So, what Starship Trait build are you going for?

breadandcircusesbreadandcircuses Member Posts: 2,355 Arc User
The thread's title pretty much says it all: looking over the potential and synergies, what Starship Trait setups will you make to go with what build style? The next two posts will be a list of the currently known Starship Traits, with links to their sources, followed by a few of my own thoughts on potential setups. After those, dive on in and add a few ideas of your own and let's see what we can come up with for different playstyles. :D

    Federation
    • Reciprocity (Starship Trait) - Phantom Intel Escort
After achieving level 5 in your Phantom Intel Escort’s Starship Mastery, you will unlock the Reciprocity starship trait. While this trait is slotted and an enemy misses you in combat, you have all of your Tactical and Intelligence bridge officer ability recharge times reduced slightly. This reduction can happen every few seconds, and it cannot reduce an ability's recharge time below its group cooldown.
[*]Battle Ready (Starship Trait) - Eclipse Intel Cruiser
After achieving level 5 in your Eclipse Intel Cruiser’s Starship Mastery, you will unlock the Battle Ready starship trait. While this trait is slotted, each time you use an Engineering or Intelligence bridge officer ability you gain a Defense and Damage Resistance Rating buff for a short time. This buff stacks up to 3 times.
[*]Emitter Synergy (Starship Trait) - Scryer Intel Science Vessel
After achieving level 5 in your Scryer Intel Science Vessel’s Starship Mastery, you will unlock the Emitter Synergy starship trait. While this trait is slotted, each time you use a Tactical or Intelligence bridge officer ability you gain a small bonus to both Exotic Damage and Shield Healing. This bonus stacks up to 3 times.
[*]Desperate Repairs (Starship Trait) - Guardian Cruiser
After achieving level 5 in your Guardian Cruiser’s Starship Mastery, you will unlock the Desperate Repairs starship trait. While this trait is slotted, each time your starship is critically hit you receive a Desperation counter. Immediately upon receiving a third Desperation counter you will receive a large hull and shield heal and will be unable to gain Desperation counters for a while.
[*]Radiant Nanite Cloud (Starship Trait) - Dauntless
After achieving level 5 in your Experimental Science Vessel’s Starship Mastery, you will unlock the Radiant Nanite Cloud starship trait. While this trait is slotted, all hull heal bridge officer abilities will heal for an additional 25% over 4 seconds in a 3 km radius.
[*]Ablative Field Projector (Starship Trait) - Pathfinder Long Range Science Vessel
After achieving level 5 in your Long Range Science Vessel [T6]’s Starship Mastery, you will unlock the Ablative Field Projector starship trait. While this trait is slotted, your shield healing bridge officer abilities provide a small amount of Temporary Hit Points on the target. This buff stacks up to 3 times.

                Klingon
                • Advanced Firing Solutions (Starship Trait) - Qib Intel Battlecruiser
After achieving level 5 in your Qib Intel Battlecruiser’s Starship Mastery, you will unlock the Advanced Firing Solutions starship trait. While this trait is slotted, each time a cannon weapon is fired your starship will gain a small amount of bonus turn rate and accuracy for a short time. This bonus stacks up to 10 times.
[*]Overwhelming Force (Starship Trait) - Mat'Ha Raptor
After reaching level 5 in your Mat’Ha Raptor’s Starship Mastery you will unlock the Overwhelming Force starship trait. While this trait is slotted your Beam Overload attacks will create a reduced radius Charged Particle Burst at the target's location. Your High Yield Torpedo attacks will create a reduced radius Photonic Shockwave at the target's location.

                    Romulan
                    • Tactical Retreat (Starship Trait) - Faeht Intel Warbird
After achieving level 5 in your Faeht Intel Warbird, you will unlock the Tactical Retreat starship trait. While this trait is slotted, gain a large defense and flight speed buff for a short time after being knocked below 25% hull strength. You also become untargetable for 2 seconds and have all enemy threat reduced to zero. Tactical Retreat can be triggered once every 60 seconds.
[*]Warp Shadow Decoy (Starship Trait) - Aelahl Warbird Battlecruiser
After reaching level 5 in your Aelahl Warbird Battlecruiser’s Starship Mastery you will unlock the Warp Shadow Decoy starship trait. While this trait is slotted cloaking will cause a Warp Shadow to appear near your location, causing enemy NPCs to attack your decoy instead of attacking you. This effect cannot trigger more often than once every thirty seconds.

                        Federation/Klingon/Romulan
                        • Improved Brace for Impact (Starship Trait) - Concorde, An’quat or Baratan Class Command ship

While this trait is slotted, activating a Tactical or Command Bridge Officer ability will reduce the recharge time of Science Bridge Officer and Captain abilities. This may only occur once every few seconds.

While this trait is slotted, activation of Engineering, Science, Tactical and Intelligence Team now load a Viral Torpedo. This causes your next Torpedo attack to disable your target(s) for a short period of time. This can occur once every 20 seconds.
[*]Partners in Arms (Starship Trait) - Hazari Destroyer
After achieving level 5 in your Hazari Destroyer, you will unlock the Partners in Arms starship trait. This special trait can be used on any starship that you own. While the Partners in Arms starship trait is active your ally targeted heals and buffs now provide you with a boost to all damage for a short time. This buff stacks up to 3 times.

                                  Vaaduar Lock Box
                                  • Frontal Assault (Starship Trait) - Vaadwaur Manasa Assault Escort

While this starship trait is slotted, activating Cannon abilities will provide a boost to your frontal shield hardness and regeneration rate for a short time.

After achieving level 5 in your Vaadwaur Astika Heavy Battlecruiser starship mastery, you will unlock the Supremacy starship trait.
While this starship trait is slotted, activating Beam: Fire At Will or Cannon: Scatter Volley will provide a small boost to all subsystem power levels per target hit for a short time as long as these attack modes are active.
This bonus stacks up to 20 times.

While slotted, using a hull heal ability will also heal your hangar pets within 5 km of your target for a portion of the healing dealt.

                                        Anniversary Event

While this trait is slotted, your hull and shield heal bridge officer abilities will have their recharge times reduced by 10% if you suffer damage while below 50% hull health. This can occur once every 4 seconds.

                                          C-Store Pack Promotions

While equipped, your Torpedo: High Yield bridge officer abilities will cause you to queue up a bonus Torpedo: High Yield I. This can occur once every 30 seconds.

                                            Intelligence Officer
                                            • Predictive Algorithms (Starship Trait) - 15 Specialization Points spent in Intelligence Officer
Anticipating the actions and movements of your foes has become second nature. Activating any Weapon Enhancement ability gives you crew a burst of focus, removing one negative effect from your vessel and improving your ability to hit enemies with your weapons for a short duration.

Weapon Enhancement Abilities include: Beam Overload, Beam Fire-at-Will, Cannon Scatter Volley, Cannon Rapid Fire, Torpedo High Yield, Torpedo Spread, Mine Dispersal Pattern Alpha, Mine Dispersal Pattern Beta, Surgical Strikes, Transport Warhead
Activating any Weapon Enhancement ability removes 1 Debuff effect and grants +2.5% Accuracy (stacks up to 4 times)
[*]Improved Predictive Algorithms (Starship Trait) - 30 Specialization Points spent in Intelligence Officer

Activating any Weapon Enhancement ability removes 1 Debuff effect and grants +5% Accuracy (stacks up to 4 times)

                                                Pilot
                                                • Pedal to the Metal (Starship Trait) - 15 Specialization Points spent in Pilot
Maintaining full throttle for an extended duration allows you to build up excess resonant energy that can be redirected into outgoing attacks as additional damage. This bonus only applies while you remain at Full Throttle, and takes several seconds to build up to its full potential.
+1% All Damage Bonus per 2 seconds spent at Full Throttle (max 10 stacks). All stacks immediately lost if your throttle is dropped.

                                                  Commando
                                                  • Demolition Teams (Starship Trait) - 15 Specialization Points spent in Commando
While within a short distance of your foe, you will periodically beam over commando squads trained in demolition, to plant charges aboard the enemy vessel. After sufficient charges have been placed, they will be detonated to deal shield-ignoring kinetic damage.

Demolition Charges that haven't yet been detonated can be removed using Tactical Team, or will also expire harmlessly after a short duration if the attacker does not remain within the short transporter range.
                                                      • Every 4 sec, applies a Demolition Team debuff to your primary target (or nearest foe) within a 2 km radius.

Once 5 debuffs applied, deals 5731.6 Kinetic Damage (100% Shield Penetration)

Additional Demolition Teams cannot be applied for 12 sec after a successful detonation

                                                      • Note: The damage listed was the amount provided by that captain's setup. As this will likely vary, I considered simply leaving a blank; however, I decided that a number to provide a frame of reference would be more useful even if it will likely vary up/down depending on what a given captain is built to do.

Some of my own suggestions to kick things off:

                                                    Federation
                                                    • Intelligent Design: Battle Ready, Emitter Synergy , (Improved) Predictive Algorithms, Reciprocity
Why: Slotting two copies of Emergency Power to Shields will allow you to trigger Battle Ready, boosting Defense and increasing your chance of being missed. That then helps Reciprocity reduce cooldowns on Tac/Intel powers, that then allows Improved Predictive Algorithms to grant added Accuracy and clear a debuff. At the same time, you gain Exotic Damage and Shield Healing from Emitter Synergy... that then buffs Emergency Power to Shields. Each produces bonuses for the next, well suited to almost any ship.
                                                        Also, it's a pun.
[*]Speed Tank - Battle Ready, (Improved) Predictive Algorithms, Pedal to the Metal, Reciprocity
Why: With Tac/Intel cooldown improvements every time you're missed, bonus Defense for using powers such as EP2E and A2D, and increased damage simply for maintaining full throttle, this build is going to be obnoxious... and probably all the more effective for it. Definitely a good place for Upgrade System improvements on Energy Signature Dampeners, and anything else that provides additional Defense. All that Defense will let you keep reducing the cooldowns on your Weapon Enhancement abilities, that will then add Accuracy and clear 1 debuff each. Wheeee!!!
[*]Lifeboat - Battle Ready, Emitter Synergy, Partners in Arms, Radiant Nanite Cloud
Why: Each time you toss out an Engi Team or Aux2SIF, your target and everyone nearby will get an additional minor Hull HoT, while you yourself gain Damage Resistance and Defense. At the same time, merely cycling Tac Team (and maybe some free Subsystem Targeting, if you're using a vessel) on yourself will keep buffing your Exotic Damage and Shield Healing for Feedback Pulse, Gravity Well, Science Team, and Transfer Shield Strength. On top of all that, Partners in Arms will further boost your offensive abilities each time you heal or buff an ally. This setup begs for a good Science vessel.

                                                          Klingon
                                                          • Mulling it over for now... there aren't many synergies to actually use in building something for the KDF, which makes them more of a piecemeal set of acquisitions rather than something to come up with a Starship Trait build for.

                                                          Romulan
                                                          • Tempting Faeht: (Improved) Predictive Algorithms, Pedal to the Metal, Tactical Retreat, either Load Viral Torpedo (for a bomber) or Warp Shadow Decoy
Why: The short answer... because this thing is almost as squishy as a KDF BoP, it should probably fly like one. Hit hard at high speed and get out the same way, something that Pedal to the Medal and Tactical Retreat combine to make much more successful. Plus... just imagine: Tactical Retreat triggers, you become untargetable for a moment, which you use to trigger GDF and your doffed Ramming Speed (healing might be a good idea too)... suddenly, the squishy little Warbird is punching through enemies in its way while making good its escape.
It sounds fun... and possibly effective. :P

None. The idea of buying a $30+ ship, plus the time to level it up, solely for the trait to use somewhere else, doesn't seem worth the investment to me. If I get them anyways from picking up a ship, cool (the one on the Mat'ha looks entertaining, in addition to the ship looking fun anyways), but not buying for a trait alone.

I did read up on them... I simply wished to make a single reference post that listed what they are and where they come from. I'll add them by faction and Captain Specialization as I go along, and probably update it later once we get the Holodeck versions next week. Why flip through a ton of separate pages when I can just make a combined list?

So in other words... eventually Predictive Algorithms, Improved Predictive Algorithms, Pedal to the Medal, and Demolition Teams, right? I'm almost there, but I'm transcribing descriptions from a review video of the Specializations on Tribble so it'll be a bit longer before I'm done typing out those four that do not stem from the T6 ships. Bear with me. :)

And of course, we have not idea what Starship Traits will be tied to an Episode or lockbox, if any, when Delta Rising hits... I'll add those next week once we see what they are.

Okay, the list of known Starship Traits in complete, including links to the Dev Blogs relating to each T6 ship that grants the Starship Trait since I found it to be a pain in the aft having to click through the whole set each time I wanted to find one. The Starship Traits from the Specializations have the full game description that I had available, but I'll double-check the live version next week and update with any changes.

So, if you can look at those Starship Traits and think of any builds that make good use of them, fire away! :D

Note how the Intel traits leave out target subsystems out on purpose.

                                                            Why?

They can't code to differentiate between the sci ships' innate ones and bridge officer off abilities, so they took the easy route and kept it out.

As someone who actually uses target subsystem X 3, which actually shares a CD with the other beam abilities, that was a bad decision. Might as well remove the shared CD and let us FAW tgt subsystems as they're not considered "enhancing abilities" like the others now.

None of them really blow my skirt up, the Warp Shadow Decoy I suppose could be useful defensively on my Rom characters but I don't think it's worth buying Aelahl just for that.

So I think it will be Predictive Algorithms across the board unless they release a T6 ship I want or some other future traits through lockbox or other ways are released.

I kinda like Demolition Teams but Commando looks like ground combat so I'll be avoiding it.

The traits are meh... the ship traits aren't so space shattering that people need to give up their T-5Us for.

For my science ship though I'll probably look at the Emitter Synergy. More exotic damage is always good.

For my cruiser petal to the medal works probably for a FAW build and most of the damage resist ones will probably be pulled.

klingon and Romulan traits are meh.

BTW, Reciprocity just seems as a speed tank's aux2bat. I hope that "every few seconds" is 10 secs at least, otherwise, it's just another BS mechanic waiting to be abused.

The Scryer, Dauntless, and Guardian traits are my favorites for my sci ship, but I'm not sure if I'll ever get them since I'd have to buy the pack for Zen on special.

Probably worse. Most Aux2Batt setups are there to try and get some offense out of a ship that otherwise lacks that characteristic... high-end DPSers and PvPers tend to simply run better ships that don't actually need it; that allows them to free up 3 doff slots, maintain decent healing, run Aux2SIF or Aux2ID, and make better use of the Tier 4 Nukara Rep Traits. I know your position is that Aux2Batt w/Technicians comes without any cost, and my own experience differs greatly in that respect, but I actually agree entirely as far as Reciprocity. It has absolutely no downside, but rather rewards you for not taking damage in the first place. Even better, if there is a gap between Reciprocity and your global cooldowns, you can probably close that with the Delta Rep console (7%), MACO 2-piece (5%), and the Xindi-Reptilian boff (5%).

Reciprocity makes me think the devs are secretly enamored with Aux2Batt builds, they just want to be able to heal themselves properly at the same time... on a Federation character of course. :P

The next two posts will be a list of the currently known Starship Traits, with their sources, followed by a few of my own thoughts on potential setups. After those, dive on in and add a few ideas of your own and let's see what we can come up with for different playstyles. :D

Thank you for this comprehensive list! :)

If anything, I'll be getting a Dauntless, or a Vaadwaur (sp?) lockbox ship, so I'll be using what goes with that.

I dont think you can use it somewhere else... the ship traits are tied to the ship. it's how well you mastered that particular ship.

Feds get 5 ships... so if you level up and max'd out the intel escort... and you switch to the guardian... you cant slot the escort skill cause your not in the intel escort anymore. And vice versa.

Indeed you can. Starship Traits are character unlocks, that go in one of 4 Starship Trait slots your captain has. Mastery Levels 1-4 are tied directly to that specific ship (not even ship class, that specific ship) so don't dismiss one you've leveled unless you don't plan on flying it again... you'd have to re-level it. Mastery Level 5 is also tied to that particular ship, but rather than granting any bonus to the ship, it unlocks a Starship Trait on the captain flying it.

The Starship Traits your character unlocks via either Mastery Level 5 on a T6 ship or via the Captain Specializations will remain available on any ship that captain flies, so long as they have them slotted. They may come from various sources, but they are unlocked on your captain rather than the ship. Theoretically, you could use your Starship Traits on a Miranda if you really felt like it, since they are part of the captain not the ship.

That's part of why tying Starship Trait unlocks to T6 ships screws the KDF and Rom players... they have less T6 ships, which means less Starship Trait options, which means less build options, which means... well, you get the idea. :P

On the plus side, the Mat'Ha's Starship Trait could be useful for making some interesting Science and pseudo-Science builds, though until we have more detailed info on how the Qib's Starship Trait works we have no idea whether that would be worthwhile or merely redundant to the Pilot Specialization. Both of the Romulan Starship Traits could be very nice indeed for getting out alive, especially combined with each other, but if I do go that route I will probably be singing "Bravest of the brave, Sir Romulan!" every time I do that... even if it does mean you can come back fully healed and ready to go.

So unless your accuracy really sucks to begin with, it's a real waste of a trait (unless they fix the bug).

Only T6 ship I plan to get currently is the Guardian, so it looks like it'll be Desperate Repairs and the three specialization traits.

I fully expect cross-faction ship traits to be a future lockbox staple, though.

So, Emitter Synergy, Tac Team, Subsystem Targeting, APO... and a nicely buffed Gravity Well benefitting from both the APO and Emitter Synergy? Or maybe Overwhelming Force, Gravity Well, then B:O and T:HY when they're nicely clumped together?

Sure, if it comes with a ship you fly its all good. But to play on another ship you may not like it, to unlock a trait?? Yeah... not many ppl will be bothered with that. It kinda sucks that even if you do own the ship, you dont have acces to it's special trait unless you lvl the ship. Thats bad design and it doesnt encouraging ppl to buy extra ships for their traits... if you actually have to unlock them by playing/lvling those ships...
Comparing this a bit with lock/box pair ships, its like having to play and unluck the use of a console from another ship that has a 2 pc set bonus with the ship's console you are curently flying:confused:. Its ridiculous.

If they do not offer a ton of 'basic' options free of charge and release the starship traits at the same pace as they have captain traits outside of lockboxes I will strongly dislike the entire concept. I also have a feeling they might tie the 'free' traits to rank 20 crafting which would be terrible.
