Crafting Unusual Weapon Types?

I have been trying to see if this has already been addressed, but my searches came up empty so I'm asking now:

Can the R&D system be used to produce the non-standard weapon types, like Protonic Polaron or Biomolecular Phaser/Disruptor, or Romulan Plasma?

If so, how is that selection made? If not... : (

    Awww... what a let-down!

    I could have sworn I saw a Protonic Polaron Omni-Beam in one of the earlier dev posts about R&D.

    So my hopes of some wide-angle green phaser cannons are in vain. Alas! : (


    Not even Andorian Phasers, though? They have Fleet versions of those!
