I just loaded it up (and downloaded the patch) so if you haven't yet, try closing it and reopening see what that does. If nothing happens, go into where you have STO installed there should be an error text file and should have some data in it as well

Its probably because the majority of STO players aren't having any issues, as I can see hundreds off players in STO... And if the majority of players were suffering from patch caused crashes, you would see the STO forums in a complete up-roar over this...
Now if you were to actually post some diagnostic information so that other players could help you...

Why don't you stop trolling people? So because the majority of the playerbase is able to play, does that make us expendable because we can't? We are paying customers too you know.
And the information was already posted. The screen locks up at the Cryptic page, then crashes to a Window saying "Fatal Error: Unable to initialize on-demand patching and connect to Patch Server"

A first grader could come up with the same description... (We're not mind readers here...) What is needed here is something more technical in nature...
So the error message you have indicates that this is a issue with connecting to the STO servers... So we need some network diagnostic data, such as the 'Trace Route' and 'Net Test' results described in this thread http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=225155

Now if you only noticed the posting dates of that thread, and see how long it was made sticky...
Now with the exceptions of hops 7, 8 and 9 (which could be a false positive from their configuration) your network latency values are well within expected norms. (but latency isn't everything)... Hop #6 looks a little suspicious, but is not proof by itself of a problem...
We still need the 'Net Test' results, which test for sustained network throughput, as well as open ports...
And while your at it, use the 'pathping' command, which has the same syntax as the 'tracert' command, which will check for lost or thrown away data packets on your connection route... and post those results as well...

Note for Cryptic. When you get the crash log popup after the STO timeout error, the window is only open for 3-4 seconds. This makes it so information can not be put into the text window. The text window will not except copy/paste data, otherwise I'd attach a copy of these logs.
Now 'Net Test' talks to a simple diagnostic server located on the same local network as the STO servers, so if 'Net Test' can't make a connection, this shows that this is a network route connection issue, (or perhaps a firewall issue, which would produce the same symptoms) and not a issue with the STO servers...
Now what is causing the problem... Evidently, hop #3 (which is the gateway between SBC private address space and the public Internet) does not support the protocol that 'Path Ping' uses.
Trace Route shows that network latency looks fine, but latency has become less and less useful for diagnostics, as recent Internet backbone routers, instead of queuing up data packets and processing them as time permits, now will simply 'drop' packets that they can't immediately process in a quest for faster network performance...
With SBC blocking 'Path Ping' diagnostics your only real alternative is to contact SBC Technical Support and ask their assistance with diagnosing your connection issue with the STO Servers...

It depends on what the problem is... There is no universal fix for Internet Route Connection issues. And many of the problems can only be corrected by the ISP involved
I am sorry to but in, but I am a lifer, and have played the same game from the same updated launcher for years, not router problems, no ISP change, speed test 26 MB per Second Down, and 4 MB per sec. UP, I can get to and on EVERY other internet game, Yet it is our problem somehow?
The ONLY thing that has changed is CRYPTIC's Patch to 9.5. . .
I don't even know how to run the tests you folks have already run, so am I just out of luck because some majority can still get on?
If Cryptic wants MY Money, they will at the very least help me fix this log on problem. And I can't even find a clear way to get them to answer ANY Tickets I have already put in, and my error text box is empty also, one would think they could at least have the launcher catch and display it's own errors in a file or something. . .
I am a fleet leader who can't get on to take care of his fleet and I guess I am done. . .
But I do appreciate you all trying to help us even though Cryptic and PW will NOT. . . Thanks folks your the best!
