If I open a Xindi lockbox on one character and a kit drops, will it automatically match the profession of that character, or is it in a "package" you can transfer to a different character of a different profession?
It will drop a Xindi Experimental Kit package (or similar) and if you open it, it gives a levelled Career Specific Kit.
Every kit I gotten has been of the Career of my char. As for level package /NO/. Had a level 30 char I just hit level with and opened a box I had with me form a key I had. It gave me a level 40 kit. I should of opened it when I was still level 39. I'm slow grinding a few chars to keep around the same levels as a few else where clan buddies getting into the game so wanted to keep them fixed up at that level to help them out. Even though the grind to 50 I found in this game isn't hard at all. I can push it in a few days if I really wanted to.

Don't use keys for that - these boxes sell for 40-60k EC on the exchange, buy them from there and mail them to your clan buddies (or fleetmates in STO terms) character@handle via the mail system.
