Lately on the forums there seems to be some confusion on what is a STF. People have been using the term to mean anything in the Queue system these days. That is just plain wrong. STFs or Special Task Force missions are a very select group of missions meant to test players back when they were first brought to the servers. They are
Infected, Cure, Khitomer and Hive. And these mission used to be grueling tests of coordination and stamina between players who used to have to actually physically travel to those locations. Now, having been split up into space and ground portions these events can be completed with great ease but they are still the only STFs we have.
Nothing else in the queue is a STF. The only mission apart from those listed to be considered grueling enough to be a STF was Terradome. If you are a fellow survivor of Terradome then you know why.
So to the forums who will promptly flame this thread or ignore it completely, stop using STF to talk about things like Undine Infiltration or a Fleet Alert or some other breeze mission.

You can say the original stfs were infected, cure and khitomer.
But they still added other stfs since then.
Back then, there was fleet actions 10 or more players
Stfs, the entire universe is at stake and you must thwart the evil aliens
Instances. 5 man group that's all about pew pew.
Now though, it's stfs, episodes and fleet actions
Stfs require 5 people to start
Episodes are designed for soloing
Fleet actions are 10 and up
Cheers...
Terminologies change, need to stay current :P

Then STO went F2P, the missions moved to the queues, and everyone dumbed it down by referring to anything Queued as the STFs, even the old Fleet Actions.
But to me, STFs are still Infected, Cure, and Khitomer, nothing else.
Not really. From a pure game standpoint Infected, Cure, Khitomer Accord and Hive are STFs.
Since they all are apart of the Omega Special Task Force missions.
Course with the exception of Hive this all dates back to when they were all queued from the Omega Leonis block. At the systems.

All of the game then since Star Fleet is a special task force unto itself. And yes I know no one cares. But at least this is not a topic beaten to death here on the forums. You have to give me that much at least.
Infected, Cure, Khitomer Accords, Hive and when it still existed Terradome.
These missions are unique compared to any other missions in the queue, because they are a part of the story-line. They are part of the story and help drive the story forward.
Granted, with splitting the ground and space segments, this is less apparent, but it still is.
Unlike any of the other missions in the queue, these ONLY award STF marks (Omega Marks), also unlike the others, you will need 3 people to get through certain parts of the mission, as they can not be done with less (the consoles in infected, or the "Room" in KAG as obvious examples).
Lots of people unfortunately ignore this fact and make themselves look a little silly by calling everything STF's, because they don't see this.
Fleet Actions:
Breaking the Planet, Crystalline Entity, Big Dig, Starbase 24, Gorn Minefield, Scoutforce.
These missions are special, because they unlike any of the other missions, do not reward marks of any kind.
Instead they reward Gear/dil base on whoever did "best" (read, did most damage). They also kinda fit into the storyline, by an attempt to make them seem as if they were the borderline combat between the factions during the war, although now that the war is over this element has blurred a little.
Fleet Missions / Queued Missions:
The rest of the missions in the queue.
These missions do not really drive the story forward. They are designed to be a break in the regular routine. You queue up, you go in, you get marks for whatever project you need them most for.
Some are limited to only fleet marks and the specific area they are tied to, but more and more offer free choice between fleet marks and rep marks.
It's really sad to see so few people have actually spend time learning the difference, especially since each type is unique, and deserves the players attention as something unique.
Not really if you tlk to the klingon general who is in command of the STF
The STF is charged with defending the Alpha quadrent from any enemy....not just borg
just nitpicking
Saphire.. Science ground......Ko'el Romulan space Tac
Leva........Tactical ground.....Koj Romulan space Eng
JJ-Verse will never be Canon or considered Lore...It will always be JJ-Verse
to me i refer to them as stf in name only to avoid confusion, beyond that however the "true" stf's died at f2p, they used to be almost an hour long storyline arc that tells you the story as the why the borg invaded vega in the first place, being there with your older self a few hours before your younger self arrives, only 1 officer knew of this directly at the vega colony while the chase is on for the borgified donatra, you meet that same officer twice. those were the days! you actually called for a team in chat and that took almost an hour to get together and actual teamwork to pull it off, for infected and cure space, dps wasnt that much of a problem, but QS was more dps focused, at the time it was more critical for players to need more dps to deal with the probes and spheres, 2 to these, while 3 others focused on the gates, one at a time. it was quite common to fail in the first part of that stf with a lack of teamwork, coordination and reasonable attack power. thats what made these stf's great, these stf's sorted out the chaff from the wheat and back then it was a proper challenge with content...
... then the nerf bat hit the stf's when f2p came and the rest is history...
Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
When I say STF I mean the missions labeled STF in the queue (the omega missions) and when others say STF I assume they're meaning the same. If they're misusing the term, its up to them to explain what they really mean. The benefit of using it as a shortcut really suffers when you have to specify what mission you're actually referring to. No point in getting all worked up over it, though.
Quick Play, Join Existing, Create Private...being the three tabs on the PvE Queues window; we can see where this is taking place.
Join Existing and Create Private for the Type column have: Event, Fleet Action, and STF.
Quick Play on the other hand, for Type it simply has: Match takes place in space/Match takes place on ground.
Somebody hitting up Quick Play to queue their PvE...there's no mention of STF or otherwise.
Story wise:
Stf= special task force are missions we take part of as part of the task force omega
'Mechanically: not even those are stfs.
As the op said, stfs were long challenging missions requiring skill, coordination ect. Nothing of that pplies to the current versions any more. Therefore they are not stfs any more.
Entity does reward marks. Nukara and Fleet.
Anyway, personally I don't care what people call STF anymore and what not.
For me, it is the list of Reputation Content that is in 5 man teams.
That would be the Voth, Undine, Borg PvE.
I don't count Romulan or Nukara PvE's somehow. They just feel.... different.

Probably because they don't have elite versions and no way to gain higher mark amounts.
Although for me (beside the fact that I don't call me stfs ) for that very reason entity counts more into that list then the romulan stuff...^^
Right... They changed that with the revamp... Guess it's more of a TRIBBLE son now.
Problem is: They don't... When someone asks me to join a STF and I say yes, and it then turns out to be Azure, I simply leave...
Actually the good thing about the rep revamp es that doing Azure or Vault ensmerald once a day per characters is actually kind of rewarding...
Eheh, so maybe people need to start asking you if you want to join something by it's name: Hive, Breach, Azure, Viscous, etc...
