Is there a recommended gear level to do the elite missions?

I know gear is not what its all about it is down to skill but I was wondering if there is a recommended gear level for elites.

Many thanks

White MK XI guns & consoles, Solanae 3-4pc or Cheap-As-Free Purple XII Trash from Exchange is fine. That's how I run most of my ships, because I am not Crosis and I am not made of money. Upgrade with anything suitable you get out of the Freebie Boxes. The quality difference between various pieces is relatively small and the skill choices you make count for more than your gear. Especially since you need to actually BEAT the rep in order to actually get gear out of it to begin with...at which point you've already won, so don't need it. If you find yourself melting too much, you can buy Elite Fleet Shield, but they're very expensive.

This is good enough for 3rd place rewards with optionals at ICE and KASE - my Vulcan main's ship.

Doesn't list Boffs for some reason, those are:

    TT1, BFAW2
    EPTS1, RSP2, ES3, A2SIF3
    ET1, EPTW2, DEM2
    HE1, TB2
    PH1

Total cost to me is probably 1-2 million EC, and 100k Dil.

The usual Aux2Bat-Alternative to Your build with some modifications, cbrjwrr - getting the neccessary technicians is quite affordeable through the B'Tran-Cluster colonization chain.

    That is not "free" gear...

Reputation systems are not "free" you need A LOT of time to do em.

Any elite mission can be done with any equipment, even white mkXI if you have other players support.

Its more of a player skill level at shipbuilding etc. If you know how to build your ship, you can survive and dps well enough in pretty weak gear, more or less free stuff. Blue XI across the board or better would be ideal, but more important is understanding your BO skills to keep yourself alive, power levels, when to use emergency buttons, why gravity well is important on slow moving borg cubes or crystal, etc.

A group can do the content with very low dps, if people do their jobs. Or a group can overwhelm it with dps, and no one has to do much of anything except shoot and stay alive. Most folks go for the big damage....

anyway, play them on normal for a while to see how it goes, learn the strategy and where to go and what to do for each. Then try the easier ones like ICE on elite to see if you can handle it. Try to get shot when you do it the first time --- anyone can go in with low damage and let someone else take all the hits and do all the damage and get marks without contributing a lot to the team. If you can kill the trash while being shot by it without dying, you are ready. If not, try to figure out is most useful to improve and go earn an item for that slot...

Everything that requires time in STO is not "free". Because time is the real "money" in STO. You can play STO and not even waste 1 single cent of real money in the game, and still buy stuff with real money. But that requires TIME. So, yes reputation stuff is not "free". It doesnt matter if it takes 1 month or 6, still it isnt "free".

You talking thinking on people who wastes a lot of time playing, but a lot of people dont even have 45 minutes to spare in their lifes everyday. But again, i suposse you forgot about people who have a real life... :P

They make instant gratification single player games for people with real life's not MMO's

your times value doesnt factor in sorry

i suggest trying online poker or something like that for a quick thrill

I dont have a clue what did you try to say in your first sentence (really poor grammar skills) but i can imagine.

I dont need to find online poker lol, i have several hours a day to play STO.

    You didnt get the point.

As a MMORPG, and specifically this one, STO, you will require a lot of TIME to do everything. And that ammount of time you invest is what you are "paying" for playing the game. You can achieve EVERYTHING in STO just investing a lot of time, as i said, even buying stuff that costs real money.
Reputations are not different, and they are designed that way, with projects of 1 day cooldown and so on.

Nothing that requires that ammount of time in STO can be considered "free". When someone trade dilithium for zen, you are buying the time someone's invested in gathering that resource.

And this is the way STO is working since beta.

    Dilithium <-> Zen
    Time <-> Money

Some people have an abundance of time, represented by dilithium (this is why Cryptic calls dil a "time based currency" since it's tied to the time you put into the game). Some people have an abundance of money, represented by Zen. STO's F2P model allows for people with said abundances to trade amongst themselves to get what they lack. You could phrase it as everything in STO costing time, or as everything in STO costing money, both would be accurate if that's how you choose to play. Really things cost whatever combination of time and money you are willing to provide.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand, you can put together a decent setup by replaying episodes. The info is in deianirrah's thread. A Solanae shield/engine/deflector set and a set of whatever weapons should be plenty to get started.

You can run the Elite instances of this game without any Reputation or Fleet equipment.

What matters really are the stats that reinforce the build you are going for. For example, if you merely want defense, Positronic Deflectors are ideal. If you are on a Science Vessel using Tractors & Gravity Wells, Graviton Deflectors are ideal, as well as a few Graviton Generator Consoles.

For Omega STFs, I suggest taking whatever shield type you prefer and ensure it has Plasma Resists.

The only real "work" you need to do for becoming a reliable player in Elite instances is learning what you're supposed to do for these instances. Getting a grasp of the mission flow at Normal level will expose you to the basic requirements. Once you're comfortable with that, then move onto Elite, or maybe jump into this with friends that will take you through. The former is highly recommended since it would be friends carrying you knowing that you're new and will not be an issue at all compared to a PUG.

Honestly, if you knew what to do for a mission and how your ship & build factors towards the team's success into that mission, most esp. if something goes wrong, you won't need overly fancy gear with a fresh Lv50 character.

A savvy player can do the Elite content of this game in Lv40 ships (or even lower) with Mk IX / X Common gear and no special consoles or sets. The key is learning the missions.

Can't tell you how annoying it is to see some guy in the most expensive ship using the most exotic and expensive gear, and be an absolute, total failure in an instance. For me, it's hilarious to see something like Scimitars, JHAS, Nicors, etc. outfitted with the highest end gear and blow up repeatedly or just see it flown so badly.

A player that knows what to do regardless of ship & gear is a far better asset to a team than an overly equipped idiot.
