Development of this game has been either great or epic fail

rynotheking14rynotheking14 Member Posts: 0 Arc User
First off, let me start by saying that this thread was designed to discuss and reflect on issues in this game that can be improved. Feel free to comment and add to constructive criticism for PWE.

I would also like to state that I have been playing this game for a good amount of time (just over two years now) and have been around long enough to have a good idea of how this game is run.

Here are some of the most notable areas of improvement in my opinion for PWE and STO.

Accepting Criticism
To be a successful business, you HAVE to listen to your customers. This is where I feel Cryptic, or more accurately Perfect World Entertainement has most epicly failed and could have avoided many other failures.

How many times has the community (both in game and on the forum) said that they DO NOT WANT SOMETHING and had it forced on them anyways? The answer to this question is FAR TOO MANY. Fellow STO players, feel free to post as replies examples of this issue. I could understand a few "features" being added into the game that are of sole interest to PWE in order to make money, but what I cannot understand is basically ignoring everything the playerbase has to say and then complaining that you are not receiving "constructive feedback". Well, sorry that everything isn't constructive anymore, but that's what happens when you keep ignoring people, they get mad...

The Upcoming Expansion
This was the last straw with me, and ultimately what triggered me to write this extensive post. Who in the right mind decided that it was a brilliant idea to unveil an expansion by giving only the smallest of details that EVERYONE with a brain is left with a million questions? Creating a little bit of suspense is a brilliant idea in order to get people excited to invest in your product, but not when it causes extreme concerns over the very product you want to sell. For example, by being vague and simply telling people that everything they have worked on for in some cases thousands of hours is going to be "competitive" without defining "competitive" is alarming. Does competitive mean I will be able to continue to PvP without getting destroyed in five seconds by the latest and greatest pay-to-win toy? Or does competitive mean I will be able to complete ESTFs?

A simple fix for this would have been to only release information that does not trigger further questions, for example show off the new ship designs but not mention T6. Furthermore, if you wanted to have the same kind of press conference at the convention, you should have had dev blogs posted IMMEDIATLY after detailing EVERYTHING that was mentioned. If you aren't ready to unveil a product, don't do it. Is it really that hard?

Bugs
Something that I have noticed with this game is that a bug is only fixed if it has a direct monetary benefit for PWE, for example the removal of being able to slot multiple research XP projects in the same school. This bug was fixed almost immediately, while SEVERE bugs like FAW not draining power and not critting took months to fix. Fellow STO players, please feel free to elaborate in this thread detailing more of these bugs so that PWE can finally fix them. It wouldn't be such a big deal if this were a one off, but the fact of the matter is that it's a weekly occurance. I understand that you guys are a business and need to make a profit, but sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture. No matter how many additional features are added, if a product has too many flaws, consumers will start getting angry and spend their time and money on a more reliable product. I am not asking that you fix ALL the bugs now, but only that you at least accept many reported bugs as a known issue and proceed to slowly fixing them instead of saying "we are working on it". Actions speak louder than words!

Other than these three major problems and all issues stemming from them, I do not feel that this game has failed in any other way. So job well done I guess...

All of this being said, I still do like the game and still play it because I am waiting for another MMO to be released that peaks my interests. When one is released, perhaps Star Citizen or something else that has less of these issues, myself and many others will be gone.

Please fix your game before it is too late.

Thank you for listening PWE, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,
A STO player who wants your game to succeed.

I don't have a problem with this game. I enjoy playing it and I am looking forward to the new expansion.

I do think Cryptic should ban a few users on the forums for their personal attacks on the Devs. Its one thing to give feedback with clearly defined idea's but just saying you suck, you fail and ******** all the time should be reasons for being banned from the forums.

Just going to comment on the info part. It's called a teaser. Teasers get you hyped. It has been said many times there is a slew of dev blogs coming. Are people so impatient they want it right now? If they gave us every blog right now, people would have nothing to look forward to for 2 months.

I can assure you there would be complaining.

When movies do teaser trailers, they don't give out info there and I don't see people get all upset over that. Why is it the case here? What is it about this game that attracts the kind of people who go nuts in the wrong way over a teaser?

Every other game I've ever seen has pretty much had the population go "Oh that's cool! Can't wait to find out more!"

Problem with showing " teasers " to this community is its comparable to fanning poisonous fumes towards a caged mouse.

You know what, I'm getting sick and tired of certain players in the community throwing tantrums when they don't get their way

Its getting pathetic, At some point the line has to be drawn between legitimate criticism and embittered ranting.

( I'm not just referring to recent expansions here, This is just the general state of the community when looking at the forums , The rampant lack of respect is not conducive to a healthy recourse between players or developers, Abusing a state of anonymity in order to post disrespectful and aggressive responses is childish )

Right, it's in the reading - not the writing.

I'll say this, having been with Cryptic since the days of CoH. Essentially the exact same things have been repeated at them - and every other MMO Dev team I've ever seen.

At STLV, at the Cryptic social at the bar that evening, they took hours well outside of their expected scheduled time for 2, and 2 things alone:

    1) To entertain a non-stop parade of hounding complaints from players concerned with pet issues. Some of which totally legit. But it's amazing how much breath players are willing to expend

    2) To give away free ****.

I'll just say it. The playerbase that's represented by these forums is filled with whining, entitled babies. Feel free to disagree, or believe that I'm not talking about you - it's a generalization, admittedly.

There's solidly productive work that goes on from players - bug reports.

But yeah - were I them, i wouldn't even bother with pretty much any of this until October. There's already a few instances of Devs at the very least popping in to dispell the most utterly misinformed stuff on the boards.

Define what Star Trek is. Obviously my definition would be different than whatever definition you came up with. Everyone has a different definition of what Star Trek is to them. We are simply playing Cryptic's version of Star Trek. There is also the problem that everyone wants something different. Some players like raids, some like PvP, some like Exploration, and some like story content. The end result is a completely fractured playerbase that can't agree with what STO should have. Even if you think that something is horrible, then someone will like it.

Therefore, the devs listen to almost all their customers, but they can't satisfy everyone. Obviously, the devs don't listen to players that says X sucks. They listen to players that says X sucks because....and give reasonable arguments about why it sucks. Whether they actually do anything about it depends on if they have the resources to fix it, has a high enough priority to fix it, and is within their version of what Star Trek should be.

tl;dr, another entitlement claim thread. just one more satisfied customer. fyi the team havent listened in the past except for one or two occasions as a moment of weakness, from their view they have been burned for it, the biggest of these is the design an enterprise f contest, turns out it was north america only, they really got bitten for that and never done it again, its also the only thing i will never forgive them for by making it NA only. the other notable thing try also gotten bitten for time and again is releasing information on future projects that never materialized. to their thinking why bother with the community just pretend to listen and then have the mods inadvertently run interference over the whole thing to diffuse the situation. same old same old.

they wont change over night and i cant see it coming. so i accepted that they will release what they like including dinosaurs with freaking lasers on their heads and i can play it or i can leave the game, since i dont see myself leaving with disasters like season 8 or whatever, more then anything the team provides something interesting every other time and im just looking at it and enjoying myself as the nerd rage goes off like this in the quote.

Indeed, that is what i think people making the announcement thought was going to happen.

However, the OP made an excellent point.

The nature of the information in such a teaser has to be selected carefully.

The announcement of tier 6 ships was not teaser material....it's light a fire under the player-base and feed them even more juicy tidbits material.

I find it hard to see this rollout, like 9.5, as anything except flawed from the PR point of view.

Nobody can say, with certainty, but the issue appears to be a the PW end, rather than the cryptic end.

Bad advice on how players may react to things maybe. A less than diligent attitude to getting posts out on time and accurate. Who knows what the problem is exactly.

But I think we're a long way past the point where the actual existence of a PR problem at PWs end is merely theoretical.

great game, does exactly what it is supposed to, caters to the community perfectly.

What it doesent do is cater to the 1% or less who pvp's, or min-maxes so they can run a ship that can do ESTF's in 150 seconds. It makes no apologies to this minority, nor should it.

Every.Single.Time. I see someone lament their concerns or show their sense of entitlement, it is clear that they dont understand the f2p model, they dont understand the Intellectual Property Agreement, they dont understand the fact that this is a game made Primarily for Star Trek Fans.

Star Trek Fans. Not Gamers, not Hardcore PVP'ers, not Elitestjerks.com, not CataBabies. Star Trek Fans. People who watch all the shows and want to continue their experience interact with like minded people, and have a sense that they are a part of the Star Trek universe themselves.

If you dont like the game, get out. Now. Go play WoW. Go play Starcraft, Go play Eve, Go play Star Citizen. Play anything but STO. play something that you think is GOOD. Clearly you dont like it here, and whatever convoluted desires for the game your sense of entitlement gives you just arent gonna happen, and the sooner you uninstall sto, the sooner you will be doing yourself a huge favor.

Didn't say you were, My apologies if it came accross that way, But as a general comment on the community I stand by my statement

Also anyone is allowed to say anything they want ( except of course anything in the TOS agreement) What I'm saying is the petty ranting, while permitted, is not helpful

Yeah we had 3 stfs. Infected, Cure, Khitomer back when they weren't seperated into space and ground and qued ( I don't count terradome. It had no rewards, nothing. ). Took an hour or so per, no biggie. That reminds me, there wasn't a pve que prior to f2p. If you were kdf, sit in a channel and ask people for hours to get interested in running a stf.

But that was it, nothing else. And thats all we had from what, the beginning of the game all the way to f2p?

Well, guess who paid thousands, the consumer. They took the risk knowing that their purchase could be changed at any time. Besides, the devs continue to speak how nothing will be obsolete. Are people so blind or so far back in the bandwagon they are too ignorant/arrogant to believe anything else?

Am I not allowed to simply express what I feel are the top three problems with this game in a respectful manner? This is my first thread so I am not one of those "certain players"

You haven't done so in a respectful manner. I mean ****'s sake, read your thread title.

Well, guess who paid thousands, the consumer. They took the risk knowing that their purchase could be changed at any time. Besides, the devs continue to speak how nothing will be obsolete. Only thing anyone shouldn't believe is anyone saying, " KDF will get updates and new ships! "

All joking aside, no way Cryptic will burn the pasture the cash cows live in.

Thankfully I have spent very little on this game.

If nothing will be obsolete, it is only reasonable to explain how during the same sentence, or at least give a hint at how.

Not doing so is only asking for threads like this to be posted.
