Fun technobabble explanations for the Threat mechanic!

sophlogimosophlogimo Member Posts: 6,507 Arc User
So, there is a mechanic that makes NPC's attack you even though from a purely tactical point of view, that is probably not such a good idea, as those who want to attract Threat usually are most durable and do't do as much damage.

What could explain this strange phenomnon? Let's collect fake explanations, jst for the fun of it! :D

No. 1: You disrupt the target's sensors with ECM in such a way that they believe all or most of the damage they are receiving comes from you, making you a priority target.

No. 2: Your shields flutuate in such a way that they look as if they are about to collapse any time soon, i you jus treceive a little bit more damage.

Any other ideas? :)
Remember, STO is nothing but a cosmetics game, where only the rule of cool matters. The game mechanics are intentionally out of balance, don't try to "optimize" anything, as it would just frustrate you.

It's a simple case of overloading the targets sensory matrix with offensively structured data revolving around purely hypothetical and scientifically impossible scenarios that will result in said sensory matrix unable to process said data with rational methods. It will instead prioritise the removal of the source of troubled data so that normal processes can resume.

In other words, insult the target's mother so much in comms the target comes after you to shut you up.

I hail them with "Come At Me, Bro" while giving them "The Finger". But only in my T'varo and only while hiding cloaked behind a cruiser.

"Giles: Yes. Uh, uh, look, it's-it's classic battle strategy to throw one's opponent off his game. He-he-he's just trying to provoke you. Uh, to taunt you, to, to goad you into, uh, some mishap of some sort.
Xander: The nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah approach to battle?
Giles: Yes, Xander, once more you've managed to boil a complex thought down to its simplest possible form. "

Exactly, I stick my head out of the window (in space), put my thumbs in my ears, waggle my fingers, stick out my toungue and say "NYAH NYAH nyah, NYAH NYAH, nyah..."

then I quickly duck back in before the return fire starts...

(We tried projecting an image of our ship as a food source, but that only works if you know what every opponent species likes to eat.)

I just broadcast "Picard & Riker being cooler than everything " on a loop while in combat.

    EDIT

Really, I like to think of it as faking weakness. It'd actually be a pretty cool mechanic imo, faking a weakness and maybe casting a debuff of sorts onto the enemies targeting you? Captains could counter it with a kind of sensor scan power that actually confirms whether or not the opening is real or not.

    EDIT2
Maybe it could be a way for eng captains to be useful against BFAW spammers by dragging all the bfaw fire to them, rather than all the allies and pets?

Rickrolling them via subspace communicator = Minimal threat

Replying with "Darude Sandstorm" to all hails = Medium Threat

Justin Biebers face painted on the Hull = Massive Threat!!!

I use the tranporters, to randomly transport tribbles, throughout their entire ship.

Than I launch tribble torpedoes, directly at their ship!

All while dropping tribble mines, behind me as they chase me.

    Works great on Klingons!!!
