The Sovereign class looks far better than the Galaxy I think though its not surprising as it was designed that way. The designer wanted it to look good from all viewing angles unlike the Galaxy which they pretty much stuck to the underneath and forward view for it.

Andrew Probert designed the Connie-A and the Galaxy class.

Rick Sternbach designed the Sovereign class, as well as Voyager.

    Jim Martin designed the Defiant.

Three different people with their own styles of art.

Yep, some people liked the Ford Pinto also. I have to agree, the Galaxy is one of my least favorite ship designs. In this way I compare the Galaxy to my brother, it is TRIBBLE, but I still love it because it is canon.

You can still see a design progression in all of them. If you read through the various books and designer blogs over the years, you'd understand there was a thought process involved that took into account what came before in terms of ship design. There were certain design guidelines to follow when coming up with new ships. It's not like they just drew any old thing and said it's a Federation ship. The new Fed one we've seen looks like it belongs on Seaquest DSV to me, not Star Trek.

How can you say it is not progression in design; it has nacelles and a saucer!

I agree. The Galaxy 1701-D is a bit stubby and fat looking/feeling. It's a nice ship, but nothing of the graceful lines of the 1701/1701-A.

Most of that comes from the saucer being wider and skinner than most others and in relation to the width of the warp nacelles.

    I dunno, personally preference.

I must admit, I am not interested in any of the T6 ships; from what I've seen of them, they're not looking all that lovely either. I've six fleet ships across three characters, two of these are the iconic Galaxy and Nebula - two designs I happen to love.

I'm going to be a bit peeved off if I can't use these ships to their full capacity, and feel as though they should have T6 counterparts. They're going to need to sort their skins out at some point too, cause the Nebula still needs the Venture Skin and the Galaxy Dreadnought still needs the Monarch skin. :(

Nobody truly knows yet; it's all speculation.

We know we're getting a new type of Boff, but I don't know whether it's been clarified that it's directly connected to Tier #6 Ships. I wouldn't imagine it is though, simply because not everyone is going to want a Tier #6 Ship, so if the Boff is specific to those ships the community/cryptic is going to be split as half the players wont get it.

For all we know, a new type of Boff could mean as little as a new Boff option (Talaxian/Ocampa/Kazon) with a specific trait or ability that we've not seen before. I'd imagine we'll get a Diplomacy Boff (of sorts) when we enter the Delta Quadrant; someone like Tovan who'll take us through the new missions and sectors.

most of the ships if not all have also universal station. so in this case everybody could have it. just not higher abilities. where new ships could have higher abilites of new boff. and didnt they said new class of boff? so i guess its not just now species...

That might be irrelevant. For all we know, the new Boff might be a Universal one, in the sense that it'll act like a UniversaL Slot, it'll just be a Universal Boff? Failing that, it's more likely to be a Civilian Boff. I can't imagine what other class of Boff it might be.

They did, yeah, but with all respect to them, often times what is said and what is meant is quite different. I'm not taking anything literal until it's confirmed one way or another. :)

if this is it? no thanks. What an ugly POS.

I really hope our old ships stay on par with these new things. I really don't wanna give up my ambassador to fly that thing. Ever.

Yeah, that's pretty ugly alright. I suspect that many people who play STO are very much attached to the ships they have for aesthetic reasons and will shun these new pure T6 ships because of their appearance. Good thing they have some kind of path to enable older ships to keep up somehow...or so they say.

I do not get all the hate.. from the "its not canon" to its looks to military....

All the major power have taken huge losses over the last 40 years since the last "canon" show. All three took huge losses in the Dominion / Alpha quadrant war, then another Borg invasion, Romulains losing there home world and having a civil war while being invaded by the KDF, the KDF/FED war, The new Dominion invasion, Tholian conflict, the on going sphere war with the Voth and 8472.. and now expanding into the delta quadrent.

ALL three major powers would be making new and better designs for combat by now. To surmount the loss's. Federation would understand the need for more dedicated combat ships tp slow loses of hybrid exploration/combat ships (you would hope). KDF would want to come out with more effective ships after suffering all the loss's they have had, and the romulains are having to rebuild and would want designs that show a "new" Romulan republic and not keep build vestments of the old empire.

I for one have not problems with new designs.. I'd say my only issue by now the Federation would be building combat ships dedicated for fighting such as the Defiant. The Federations dedicated to saving lives makes no sense from them not to have a dedicated combat arm of Starfleet designed to save the lives of there personal with more effective combat ships.

The KDF would have to be thinking about there loss's and lack of winning anything. They would need to be looking at new designs so they do not bog down in another stalemate again.

Of course the Romulan Republic is trying to redo its forces and image away from the old Romulan Empire.

That would demand new ships, with new capability's and incorporating new technology that has been gained from the conflicts all three powers have been involved. Not reusing the same ships that have been being destroyed over and over for the last 40 years.
