Okay, first off, let me say I LOVE the new stuff, that first mission where you go inside tuvok's mind was the single coolest mission yet, but there have just been some moments (Like when you go to the ocompan freighter, I think it's called), where when you go to the sector, your computer goes into lag-overdrive. I mean, I'm surprised I didn't go crazy and start hallucinating exclamation points popping out of my arms and legs, then start saying "We're lag-inators! And soon everyone else will be too, starting with you, varoid!"
I mean, and I'm not sure how long this space battle lasted, time seems to go by at a different speed when you're blowing stuff up, but it was 5, 10, 15 minutes. The reason was because I couldn't get my cannons on the enemies, and half the time all I could even hit them with were my turrets (They can fire 360 degrees), between the stop motion, and the ship doing something 2 or 3 seconds after I pressed the control (And then doing it for a pretty good time after I stopped pressing it, since I wasn't even sure if it responded and therefore pressed it longer), the cannons just went straight past the enemy.
Anyway, I tried asking about this in zone chat, but half the time everyone just ignored me, and the rest no one had any good ideas, but why don't you just add an option in not to show the backgrounds? I mean, I'm pretty sure that's what's lagging it up anyway. Or maybe to replace the nebula backgrounds with an easy, classic, stars background (That has the stars pretty far apart)
I'm just glad I didn't use my old computer with half the RAM, if I had used that, I probably could of used it has a construction tool for building a new house. (Get that mission going on it, throw the computer at a wall I wanna knock down, and BOOM, lol)
Do you have the download on demand feature enabled? That would explain a lot of your lag if you're trying to play the game by moving into new areas that you haven't downloaded yet. Have you tried turning down your graphics settings?

Why do the stars need to be far apart? Have you only looked at a night sky while you're in a city? Try getting out into the wilderness, the entire sky is a sea of stars, I'd say the game doesn't have enough stars in the backgrounds to match reality.
You need to determine if the lag is being caused by Network connection quality issues, or by Graphic Card bottlenecks...
Graphic Card performance is easy to check. Just change to a much smaller screen resolution in the STO Client, then play the game and see if the performance is smoother... If it is, then you know its time to start playing with the Client graphics settings. If it isn't smoother, then its time to start running some Network Diagnostics, and post the results for other people to look at...

I've tried turning the graphics settings has low has they'll go, didn't make a big enough difference.
I also tried to do that thing with the patch on demand thing, I think that actually made it worse.
