This is getting ridiculous, I have literally tried everything from running it as administrator, adding exceptions to my firewall and antivirus, or turning them off completely, resetting my router, flushing the dns, trying it on steam, Arc and using the latest launcher from a thread on this forum, hell, I even decided to re-install windows 7 in case something was conflicting.
Three days, and still no response from tech support on my ticket...
There is something badly wrong with the launcher updating service, it should not be sitting there at 21.1mb remaining with the odd attempt at reconnecting, or looping from 20.8mb remaining back to 21.1mb.
I have tried it on two different pc's now, and am pretty much ready to give up on this game.
Anyone got any bright ideas? as I am pretty much fresh out of solutions.
This is quite ludicrous, I have been playing online games since 2003, I have played eve online, swg, eq2, wow, lotro, conan, city of heroes, potbs, the secret world, swtor, guild wars 1 and 2, elder scrolls online, and never have I remotely had the kind of problems sto is giving me.
Having to run nettest, and tracert etc. etc. is just ridiculous, these days you should be able to download, install and run a game, the guys running this game need to seriously look at the way this game is being implemented, having gone over the forums, facebook etc this is not an isolated issue, someone upin the hierachy needs to say 'this needs sorting out pronto'
This kinda hassle will put a lot of people off trying sto out, and doesn't bode well for the longevity of the game
Ok, cleared all cookies, didn't think of that one tbh but anything is worth a try atm..
...
Any ideas?
the 'Net Test' results are a little borderline, as expected results for the 1st and 3rd columns should be in the 300 - 500 or better range, and some of yours are below 300...
You might have a problem with 'dropped' (as in lost or thrown away) packets on your Internet path to the STO Servers. To check for this, use the 'pathping' command (which has the same syntax as the 'tracert' command) and post those results..

So I take it you don't have much experience putting together TCP/IP networks, or the history of networking...
What we call the 'Internet' was originally funded by the Defense Advance Research Project Administration of the US Government (DARPA for short) for a computer network to link together Defense Contractors and Research Collages and Universities so that they can share computer resources during someone else's off hours... The 'Internet' that we use today has gone well beyond its original intentions, and is amazing that has scaled up so well.
But with the rapid growth, comes a costs, where the demand for bandwidth is exceeding the capacity of some networks, as well as the growing business/politic dispute over 'Network Neutrality' and who has the rights, (as well as who pays...) for access to the limited bandwidth... (Try doing a Google search with 'Verizon' and 'Cogent' for an example of this...)
To sum things up, you can no longer expect to plug something into the Internet and expect it to work automatically. And some of the current issues is going to require a Political solution to fix things...
I totally get where you are coming from, 'but', and I use that word advisedly, people these days expect when they purchase a game, that they can slap the disk in, install it by clicking on a few boxes, login and play it, when people are hit with a launcher that just sits in the corner of the screen saying trying to autoupdate and doing nothing for hours, then they are going to lose interest pretty damn fast, and thats no way to retain paying customers.
Having worked in the field for many years, even my eyes start to glaze over when I am having to run commands from cmd.exe to try and trace where a bottleneck is in a bog standard mmo, when I mess around with high tech video editing software that was ported from a mac to a pc then yes i expect to spend a considerable amount of time ironing out inconsistencies, but we are talking about a game here.
I can only wonder how long blizzard would have lasted if their customer base had to jump through so many hoops to get wow to run.
I just can't help but feel that there should be an easier way to launch sto and i would be surprised if the average mmo player knew what force verify means, let alone comprehend the ramifications of patching and running via a proxy.
Ok, I have given up on windows 7, reverted back to vista and am currently patching the game.... again, but credit where it is due, tech support have got back to me and are being really helpful, so hopefully we can get to the bottom of this problem.
On the plus side, I have just ordered a new top of the range alienware pc, yeah its a bit of a drastic solution, but i am determined i am gonna get sto to run come hell or high water lol.
Vista is up and running after about 200 updates :P i logged in this morning fine, no problems got a romulan to level 10 then started to rubberband and getting constant sever not responding messages, finally give up and exit, and, lo, and behold now i cannot get past the login screen, only way i can is if i use the EU proxy option, but then as soon as I try to log a character in the login server times out...
Any other mmo I run, no problems whatsoever, but sto really doesn't want to work.
Even drinking vast quantities of beer isnt solving this issue

No... I am dead serious... That sometimes (often) helps.
Take a look at the 'Net Test' and 'Trace Route' network diagnostics described in this thread.. http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=225155
... then post some network diagnostic results.
Tracert results, cogentco.com is a bit all over the place, everything else is below 100

Let's hope this isn't another one day crash.
I'm really looking forward to calling virgin tech support tomorrow and trying to find someone who knows what a pathping, tracert or nettest is...
