Installed arc and ended up with a two different bsod- blue screen of death. First, system32/software ended up corrupted. had to use the repair file. tried to install arc again....totally crashed the harddrive. it's gone. repair programs do not even see that a drive exists.
was fine with sto until i tried to use arc with it. lost a computer now. did arc destroy my harddrive?

Arc cant do that to your hard drive, that was unrelated
I thank you, but, I won't be testing your theory since I can't afford to lose another computer in case there is a virus issue as some on other boards state there is an issue. search arc virus issues.
I figure arc will not replace my pc, so, Arc has me saying goodbye to STO. Too bad to. I enjoyed it. I'm glad I did not spend anymore money in July yet on zen.
If you really think ARC is a virus that destroys hard drives then maybe you should seek professional help. How would making people install it help a gaming company? You should look into how old your rig is and where you've been browsing.

You guys are probably right, and I understand what you are saying, but I will not chance my money on it. I'm in the poverty class regarding income. I now will be saving for months to buy a new 'rig' as you call it. I had no issues until I installed Arc. I will not do that again.
I don't believe you can install the game through steam anymore. I reinstalled my OS about 3 weeks ago, and all steam did was forward me to the STO website, which directed me to ARC.
What I did was search for an older, pre-ARC installer file and used that to install the game. Took much longer over 4G that way with massive patches, but no ARC in sight.
I my self don't have ARC I found one of the older installs on the net and I didn't mind the wait to down load everything. I just watched TV until it finished.
I to am in the computer repair field and have been for about 20 years, so yes programs depending on what is loaded can blow your hard drive. There are a mix of things if you load them on a XP system that will fry it so its only logical that the same can be said for windows 7 or 8. I do how ever have a friend that installed ARC on a brand new Dell I 7 quad core 16 gig of ram 2 gig NVID graphics card which is far more then this game needs and he called me in mid install saying it totally locked up his computer. He ended up having to pull the plug on the system and restart it that way the reset button would not even work nor the power button. I grant you he is no computer wiz but he knows enough to know he didn't do any thing but hit the install button. To make a long story short we ended up having to blow the partitions on his computer re formatting the drive and reinstalling his OS. I will let all of you make up your own mind about that but I my self find it really odd for what all I have seen on a computer.
ARC its self from what I have used and seen of it is pretty crappy. I have deleted all of Cryptics games but STO. I hope any one who has ARC does not have any troubles but for those who have had issues I have seen them first hand and I feel your pain because mainly I am the one fixing the mess.
After using STO for almost a year, I had to uninstall it and reinstall it. I tried ARC, and it wouldn't let me install STO. Also, I had trouble with my internet explorer. I couldn't even look up things on the net.
I had to uninstall ARC, and a friend helped me to find a way to download the original version of STO. Took a while, however it is working fine now.

This. And OP you can still install STO without ARC through steam.

Thanks. Come next year, maybe I will look into that. I have heard nothing but bad things about steam though. I know nothing about it myself.
Im not sure who told you bad things about steam, but i have been using it for 2+ years with 0 problems
Forums for other games. But I take that stuff with a grain of salt. I do become skeptical because smoke signals problems.
