO story, I logged back in to my level 34ish fed human engineer, and I don't quite recall doing this but I apparently made him look like a young space age version of the monopoly guy.

When I got in game it seems my was invaded by some white quality duty officer chaps, and I was getting messages and notifications all over the place about wizzlefop getting a razafrats and other such things that made no sense. After apparently using research to make some form of white quality doodad, I give up on figuring the rest of that stuff out and go do my usual mmo thing of checking out what I have in my bank after wandering around like a numpty to find it. I have no bloody clue what I was doing the last time I played, but I've always been quite a packrat, so when I get into my bank I find it 3/4s full of what I believe were crafting materials, as well as some cardassian lockboxes (or something like that). I then state to myself that yep, those are indeed some things, close the screen and back away slowly.

After that I figure it might be wise to have a gander at my ships to make sure everything is in order, and that no young rapscallions had taken of with my warp nacelles and left the ships sitting on concrete blocks. Starfleet must have fantastic security on their long term storage, as they're all there just as I left them. I have a gander at my equipment on my ship, because hey after not playing in such a good while my equipment could be considered legacy, or converted to an ice cream machine or something. Everything still looks to be in place, I still have weapons to do shootey things, and torpedo launchers to launch explodey energy sausages at people. I then state to myself that yep, those are indeed some things, close the screen and back away slowly.

After all that noodle scratching I figure hey, maybe I need a refresher course from the academy? I swap out and go and make a new character so I can run the tutorial again. I thought I had instructed her to be a sciencey type person, but apparently she's a sassy lassy and decided to go with tactical instead. I twiddle my way through the first bit of the tutorial and the rust slowly starts loosening up on the STO portion of my brain. I get to the place in the story where I start getting my own little crew of bridge officers together, and notice that hey, that first lass that signed on with me is purple quality, and the rest of these goofballs are blue quality. This gives me one of those little "waitaminute" moments, and I quickly pop back over to my old character I was leveling many moons ago and peek at his compatriots. It looks like I kept around the same group of folks that I had at the academy, but the old academy must have had a much tighter budget! The Flores hanging around with my first character is only of blue quality, I have one green quality chap, and 3 other white quality ones as well. One of them does have the appearance of some sort of evil space wizard (techy monocle and everything), so I'll have to keep an eye on that one.

I'll be diving back into the tutorial on my new lass this evening, but have a few questions for you folks that actually know what's going on.

    TL;DR here's my actual questions! ;)

Those ancient crafting materials in my bank, are they useful for anything anymore? or did I just find my ship's new toilet paper supply?

After I get my head wrapped around the game again with my new character, will it be worthwhile to use my 'legacy' engineer character at all? Engineer really is the class that interests me most, but with how things have been changed and tweaked and added I'm a wee bit worried that my engineer character might be gimped from missing out on things while leveling in ye olden days of yore when some of these things that confuse me didn't exist in the game. Plus I have no bloody clue how to equip the poor guy, but I'm hoping progress with my new character will remedy that. So should my monopoly guy be mothballed? or will he be worth revisiting down the road?

The bridge officers that are with my engineer, being that he's level 34 and they're (to me it seems,) comparatively garbage to the ones you get even from the tutorial, is that something that will have effectively crippled my character? or can a trip to the shops get him a crew that's of a higher quality and have things humming along nicely?

is there a good idiot's guide to how the new R&D system, and duty officer systems work? or does that get covered nicely in the tutorial that I'm re-doing?

This game seems to have gotten a crazy amount of varying currency types, is there a rundown on what they are and what each does? I see that on the STO homepage that there's a lobi sale going on. What in the name of Q's dancing crocodile strippers is a lobi? am I going to have to murder homeless ferengi and harvest their earlobes?

Are there any fleets/chat channels/taco stands/hallucinations that are friendly to STO nincompoops that ask the most basic of questions about the game?

Well I think that's enough for now, hopefully someone will read my essay. :D

    the "crocodile strippers" are Fek'lhri.

There's only really a few currencies. EC, Dilithium, Zen, Lobi, Latinum, Fleet marks, and Reputation marks of several flavors.

EC is used when players trade between each other and sometimes to buy stuff from vendors. Zen is for the in game store. Dilithium is for buying stuff from NPCs or trading on the Dilithium exchange for Zen. Lobi have a special store run by Ferengi that has stuff in it you can't get other ways. Fleet Marks are for fleet projects, Rep marks are for rep projects.

No. They have no use in the updated crafting system. However, you can convert them into mats for the new crafting system. 1st you must have them in your personal inventor to begin the process, 2nd right click the old mats and there should be an option to convert the old mats to new mats. The new mats will go into the R&D tab of your personal inventory so that they do not actually use up any precious bank or personal inventory slots.

    You should be fine.

You can always buy Purple Bridge Officers from the Exchange if you have enough EC. Additionally, you can also recruit Boffs through the Duty Officer (Doff) system. However, I believe those missions will only appear once you reach tier 4 of the various commendations. The quality of the Boff through the recruiting mission is random.

is there a good idiot's guide to how the new R&D system, and duty officer systems work? or does that get covered nicely in the tutorial that I'm re-doing?

Basically there are 7 schools in the crafting system. The best way to level them up is to do the daily mission in each school that rewards 6,000 XP for that specific school; a critical success will reward an extra 1,000 XP. Initially you can only do one crafting project, but as you gain levels more will open up. There are a total of 5 available slots once they are all unlocked. You can also gain a small amount of XP by crafting some stuff.

You will need Duty Officers to do any crafting. You will get your 1st set of Duty Officers when you reach level 11. They mostly be common (white) officers, but you may get a few uncommon (green) or perhaps rare (blue) officers. The crafting system becomes available when you reach level 15. At that point you will get a set of holographic duty officers that you can use for Doff missions or the crafting system.

It is always a good idea to replace lower quality Doffs with higher quality Doffs because they increase your chances of getting critical success. Doffs can either be purchased from the Exchange or be recruited. The academy have individuals that will allow you to recruit Doffs once you have reached level 11. You just need to do a little bit of exploring to find them. There is a circular building in the north west part of the map / campus with a woman behind a booth that will allow you to recruit some Doffs by general specializations (Tactical, Operations, Science, Civilian). Outside that build will be a female Tellarite and female Andorian arguing; you can recruit a race specific Doff (random specialization) from them. There is a female Vulcan standing in the campus that will allow you to recruit Vulcan Doffs.

There are various "Asylum / Sanctuary" mission that appears from time to time which allows you to recruit a Doff as long as you are willing to give a refugee (civilian) in return. The easiest way to get a refugee is from the Exchange. There are also "Instigate Defection" to get a Doff from the Klingon faction.

Yeah, there are a lot of them. But for someone who is basically new to the game there are three that are important

    1. Zen - This is the highest level or premium type of currency. It can be bought with real money ($1 USD = 100 Zen) or it can be obtained by exchanging refined dilithium crystal (from dilithium ore) in return for Zen. The exchange rate fluctuates because it depend on how much refined dilithium other players want in exchange for the Zen that they have. C-Store items can only be purchased with Zen.

    2. Refined Dilithium Crystals (or simply Dilithium) - Refined Dilithium is obtained by refining dilithium ore players can obtain in the game. Basically you can only refine 8k dilithium per day per toon; however, if are in a fleet with a dilithium mine and a veteran (subscribed for 1,000 day or purchased a Life Time Subscription) it can be increased to about 9k per day.

There are several ways to obtain dilithium ore such as the Doff missions which offers small amounts when they are successful; 5 - 50 dilithium ore depending on the mission. Critical success increases the amount; say instead of 5 you get 125. There is a daily Asteroid Mining mission which I think becomes available at level 11 which can reward up to 1,000 dilithium ore depending on how well you score in the mini-game. There is also a daily mid-term trivia test at Star Fleet Academy in the above mention circular building that rewards 480 dilithium if you answer correctly and is available when you reach level 11. Here is a cheat sheet:

    http://stosite.com/the-path-to-2409-answers/

    3. Energy Credits (EC) - This is the most common currency in the game. People can make (or loose) EC by buying items at low prices and selling them at higher on the Exchange. I have made a pretty decent amount of EC doing this. It is not for everyone and there is always a risk what item you bought may not sell or only sell below the price you bought it at.

Those are the most important for "newbies", but there are also Lobi Crystals, Gold Pressed Latinum and Marks.

Lobi Crystals - These comes from opening lockboxes. Lockboxes can offer a very small chance of winning a specific ship depending on the type of lockbox (about 0.5%), but you need to purchase a Master Key (300 Zen from the C-Store or roughly 2.1 million EC from the Exchange) to open them. Each lockbox will give you 5 - 20 (pretty rare) Lobi Crystals and "something" that is nowhere near the value of a Lockbox Starship. Note Mirror Universe starships are not "Lockbox Starships" and are only worth a few hundred thousand EC to a couple of million EC on the Exchange. True "Lockbox Starships" sell for at least 60 million EC all the way up to 500 million EC.

Lobi Crystals can be used to purchase ships or other gear from the Lobi Store. They are also bound to your account; to cannot sell them or trade them to other players

Gold Press Latinum (GPL) - This is kinda like a gag currency. You can buy disc balls to make people dance or holographic emitters to make your ship look like a different ship for a short period of time, but otherwise nothing different.

Marks - Marks are end game currency which you can start earning when you are level 44 by playing queued missions. Marks are used in the end game reputation system (like Omega, New Romulus, Delta Alliance) which allows you to eventually purchase gear from the rep system you are working on. Marks are specific to a rep system which means you cannot use Omega Marks in the Counter Command reputation system.

I am sure there are other currencies in the game that I have not mentioned.

    how you trade ships?

It is not really trading ships. It basically me sending you an item via the in game mail system and you need to go to a mail terminal to retrieve the item.

All you need to do is provide me with your player handle in STO which should basically be the username of the email address that is associated with your STO account. For example, if the email address you used to create your STO account is furofthewolf@ultimatemail.com, then your handle would be @furofthewolf.

Also, let me know if you prefer the Heavy Cruiser Refit or the Science Vessel Retrofit. If the ship you want has been purchased, then I can send you the other ship for you to play around with. If both ships have been purchased then... sorry.

These are simply T5 starships. While you can use them to play normal missions at level 60, it will be challenging because once you past level 50 the hit points and damage caused by enemy starships start to go up. There is kind of a big difference between level 59 and level 60.

Lockboxes are basically a form of gambling or lottery. You purchase a Master Key for a very small chance to "win the grand prize". Most of the time whatever poops out of the box is worth a lot less than the key your purchased and probably not worth much more than real life TRIBBLE.

There have been people who ranted that they have opened 200 - 500 lockboxes and never got "the grand prize". Open lockboxes for fun and for the Lobi Crystals if you want them. Do not allow yourself to become addicted to opening lockboxes.

Not a problem there, if anything I think I'd be more inclined to sell the Master Keys on the exchange. ;)

    the beginning your character

First question you must answer for yourself what do you want from the game and what do you find most trekkie to you about star trek

If you want a all around role play ground and space space character pick the one whom you like the looks of the best , Aliens give you the most options to change the looks of your character to whatever you want it to look like

If role play and ground isn't on your list and starship combat is the best choice is the paklet which comes with 6% crit chance and at end game will be the most powerful space character you can make , with 2 romulan SROs from the embassy he /she will be about as good a space character the Feds can make giving you a 10% crit chance verses a romulan with 5 SRO's a 11.5% crit chance

For space combat the Tac character profession cant be beat . A Tac does better in a science ship and a engineering ship over science officers and engineers. naturally they do very well in Tactical ships with the highest damage in the game

The engineer and science officers meet the Tac on the ground with equality and even surpass the Tac in cases

Find a good friendly fleet as fast as possible with voice communication so they can give you more tips to the game

If they don't seem helpful or friendly move on to another

Good luck and see you in game
    Jellico....Engineer ground.....Da'val Romulan space Sci
Saphire.. Science ground......Ko'el Romulan space Tac
    Leva........Tactical ground.....Koj Romulan space Eng

JJ-Verse will never be Canon or considered Lore...It will always be JJ-Verse

Thank you! Doing something really nice for another player is most commendable. Hopefully, others will see the example you have set and try it out for themselves. Why? Because doing something nice for another player is one of the few fun things left in this game which the Dev Team cannot swing the nerfbat on or monetize.

OK.. I was in Closed Beta, and even paid for the founders package. I since left a LONG (2-3 years) time ago and after 3 days with customer service YEA !! I have my account back..

Sort of.. I have my characters NAMES.. thats it..!

My character design, ships, experience, etc.. etc.. etc.. etc.. etc.. etc.. ALL GONE

To that I say WTF.. really..? >.<

Is there a way to get any of it back or am I the oldest noob in the game..?

I see I have all my accolades still but none of the rank or other stuff.. Seems even have maybe my last ship.. but I would think I am too low of rank to pilot it.. I guess will find out. Waiting on game to finish downloading.

So what DO you have? It sounds like your characters are now level 1... but it's hard to visualize you literally not having ANYTHING at all...

    oUCH!

I have heard the zen gold buildup is such a plesurble surprice to returning players, to have lost all that possible zen you might have had after all this time. >_<
In other news, i got to level 50 today. :D

Nope. Never played MWO. No interest in it. Have every other BattleTech based computer game ever made. I've also spent about US $2,500 on the tabletop game over the years.

If you came in here only to express a negative opinion about MWO, that's fine.

But please don't use me for your poster child. Little too passive aggressive for my tastes. Since everyone else does it as well, I find the whole thing really boring. If you are going to be a snowflake, you really should try harder to not look and act like everyone else. Makes you a cheap knock off instead of an original. No one wants that, do they?
