I've been around STO forever but I have not played a lot in the last few months. Primarily, I have stuck with doing the basics I have done and haven't dug into the new content.

The other day, I decided the best way to get a grasp of the "new stuff" would be to start a new character and go through the starting program.

But I'm still confused about kits/kit frames.

Where do I get frames? How do I use a kit on a Lt. level character? I have modules but no "Kit Frame" and haven't been able to figure out how it works. When I try to equip what the game gave me by default, it says I need a kit not a module... but I have no kit or frame?

I have searched STOwiki and all over the place but all I can assume is I must have clicked through something and missed it, or I missed picking up an item somewhere along the line.

There is lots of information out there that seems to go on an assumption of already having certain items. I don't have them (namely a frame?) so I can't even start.

Is there a tutorial about this someplace? How do I get kit frames for my VA characters when I get around to that? I'm completely befuddled.

Kit frames are the "holders" for your modules. You can get them on the exchange, fleet bases etc,.. for an Lt lvl character, you might need to get one of the lower level ones to start off with at the officer that sells basic weapons and gear.

Basically, KIt Frames and Modules are sets of abilities you can use on the ground. There's Tactical, Science and Engineering. Different frames/modules combinations provide different abilities.

Kit frames and modules are available as store purchases (Common only), random drops, mission rewards, Fleet items, and Rep projects.

You use a kit on any character by equipping a frame; then, drag-and-drop the modules into the frame slots that appear next to the frame in your character's Status screen.

If you only have a kit, you can equip that for a minor skill bonus if it's of Uncommon, Rare, Very Rare, or Ultra Rare quality; if you only have a kit module, you need to acquire a frame to put it into.

The simplest starting point is to hit up either your faction's Ground Equipment store at any faction hub, or to hit up the Exchange. You can also run Assimilation in the Borg Advance episode list for a level-appropriate kit frame and module as a mission reward; Surface Tension also has the kit frame for the Counter-Command Elite Ground set.

Also, be sure to check out the Exchange for any potential lock box kits and modules, as some are very handy indeed. Motivation is a good example; it provides your Tactical captain with a team-wide heal and damage buff at a reasonable cooldown, meaning you don't have to sit around waiting for a Sci to heal your Tac (or use hypos, or drop out of combat long enough to rub your Tribble, etc.)... and it's team-wide.

    Ok. Perhaps I wasn't clear.

I know WHAT the kit frame and modules are. That isn't the issue.

I have been to the ESD vendor and searched but I could not find anything called a kit frame for a low-level character. I searched the exchange, and no dice. I went to the Wiki and searched the web and could not find where to get them.

So, either I am looking in the wrong places, at the wrong vendor, and searching for the wrong item name on the exchange, or you're supposed to be just given one by default that is bound and therefore they aren't for sale and for some reason I didn't get the default one through some random bug.

I grasp the concept. I really like it, for the most part. However, I am not in and have never been in a fleet, so I don't have access to fleet-related resources, and I can't seem to find how I am supposed to outfit any character with a basic frame at Lt level. This means I have done the Azura mission with a small handicap of having no "kit" abilities for my Captain, and still have no clue where that frame is supposed to come from. I even bought a module at the vendor hoping that maybe it came with a frame or that it was like the old-style kits until you reached a certain level, but no - now I have 3 kit module items sitting in my inventory, and I cannot put them anywhere on my character.

Either the answer is so obvious that I am being utterly obtuse in not seeing it and I need someone to point at it and say "There it is!" or I am missing something that I was supposed to receive while zipping through the repetitive bits that I have done a dozen times already.

did you check all of Lessa's tabs? IIRC frames are in a separate equipment tab from modules.

[EDIT] Never mind, apparently others had the same idea, your Mailbox is full as far as the attachment limit goes... anyway, try going to:

    Earth Spacedock
    in the Requisitions area
    at the Personal Equipment shop
    talk to Ensign Lessa
select the third option, "Requisition Kits"

Hope that helps, and good luck :)

If it's a new character then there's a kit frame as a reward from one of the early missions in the story.
