I keep right mouse button pressed, direct camera with mouse to the ground and press forward keyboard button. You press "B" button (I think that is default key) and fly in tactical (shooter?) mode, maybe that will be easier for you.
Hold down the LEFT and RIGHT mouse buttons simultaneously and 'steer' using your mouse. I'd also recommend using a slower 'rented' Jetpack until you get used to it.
Remember too, that the Jetpack has a certain amount of "inertia" so to turn a sharp corner, you have to face pretty much 180deg. to turn.
It takes a bit of practice, but if you are a high enough rank to do the "Step Between the Stars" mission, you can get some good practice on that one.
um... no. Step has even worse handling than a rental floater...
I'd just get a basic floater. it's cheap enough that you can usually get enough favors in one run on foot. Yeah, 15m is enough to WALK to 10 horgahns. :P
The trick to stopping on a dime is to anticipate how long it will take to slow down and stop moving forward at the right time to coast the rest of the way. Of course you also need to be lined up just right.
I often turn the floater off if I'm directly over what I want.
I found the expensive JetPack much easier to control. Tribble helps too.
Not with descending, but for that, I simply use the self-distruct button (disengage floater). With a little training, you can get perfect aim.
Another trick is to account for inertial movement - so stop the thrusters before you reach your destination. Same for turning - start turning before you need to.

Shooter mode allows you to control what direction you're going via the mouse. Push the mouse forward, it flies up. Back, down. Left and right turns. You use the direction keys to move you forward, backward or strafe.
