1. Give our own Starbase project
2. No more choosing after lvl 10, Just continue as an romulan
3. Get more stuff to the romulans...
Ideas, Suggestions fill it out here please !!
Hello. I am a Romulan player, and I approve of this post. Without deviation, obfuscation, or mental evasion. A very humble baseline for the faction we voted for. Nothing more, and nothing less. Just remember appropriate DOFF missions, and extended areas shutting out the other factions, and it should be good to go. Sharing is not very caring.
The only thing I want for my Romulan toons is dialogue that does not refer to or use references for KDF or FED (i.e., no more Qaplas or disassociated references that make my ROM toon feel like an outsider on New Romulus).
The whole faction concept should be dead since the war (or border conflict) came to an end with season 9. Make all PvP open teaming and treat them like wargames to prepare for the fights against all our enemies (Borg, Voth, Tholian, Undine, and so on...).
The Romulan visuals would be fine for those fleet leaders wanting a Romulan feel for a fleet with mostly Romulans as mains, but no new factions needed in game.

That is the most humorous thing I have heard all day. The absence of an active war between factions, should be synonymous with cultural and social abandonment for those involved? Having a common enemy signify assimilation on a grand scale, so you don't have to worry about faction differences?
Without any point of reference to any background source, for any kind of excuse, what exactly is it that we are doing here again? Grinding and farming? I think they sell some good simulators that enable you to do that.
The whole point of making virtual avatars in a virtual world, is linked to the connection you have to the virtual environment. Without the predefined IP associations, the floor falls out on this one. Playing a Feduromuklingon is as bad as it gets, when you start to background check the material involved. It is not merely a random story involving isolated groups, this is about entire Empires as well. And they must act in a manner that resonate with the sources.
Even the blandest fantasy RPGs have somewhat of a more consistent setup in most cases, just to illustrate where this is heading. Mostly into the fields, running around making crop circles, by the sound logic of zero faction differentiation, based on external ongoing events.
Which also is a bad idea when designing a RPG, where differentiation is the key to success, with choices that matters. Without a place of your own, you basically end up nowhere. That promptly defeats the purpose of doing something more specific. Like playing a Romulan in a star Trek universe. A very basic concept that now should be circumvented for the sake of "story"?
No story is good enough to take away your feeling of identity or place, and faction support is actually an expectation, unlike an exception, in most half-decent MMORPGs out there. There must be a connection to the background, or there is just no selling point based on the IP anymore. Should we play the game just for the sake of having played too long to quit? Is that the only "connection" left here? That simply will not do.

A summary... you disagree.... That is OK, and my statement still stands... we agree to disagree.

sernon, doing away with a system that only serves to hamper part of the player base is not the same thing as erasing all distinctions, cultural imperialism, or being assimilated into one grand Federation. The point to ending the faction system is to facilitate gameplay by allowing cross-faction teaming and thereby allowing KDF and KDF-allied Romulans to actually play some of those PvE queue missions which never pop apart from very rare occasions (usually only when there is some special event which increases gain from those missions). Plenty of games exist without a faction system like the one in STO which nevertheless have distinctions between types of player.

It is easier to tailor content to those without any individuality. No need for Powerboards, Sand Monuments, or special DOFFS. Or Plasma Weapons for that matter.
One big happy fleet. That is what I'm seeing here. And strangely, that makes me far from happy.

I completely agree with everything you said. And I also feel the same way, even though I'm not particulary attached to a single faction and like to play all sides.
Unfortunately, it seems that you, me and the likes of us are a minority that plays Star Trek Online around these forums, while most of the people play Dressup Online. You can add Barbie and Ken in there at your own convenience.

I once called this game a "Star Trek convention simulator". Where you could dress up and mingle in the favorite costume of your choice. This means that it is quite logical to have access to any or all content, since we are talking about your own intimate little wardrobe after all.
In another Cryptic game, City of Heroes, they removed the faction barriers, and with everything made the same, there was no longer a need to create alternate characters to experience something different.
With no faction support, the Red side was bleeding out, and then made into extended content for the Blue side. It follows that the Red side was re-populated, a little bit like Risa is now. But it was not a game of Heroes and Villains anymore. For the Villains no longer represented a "factual" entity. It looked more and more like a minor diversion for bored Heroes, that always would return after their "vacation".
It would be preferable to patch the broken past, but as always, the solution is to move forward and introduce a broken future, in the image of Ouroboros. The snake that devours itself. It is not very sustainable, for those that wanted something more than a free for all dress up party.
It is strange that it must be so hard to simply get to play a favorite faction in the Star Trek universe, without a thousand excuses and roadblocks meeting you at every turn. Basically that's all I'm here for, the party is the diversion, not vice versa. Now you can't even ask for the most basic features without being challenged as some kind of oddball. But I've never asked for anything different, and it was quite normal back in the days. And this is still an MMORPG in name. So as always, nothing unnatural being said or done here.

Well said! I agree with everything said here. I'm glad that I stopped playing SoH/CoV before all the stuff I have heard of bled it dry. I'd hate to see that happen here, with the 'homogenization' of the factions in many regards.
This is part of the reason why the end of the Klingon-Federation war fills me with unease, despite the way it got a bit silly.

First Cryptic lost this title EARLY on and it was a Paragon Studios game. Second considering I played it off and on before and after its shift to f2p and right up until close I can say, with certainty, you are talkin out your TRIBBLE and just making things up. Congrats on that.

You probably should have tried playing it for yourself instead of relying on others to make up your mind for you. The villain side of the game was quite alive and I never had any problems finding a team on either side of the fence in that game very quickly. Nor did I ever have a problem finding someone willing to help out real quick if I got into a spot where my build made things difficult in a certain segment of a quest.

Well I did play CoV for a while. Had a character I'd describe as a 'Necromancer-CEO' That I found rather entertaining to play .
Unfortunately opportunities to play fell off and I eventually stopped playing. I heard mutterings about problems much like sernonserculion described sometime after that. Still, sad to see such a fun game go like it did. RIP COH/COV.

We'll get our home back if City of Titans has any say in it. Wont be the same IP ofc, NCSuck is still refusing to budge there but that just opens plenty of new doors. Valiance Online is also showing plenty of promise... hell the only one that isn't is goldengirl's Heroes and Villians

It was a game designed and made by Cryptic, I know who took over. The point was to explain what transpired, not to name and shame though.
As for talking out of my TRIBBLE, you better be a bit more specific, for if you wanted to clarify something, that wasn't exactly very illuminating.
I can tell you right now that I played a little more than "on and off", to draw the above conclusions. If you want to contest something, then feel free to put some actual words to it. If you just want to blow hot air, then don't bother. I know exactly what happened, for I was there.

I'll let other veteran CoH/V players speak so you cannot naysay it anywhere as easily. I posted both your and catoblepasbeta's comments in toto to see what other veterans had to say. So far this is what I got:
Shane Hall Never had a problem teaming on red side at all.. in fact removing the faction barrier meant I could play a rogue/vigilante and team on both sides if I chose. really a very silly argument
Andrew Horner While I agree that I don't think the game was 'bled dry', redside wasn't really populated whenever I played it. When the alignment system started it had a boost from players wanting to bring redside AT's blue, but when you were able to start from any side with any AT I saw the population dwindle again. Not saying it was dead, but there has been many times it took a bit to find a few people to team with unless it was an SF.
Jeff Feldman I wouldn't say the faction barrier was "removed". It took WORK to become a Rogue or Vig. I would totally disagree with that view. Villans still existed, COV wasn't just extended Hero content...
Mike Blake For me, the redside ATs were always more appealing than redside stories. I only ever rolled one villain prior to the opening of side switching because I could never shake the feeling of being just another Arachnos lackey. Afterward I did have a few vigilantes so that I could partake in the occasional SF or raid. So I suppose I can cop to the position that sernonserculion takes a bit, at least the notion of redside being a diversion (and a hoop I had to jump through for patron powers).
As to the notion of what was a "factual" entity of a villain or hero... well, a character is defined by their actions; a lot of those alignment missions felt much more villainous (and self-directed) than anything I ever did on redside. I feel the attitude of Catoblepasbeta, that s/he got out while the going was good, couldn't be more wrong. If you wanted to be a villain, alignment missions and some of the last missions developed hit the spot.
Duane Xtenl opinions are the reflections of the person who posts them and do not necessarily present the actual situation
Zachary Palmer I loved that system. I genuinely enjoyed the villains ATs more(except trollers). Added bonus was as a strong RPer I could play a character that literally rode the fence between between good and evil versus just having a moody hero/villain I played several all the way through their story arcs and such. What really killed my experience was the architect. The flood of high level characters that had no idea about over half the content available, or how to play their toon, because there simply was no reason to leave the starting zone.
Toby Demoines Everybody's entitled to their own opinion. I never felt that way at all...
JoAnne Spencer Neither did I, and I spent quite a bit of time red-side with my Stalkers and Corruptor.
I'll let other veteran CoH/V players speak so you cannot naysay it anywhere as easily. I posted both your and catoblepasbeta's comments in toto to see what other veterans had to say. So far this is what I got:
Faction specific content dried up after the introduction of max level abilities and the expanded environment for CoV, and so did a good chunk of the Red player base, as the focus was directed towards shared content. With the faction tailored content drought, some just dropped the game, and some who used to be Blue, went back to their old ways. The net effect was less Villains, and more Heroes on average. And the effect became more noticeable as years rolled on. The Blue side remained more populous, and that is a fact.
Then they started to port abilities to both sides, since it was unfair that only one side should have something specific. With a few exceptions, like tweaked healing abilities for the Villains (Empath to Corruptor). With the result that everything started to look a bit similar, in that you had access to the same abilities. There was still some basic differences in the "classes" of course. A Controller never got the minions of a Mastermind. But as time went on, you basically had more of the same on both sides. Thus taking away the need to create a Villain, in order to see some new abilities. And vice versa of course.
With the "Going Rogue" expansion you could cross over for sure. Meaning that the distinction between Hero and Villain effectively was gone, since you now had not only ported abilities, but "crossover classes" as well. And I am using generic terms so outsiders will understand what I'm talking about. To say that the ability to cross over represented some kind of effective barrier, is not consistent with how I had my own "guild" members go off to grab badges on the other side. So that I no longer could team with them. It was a minor timesink, and not hard by any definition of that word. You could go back and forth, not instantly no. But the effect on the server doesn't need to be instant. That is an individual perspective after all. But the trend. The trend! It was not a minor thing.
So now you have a dominant Blue side, with a boosted Red side, but with imported characters made from the other side. But strangely never quite in a persistent way, after all the badges was found, they mysteriously disappeared again. I cannot speak for all the individuals out there, but I can speak of what happened on a server level. Yes they solved the population problem, you know, the one we didn't have, if I am lying or something. :P
That, and enough with the imported buddies. Stand up to your own insinuations!
*whole lotta bull that very few people experienced*
That, and enough with the imported buddies. Stand up to your own insinuations!

aww whats the matter? Don't like the fact that I was able to shoot down your statements using members of the actual CoH/V community? Sorry that I preemptively shot down your arguments that I was just 1 person and that my experiences were unique.
One thing is for sure awesome... we finally killed the round and round circle jerk this thread had become. When will you people realize that Proto has tunnel vision, blinders and a vault-tec door over her already closed mind? All ya do by arguing with her is increase her word count. :P She's in her own little world where she is right and refuses to be pulled out to see anything else

Some really nice personal opinions, but that doesn't mean they classify as facts. More like individual perceptions dwelling on moments in time. Try not to be stunned by the narrative of utter clarity that I presented! Loaded with facts! :P
And don't you try to excommunicate me, I had the third most active Supervillain group on my server, and played since Beta on CoV, and from the first month in CoH. ( Had some troubles with the modem, so could not register in time for the first few weeks. Overseas connection. Not optimal back then. )
There is some interesting parallels here with the notion of moving away from factions. It seems to me like a great way to repeat history. More shared content and faction abandonment? That rings a bell. If anything I have said today is true, that is bad news unless you're Blue. Statistically speaking.
P.S.
Never had a problem teaming on red side at all..

every time i see threads like this it makes me wonder what the ppl wanting the cardassians will think they will get, as the Cardies have no real military and are still recovering from the war the cardies will be even less interdependent than the romulans.
"It appears we have lost our sex appeal, captain."- Tuvok
My feeling is ... The winds of change are blowing ... Although, it's only a gentle breeze so far ( some might say it's more an odoriferous flatulent) however ... With the recent effort the Dev team has put into actually resolving some long standing, and some more recent issues, that have plagued primarily the Romulan Faction, I feel quietly confident.
It may just be that Cryptic has noticed the ... underlying theme ... behind most of the posts in this section, and realised that it may be time to put, just a little more effort into making Romulans happy.
The recent addition of a Romulan Powerboard to Risa and the addition af a Romulan Sand Castle, may seem like small insignificant things to some, but I can hope it signifies perhaps a slightly changing attitude within Cryptic about Romulans.

Really? They patched in that now recently? Lost the interest half-way because of those issues. Kudos to those that had faith enough to save up for it then. I just bought some generic board, being the eternal pessimist. Haha!
Edit: Might add that I agree that the small things matter. Without the finer details, how can there be a bigger picture in the first place.

And everytime I see a post like this I LMAO at people actually believeing that the Romulans can recuperate from 2 blown homeworlds, a civil war between warlords, a rise to power of an authoritan so called "Empress" with the help of alien force, the tyrany of Hakeev's Tal'Shiar and another civil war between the Tal'Shiar/RSE and the Romulan Republic, all this happening in time span of 20 years, and yet amount to a new homeworld and a fleet of Scimitars within a year - but somehow the Cardassians can't recuperate 40 years after a single war, right?

Because WE ARE ROMULAN!!!
We are the strongest and the mightiest, the bravest and the fiercest ... I at least, will NEVER forget what it means to be Romulan, and I will fight to the death to defend myself, my family my people, and the New Romulan Republic!

How bout the fact the Cardassians have 3 ships. PERIOD. And you can get 2 from lock boxes. To get carsassia in, they'd literally have to re-invent the wheel when it comes to ships.
Star Trek Battles member. Want to roll with a good group of people regardless of fleets and not have to worry about DPS while doing STFs? Come join the channel and join in the fun!

And what would that mystical second lockbox Cardassian ship besides the Galor be?
Re-invent the wheel? You mean like they did with the Romulans? Just how many canon Romulan ships do you think there were??
And that wasn't the point anyway, I just LOL'd at the in-universe explanation that makes someone laugh at the possibility of the Cardassians being a faction, while eating the even more crappy in-universe explanation about the RR becomming one with a spoon.

Personally I'd rather see the dominiion become a faction. Way more they can do there. I mean they were driven back, not completely defeated and they still have a war machine back there. So we only saw changlings, Vorta and Jem'Hadar. Could be 100 races that belong to the Dominion we've never seen that they hid.
Again, not much they can do with Cardassia except a carbon copy of the Romulans. Dominion, well, that's something else.

Funny, first your argument against a Cardassian faction is them only having 3 ships, one of which is given away in a lockbox, but then you say you'd like a Dominion faction which has what.....3-4 canon ships? 3 of which are given away via lockbox gambling.
But more to the point - STO doesn't need any more factions. Cryptic can barely handle one faction let alone the 3 they pretend to have in this game. KDF is lingering since....forever...and they almost completely dropped the ball on the RR a month or so after LoR. Adding more it would be...just LOL .
And one more thing about the Dominion - I'd like to see them as a faction - in some game that has another developer that can handle factions. Cryptic is already burning any differences between the factions with a fire, because they can't, won't or don't know how to handle anything more than Fed.
What would the Dominion faction become over here? A bad joke? A lackey of the Fed and the KDF? The armada that could singlehandedly conquer the Alpha & Beta Quadrants will need to cry for any crums that Feds and KDF can spare to throw at them? You really wanna see that happening?

Or they are the great equalizer that helps the alpha/beta quadrants keep the iconians and their lackeys out. Again their war machine was never touched so they've had time to build and build a lot.

That's the thing - they are powerfull. Significantly more than the Feds, KDF and Romulans combined.
It would be idiotic as hell to have them as a Fed or KDF sub-faction and if Cryptic manages to pull out another full faction that's at least on KDF current level while the game's still running, I'll grow wings and fly over the ocean to personally congratulate them.

---
The whole faction concept should be dead since the war (or border conflict) came to an end with season 9.

Agreed fully.
No one told me Tovan and Tiaru were an item.
[/SIGPIC]

This is part of the reason why the end of the Klingon-Federation war fills me with unease, despite the way it got a bit silly.
Unfortunately opportunities to play fell off and I eventually stopped playing. I heard mutterings about problems much like sernonserculion described sometime after that. Still, sad to see such a fun game go like it did. RIP COH/COV.
We'll get our home back if City of Titans has any say in it.

2 Factions will become 1?
The Devs dont want to make more factions and endless kitbash vessels (one of the few thing I agree with)
New starbases? $20,000.00 USD thats a sound investment.. NOT a good idea for players or the game...
---
aww whats the matter?
P.S.

"It appears we have lost our sex appeal, captain."- Tuvok
