Merit

I need to promote bridge officers so I can use their abilities on my ships. Problem is, I don't have enough merit. So, I'm hobbled before the first shot is even fired in a firefight.

So, how do I gain a ton of merit? What are the best ways to pick up Merit points fast?

Thanks in advance.

fly missions (team up or join a fleet to team with) skill boosts also if you team with a 700 day + vet (like me) you get another 5% bonus, trust me you will have millions to spare by a few months in.. MILLIONS...

Do you mean the PVPs? I'm a 700 day vet, but I haven't played in a couple of years and I completely forgot everything lol

no, to get merits... AKA expertiese AKA Bridge officer Experience points, you just run normal missions, anything that awards XP will give you bridge officer expertise as well. merits dont exist anymore, they were changed over to expertise.

Merit does exist. It's preventing me from promoting my officers.
It's not fair that I am expected to fight level 20 ships with one hand tied behind my back. I guarantee you those npc ships have all their officers properly promoted so they can use all their abilities (I've noticed the fights are tougher the higher in level I am).

Do system patrol missions as well.

They are quick, easy and give a decent amount of exp and skill points.

The only thing is preventing you for promoting your officers is the lack of expertise. Merits doesnt exist.

The same expertise your captain gains, is used to promote bridge officers.

Most things in STO will award you with skill points and expertise in equal amounts, skill points are what you use to improve your captains skills, expertise is what you use to improve the skills of your BOFFs.

Boffs can't be promoted until you reach lvl10, at lvl10 you can promote them one rank, but only if you have spent 1000 expertise on improving their skills, the same happens when you get to lvl20 and again at lvl30.

Merit simply hasn't existed in STO since the currency revamp and that was.. oh, s4? Definitely pre f2p anyway.

Well if your character is not level 50 then just keep running missions. Before level 50 Expertise is split between training your bridge officers and training your captain. If you are level 50 then all of the points go into one pool called expertise, which is used for training Boffs and for reps.

As to promoting them In the ui go to the skills tab click on the boff you want to promote. you will see the boffs skills and the ones you can currently train will be lit up and there will be arrows on both ends. click the arrows to fill up the skills then click accept. At that point the promote will light up click that and then the confirm, to promote to the next rank. Repeat until you finish. You can only promote them to one level below your current rank.

If for some reason you do have a screen that calls for "merit" Then that is a bug and you need to fill a support ticket. Everything uses Expertise now so there is no "Merit"

    I hope this helps.

One more thing: You can not promote a BOFF to a higher rank until you have spent a certain minimum amount of Expertise in training up said BOFF's lower-ranking skills. If you attempt to do so, then you will be told that the BOFF does not have enough experience.

Right. The process of promoting a Boff goes as follows:

    1. Earn Expertise by killing things, completing missions, or doing Doff assingments. Most anything you do in the game will earn you some amount of Skill Points for you captain, and Expertise for your Boffs (and other purposes).

    2. Spend some of the Expertise by upgrading your Boff's current skills. The more points you invest, the less of a cooldown the skill has. Generally you should work toward maxing them all out, you can always get more Expertise and you can max all of a Boff's space and ground skills.

    3. Once you've spent enough, and assuming your captain is high enough rank, the Promote button will appear on your Boff's skills tab. Promote them to the next rank to gain access to their next ground and space skills. You can't promote your Boffs to be equal to your captain. For example, if your captain's rank is Commander, you can only promote Boffs to Lieutenant Commander.

I really hope they overhaul the Boff system at some point, it has to be one of the biggest pain points left in the game. Unlike other broken systems like crafting and PvP, you HAVE to deal with Boffs.
