I'd just like to say, for the record, that whoever decided that Surface Tension needed to be played 4 or more times for all the various rewards needs to be shot. Preferably by a cat cannon.
I get that you'd like us to replay missions, but two or three times is ENOUGH. 4 times is just flat out trolling and unacceptable.
Well, it's STO. Ridiculous grinding for stuff you want/need ist pretty much the norm in this game. The Surface Tension rewards are just another bad example of the lack real content in this game. So far the new season has been quite dissapointing. 2 sapce missions and 1 ground mission which are not worth the effort because of almost non existing rewards and the space battlezone for grinding marks and isomorphic injections.
I agree. Entirely.
I have 6 characters, that's 24 play of this mission. It was fun the first 3 times (one per faction). Then it was a chore.
And before someone start with the mandatory "nobody is forcing you to do it", it's a videogame. In a videogame, nobody is forcing anyone to do anything. Not even playing it in the first place.
Oh come on, don't blame Cryptic for your lack of strategic planning. I have 17 characters and no problem. Why? Because each character only gets what he needs. The traits are basically worthless, no need to bother with them. The kit is a piece of TRIBBLE unless you plan to get at least one other part of the set and the console is only useful for phaser/disruptor/photon builds.

I blame cryptic for having to grind a story mission 4 times to have the unique reward.
Story missions are the less fun to grind. I don't mind grinding a queued mission.

Correct.
And given the apparent "all grind, all the time" development direction, the person responsible for the decision you speak of was most likely promoted.
Quite frankly its no worse than Queue missions.
Because you do realise that you can pretty much skip through all the dialogue and cutscenes right?
Not to mention that there are multiple accolades hidden that cannot be obtained in one playthrough.

Not all of them. And whining Koren was already boring the first time

This is true, which is why replaying surface tension is more more pleasant then replaying a step between the starts for the whole set was. That's something I'd appreciate about that mission.
Still the tone of rewards in there are a good intended but extremly poorly executed attempt to make those missions "repeatable content".

It's forced on us. It would be repeatable if we had several path to complete the mission, choices that affect the outcome and stuff like that. But right now, the mission is exactly he same for everyone. The dialogues change if you are romulan/kdf, and you push F somewhere else in the conference room, but other than that, it's the same.

I do not feel it beeing forced on me tbh. My non romulan characters all managed to survive 4 full years without any of the rewards in there. It's something we want not something we have to have.
Also it's luckily not time gated. That means I can do it once in a while whenever I feel like it, and not 20 times within this one month.
So this could be so much worst.
The thing is they do not consider missions repeatable content like battle zones or qed pve events or even pvp.
That means they invest a lot if time/resources into development. Then people play it ones say " good job" and 5 minutes later complain "I have nothing to do"
So they want to give an incentive for replaying. That is a good idea.
The idiocy is: there is not just that one mission. There are for sure arround 100 at this point (counting all faction missions but not foundry missions).
We should have an incentive to replay missions of our choice now and them and be rewarded for that, not to replay one particular mission 20 times in a row.
That can be easily done by adding an adequate amount of marks (choice of marks/fleet marks) and/or dillithium to the missions.
Or by adding a daily mission with dil/mark reward for replaying one mission, may be even a "featured" one (to avoid ppl rerunning spin the wheel 1000 times) or or or.
It's a bad idea to force replayability into one mission.
I think you misunderstand the intention of those rewards.
You are not expected to grind them all out, though you could if you wish to.
They have put several different ones... traits, kits of different color and a console so you can choose and are more likely to find something actually usefull among the choices.
I'm going to stick up for cryptic on this one. My biggest issue with cryptic regarding making us grindthe same thing over and over was when they also limited the time of the event turning it into a must grind for every alt in a short period. For people with jobs and rl that was pretty unreasonable if you were trying to play multiple toons.
On this however...there is no time limit. It may be a lot per toon to do but it can be taken at your own pace with no pressure. This is far more relaxing and respectful of my time as far as I am concerned.

Yeah that's also true. I guess it's just a good topic to blow off steam and vent frustration. :P
But guess what's coming next: a timed grind event for an event exclusive ship. And that's the ONLY content announced so far. Yay for Season 9.......:(
The more I play Season 9 content, the more I feel STO is just more of a job. Grinding away Surface Tension 4 times per character, grinding away for new kits, grinding Undine Marks, all on top of the Dilithium and Fleet Mark grind.
I don't know if Cryptic is doing this intentionally to bore us to death so they can close STO or they have no idea what fun is. Instead of anticipating this new expansion, I actually am dreading it, for who knows what new work they will be making us do.
Yeah, wish I hadn't made multiple toons but now I'm stuck w/'em.
Yeah. I agree, I regret making Romulan Characters and making alts during the age of dryness that was the Atari days. Having all these characters is a major burden nowdays, and makes STO more of a job when you have to repeat the content to keep them up to speed.
This is one reason why I wanted them to implement a system where you share certain things among your multiple characters. Like Accolades and Trophies.
I think you misunderstand the intention of those rewards.

Rules of MMO, when you add unique reward for something, players will want them. Because they are unique.
And I fully understand those rewards. 1missions replayed 4 times is the same content than 4 missions played once, and it's a lot cheaper to make.
When was the last time we had a storyline seasons ? It was before we had 3 episodes in a row to grind for 3-4 unique rewards each.
This is another one of those "There are X number of rewards from this mission but I don't need all x that I will use I need to get them anyway, Cryptic's fault for me replaying something so many times."

Some of the old FEs were worse than that. some had rewards you had to RE-play to get at all because they weren't offered on initial playthrough.
I love s9! It got me to stop spending real money and playing so much. I only play a few hours a week now and started to let my stipend build up. This is a good thing as I was spending all my mad money on this game, now I can buy new shinny physical toys. Like a new BBQ Grill.

You needed to do A Step Between Stars at least 3 times to get the Accolades in there, too. In practice, it could end up being a whole lot more, due to the random nature of the Shutter room vs. the Swarmer room, and how far into the mission that was.
This is an MMO, not a Star Trek episode simulator. That would make for a terrible game.
Some of the old FEs were worse than that. some had rewards you had to RE-play to get at all because they weren't offered on initial playthrough.
Not quite. On a whim, one of my 8 toons did gather up all 4 rewards so I can read their stats. All other 7 toons won't bother since there's no reason to play the FE at all.
I'm just registering that missions shouldn't have 4 disparate rewards like that. It should be limited to three, because I don't want to have to deal with 4 rewards that I might want in some future mission.
IMHO, the space and ground traits shouldn't be separate, they should be packaged together, which would bring Surface Tension down to three replay rewards, which isn't as objectionable as 4 is.

Would you play it a 5th time if they added a cat cannon as a reward?
wouldnt be so bad if you can escape key past all the cut scenes/audio instructions and they dont force the cut scenes on you when a ship arrives or when the next part of the space battle activates. just make the audio announcement and let me keep pew pewing.
also they should fix the npc ships (Voyager etc...) not fighting if you go LD and log back in.

none of my toons has this all done yet.. getting all the swarmers killed in under 1 min? or so is I dont know how it can be done on some toons. and not all of my toons have the hugging shadows room as well...
I thought I'd seen it all, but wow a new low for whining. God forbid you have to play a story mission a few times to collect all of the completely OPTIONAL (heck even worthless) rewards, and now you expect the devs to cater to your obsessive compulsion. I for one like having a carrot that encourages replaying the story missions a few times - besides, the one and done attitude is why we have so few of them now, people do it once and then complain about the lack of 'content'.
I wonder what the OP will think about having to do Assimilation over and over to get a full set of kit modules?

I was specifically talking about the Nanoenergy cell recipes.from "Second Wave". They aren't even listed as a reward in the initial playthough, and can only be obtained in replay.
Overall, the 2800 series had a 3 piece ground set, a 3 piece space set, and 7 other unique rewards(Pistol, Nanoenergy cells, shroud packs, 3 space weapons, JemHadar Boff) that could only be obtained from those missions. If you want all of those rewards then that's 13 mission plays.

You don't have to run assimilation to have your kit modules. Try the exchange, the dil store, the fleet stores (including embassy and spire), undine box and rep.
Otherwise, we all enjoy to have a single mission we have to run 4 time (until we are sick of it). So much better than 4 missions to run once. So much fun ! And so much more content !
Oh wait, it's the same amount of content but cheaper, right ?

Most missions of the 2800 arc only include a choice between 2uniques rewards. You don't have to play them all 13 times or something.
But yeah, said that way it might seems it's a grind, while in fact you do each mission twice and have pretty much everything except for the consumables.

At least now the alts get 100% extra rep once my main gets to T5 and sponsors them.
And if I had only 1 toon, just think of all the money (EC and Zen) I'd have not spent getting this for my Sci toon or that for my Tac toon or ...etc.
Next game I play I'm only making 1 toon! (eh, probably not)
