Hey like everyone else I'm really excited about the new expansion.
However I'm not happy about your way of saying that "T5 ships will not become obsolete". It all sounded very much like partial upgrades only. Well here's my perspective. I dished out tons of ec, lobi, zen etc. for a top of the notch ships because I wanted top of the notch. I'm not comforted by the fact that it doesn't become "obsolete" in your terms. Once it's not top of the notch anymore it is obsolete. And if I have paid 25$(50$) for a ship, or 800 lobi or 200M+ EC on the exchange then I want to be able to do full T6 top of the notch upgrades on my ships. Not just some T5 with some added stuff. Thank you.
As someone who has never spend a dime on a lockbox, I will look forward to only having spend $25 - $30 to walk into a ship just as powerful as a ship that someone dropped hundreds of dollars on.
Oh,,,,, but dont worry... you will be able to play the lockbox gamble again and try for a new T6+ ship.

Yes that is a callous response, but it is the nature of a consumer society, your top notch phone, car, computer chip, TV screen, etc WILL be obsolete at some point in time.
The exclusivity of being at the top end for a time is what you payed for, but they are going to want you to pay agian and again and again if you want to stay at the top

you wont get the T6 only bells and whistles. they have to have SOME reason for people to buy the new ships. but old ships will beable to be competitive in level 60 content. as honestly, it sounds like T6 ships are mostly going for their "Bells and whistles" so why would anyone buy them if you can upgrade older ships to have such abilities?
The new T6 ships are being designed aorund these powers, they might not be something you can just "slap on" another ship.

Well that's not too bad as long as I can shoot and explode stuff equally with t6 ships and the T6 is based on fancy abilities only then yeah I can live with that to a point.
Monkey see, Monkey do. Monkey flings Feathered Monkey poo...
In fairness, Al also said that tier 5 ships would still be viable all the way to level 60. So maybe the tier 6 ships just have some extra bells and whistles on them that tier 5 ships don't (assuming we don't upgrade our tier 5 ships to gain those bells and whistles).
And then X3 comes out and your ship is obsolete. We'll see you then!
Seriously though, they should be treading lightly as their entire business model is about new ships in lockboxes.
Curious as to why they would announce this a couple months in advance and not offer any details. Just who will continue to buy keys and open boxes at this point?
I am okay with that because I will just have to kick in another $25 or so and will laugh at all the tears of the players hundreds of more $$$ to get the t6.5 lockbox ships.
I but I do agree with you on the logic of annoucing ship and gear upgrades months before they come out. I can't see why anyone would spend on anything on stuff till they see where the chips fall.

What is special about lockbox ships vs c-store bundle ships?
I mean I know cryptic makes most of their money from lockboxes, but why are players saying dont TRIBBLE lockbox but go ahead and TRIBBLE everything else
Apparently Cryptic decided to troll everyone with X2. There is no way Tier V is going to be as good as Tier 6. Doesn't make sense! Unless they introduce a means to upgrade or auto upgrade all lockbox ships I don't see this end very well.
Remember, on average, it takes hundreds of lock box openings to get 1 ship! That is either hundreds of dollars or months of grinding or a combination of the 2. Go ahead and shout me down. I for one am glad I stop spending on this game 9 months ago. Everyday they make my decision seem more prudent than ever.
"With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censored, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."
The amount of knee-jerk reactions since this announcement is nothing less than amazing.
Thing is, the point that has most people riled up was a pretty sure bet to do so.
Sadly, this very predictable flashpoint seems not to have been anticipated.
Because the simple solution of a dev blog, posted on GNN, and explaining the mechanics of upgrade is missing.
CM and PR have not been as good as they could have been recently.
As the last and most vital link in the chain from the devs to the players, it is saddening that the game has not been raised for this important announcement

I don't disagree. Cryptic/PWE really needs to work on their communication better. Although I'm thankful for JHeinig and Quack trying to address what they can.
At the same time, I think it's reasonable to expect people on the forums to act like adults and be prepared for more detailed information soon. Not Soon(tm).
But since I'm not that naive, all I can do is shake my head at all the knee-jerk reactions over things we don't have all the facts on.

I always assumed it's the novelty of cross-faction ships and different unlocks with each. Galors and Bugs and Xindi Carriers for everyone, even though we can't be Xindi, Cardassians OR Dominion yet. Then there's the Cell ship....It *almost* makes sense for Romulans. Then again, CPT Archer captured a Cell ship, didn't he? And Sisko captured a Bug, right? So there you have it. It's a novelty pedastalized by canon made overkill by promotion.
My Old Blog about things that could and should have been added when I wrote it. Not sure what I want to do with it now. I'll just keep it available now that most of it is outdated.
I'll be fine as long as they don't TRIBBLE my infinitely-leveling spiral wave disruptors*. When I hit 60 they better be on par with a Mk XIV beam array.
Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.
I'm half expecting Al to say that current lockbox ships will stay Tier 5+, but won't get upgraded. But anyone opening lockboxes after X2 goes live, will be Tier 6! :P

As I recall the game has a minimum age of 13 so not everybody on the forums will be an adult.

The masses that refuse to visit the website, forums or any podcast in relation to this game. Thats who.
I can guarantee there will be an influx of disgruntled players streaming in Post X2 Launch complaining they bought at T5 ship off the Cstore just days before the Launch and they want a refund.
Meh, just let us upgrade them with an extra 10% shields and hull and an additional console slot, like we do with Fleet ships. I'd even be willing to pay one Fleet Module apiece for it.
Didn't the bug ship get a free upgrade in stats when fleet ships came out? Its been so long I'm fuzzy on that. Maybe they'll do the same again for lockbox ships? Who knows. /devilsadvocate
Ships go obsolete every time new changes are made. Same goes for equipment. That's the nature of online games. Besides, lockbox ships are not top of the line like you seem to think. I know of a few Cstore and dilithium ships that can easily take on any lockbox ship. Bottom line is, you paid for what you got, and you may have done it at the wrong time. That's how it goes. You don't buy a 600 dollar phone, find out there's a better one for a 1000 a week later, and demand a free upgrade, do you? It works the same way here.

Yeah, it got an additional console slot and brought it up to 10.
Its pretty simple: Either they make a real good and easy upgrade, or they will just kill the game with x2. "this far, no further" comes to mind, if T5 ships, Fleetgear and co are reduced to just being viable, but not being competetive.
I mean, I guess the new advancement system will be a big, timegated grind with "finish-now" buttons, so it doesnt really impact much on player satisfaction. Because seriously, one more grind cant hurt...

That is all I can guarantee.

It would be ridiculous to have people spent the most on these kind of ships and not guarantee that they actually remain among the most valuable ships.
I am okay with that because I will just have to kick in another $25 or so and will laugh at all the tears of the players hundreds of more $$$ to get the t6.5 lockbox ships.

Any arbitrary change for $$ applies the same
