No - this is not a post about hard points for cannons - rather, enabling 'cannon' 'mounts' (similar to horses in WOW) for STO online.
There are some cannon presidents for horses themselves (indeed William Shatner loved horses so much he got them integrated into startrek 'generations' - this was taken a step further with Picards 4x4 vehicle in the later films.
For really big maps like Nimbus, I would love to have some kind of vehicle to get from A to B (and perhaps it could even result in larger maps unrestricted by footfall)
The first HALO did a great job with the Warthog, showing that vehicle navigation could be quite simple in a ground FPS scenario, and picards 4x4 was pretty much a carbon copy (as silly as it was with picard being a diplomat - not a super hero rambo).
How to people feel about ground vehicles/mounts ? is it a good idea? am I being silly?

And I think you mean 'canon' not 'cannon'. Unless you are wanting a horse with a cannon on it?

how could you possibly
There used to be a picture here, but they changed signatures and I can't be bothered to replace it.
But now we're talking about horses? With cannons? I know they tried mounting machine guns on elephants, horses, and donkeys in WWI and WWII but huh?
As for vehicles, I doubt they would add them until they figure out how to not let players bypass enemy mobs simply by speeding past them.

I for one, would like to cannon our president. I'm surprised no one has done so already.
2) precedent
3) They do have a system for not letting people speed past mobs. see: Neverwinter, which is on the same engine
4) Would be good for a big, specially designed area like Nimbus 3.
Maybe the hoverboards coming his Summer can act as a prototype for this.
A) Would require special maps. (Although I can see existing battlezones and adventure zones -- Nimbus, Deferra, New Romulus, Solonae Sphere, maybe Risa -- supporting this. The comments were made before adventure zones were added.) Though I suppose it could work on more maps with a speed reduction.
C) An exploration revamp might include this.
This would PROBABLY include a category of item that would include horses, sehlats, Klingon monster dogs, and ARGO rover type vehicles. Maybe a Pike hover chair as well.
In my opinion, it would look weird to see everyone on them. I also think magic dismounting in combat like you see in fantasy games wouldn't work here. So I tend to think it would ideally be handled as a special kit type with pros and cons.
When the kit is equipped you're mounted. You'd get special mounted kit modules that tailor to the mount rather than the captain profession. I also tend to think certain weapon types would be disabled, primarily melee weapons (or perhaps their function changes) and hand-held heavy guns and rifles. This would actually work to give pistols more use in the game if only pistols can be used while mounted.
I would probably lean towards allowing them to work on all maps aside from indoor social maps (Qo'noS might be okay but ESD/DS9/Drosana would be out) but you'd only get a speed boost in Adventure Zones/Battle Zones whereas the speed would be no faster than a captain's sprint speed on all other maps and may even be slower on indoor mission maps. (If somebody wants to run Infected on horseback? Eh. It's novel. I can see that, I guess. But it should probably be heavily suboptimal.)
What about bridge officers? Well, I think bridge officers should be using kits on the ground now rather than having trained skills so handling this as a kit with a passive visual handles that fairly well.
I might also lean towards revamping EV suits as kit frames or a second suit that can be swapped out to, ala secondary weapons.
But yes I would love some kind of 'mounts' in the game, even if it was restricted to certain area's. Captains pike's chair bring up hilarious memories from south park - so maybe that would be difficult to integrate... (Beep once if you want help, twice for no... three times of you want to be left alone... no beeps... antisocial!)
Cryptic seem to be so innovative with their other games - I just hope it can filter through to STO.
It kinda looks goofy. But on the other hand, it is handy on getting from one play to another.

Rumor has it - Abraham Lincoln made a precedent by having DHC under his hat. :P
As for mounts - we need to have way bigger maps for that. Nimbus? Nimbus ain't big, I can walk anywhere in less then a minute.
The thing in Trek is - mounts are kinda' obsolete when you have a ship that could transport you anywhere in orbit. I won't dispute that they could be usefull in certain scenarios (when you can't access your ship for ex.), but we really need waaay bigger maps than what we have now to make real use of such craft.
And I sincerely hope that if this ever happens, they'll make some hi-tech mounts like the ARGO and not get some more "brilliant" ideas like riding dinosaurs or nanovs. *shivvers*
Also, it wouldn't feel trek much if we used vehicles.
I don't know, we already have dinos with lasers, why couldn't we have horses with cannons ?
Unfortunately John Wilkes Booth cloak-vaped him from behind with his flanking bonus damage and activated evasive maneuvers to flee the theatre.
As for mounts? I wouldn't mind having a vehicle of some sort to traverse the really big ground maps like New Romulus, Nimbus, or the Voth Battlezone.
But I'm not sure how likely that is going to be unless the enviromental art team develops some really massive maps that would require their use -- and having some kind of atmosphere where transporters are disabled, thus pushing the necessity for vehicles.
But like Risa swimwear or EVA suits, they would be restricted to that particular type of zone. Since we don't want people playing Mario Kart on ESD with their Argos.
Yeah, because Cannon Mounts would burn when they were fired. :P
They used to use horses to move their cannons a couple hundred years ago.
Yeah, because Star Wars doesn't use transporters. in the Trek Universe it would at least make sense.
But Mario Karting vehicles during one of the Racing Events......
