Game Crippling Lag - cogent-ic-151338-nyk-b5.c.telia.ne

For the past day or so I've been having game crippling lag and frequent disconnects, (every 1-5 mins). I ran a path ping test, here are the results:

Trace complete.

The result, as far as I can understand them, indicate that there's nothing wrong with my ISP or with the Cryptic servers, rather it's an issue with Cogent Communications.

Since this isn't my provider's problem, (as far as I can tell anyway), and I somehow doubt harassing Cogent is high on Cryptic's to do list, is there anything I can do myself to get around this? Maybe set up a vpn on some machine on the west coast to bypass the broken one(s) in the east?

For a reliable Internet connection to a service, you should be having ZERO packet loss on your connection... You have a 2% loss on your First Hop, which is bad enough by itself to cause the symptoms you are describing... The latency is also higher then it should be, as the expected value should be around 20 ms or less for the first hop...

There are other packet loss further down your connection, but these are unreliable, due to having packet loss on your first connection into the Internet, which compounds the further away you go...

Try rebooting/power cycling your router and see if this improves the condition. If it doesn't then you should contact your ISP and have them send someone out to take a look at the unit...

Thanks - that's why I needed a second opinion. I'll have a closer look at my router.

Router updates provided from your ISP can often be an issue. I've experienced that 2x in the past 2 years... annual updates and such.

Cogent however remains a thorn in the side of STO and Cryptic players in general. They have been known to occasionally throttle the connection.

And while I wait to participate in the conversation, I review my post to ensure it meets with the Cryptic TOS (check) and give sober thought as to it's content. Is it of value to the community (sure), does it help someone (I think so), and more importantly does it reinforce the common values shared by Cryptic and it's community? (Nah, don't buy there stuffs. Play FREE until it bleeds).
