Imagine...being a veteran, an icon appears asking if you wish to explore a strange new world and it turns out to be a place where you can grind for a ship, build a bonus rep though non marks...an awesome dilithium farm area.
Hiding a grind and say it's exploration won't do the trick.
So I'm sorry, but I don't like it. I like to know everything about my new grind (if it's worth it, what I should expect, which queued event...).
An Exploration system should be completely random. If I am doing exploration missions in STO, then I don't want the exact same experience as everyone else.
It's not a bad idea. That would encourage us to go exploring (something that is desperately needed in DPS Online).
My only complaint is if they use that opportunity to turn it into a grind fest. But if it's random rewards, then I'm all for it.
One day Cryptic will be free from their Perfect World overlord. Until that day comes, they will continue to pamper the whales of this game, and ignore everyone that isn't a whale.
Create a series of small missions tied to a previously mapped but unexplored world, moon or space-drift structure.
Scatter them throughout space.
Wait for us to find them and explore them.
Even better - run the following contest.
---
EXPLORE STRANGE NEW WORLDS
Cryptic has add 12 new worlds and explorable regions, hidden amongst the various areas through the Star Trek Universe. Be amongst the first to find them, and win special prizes and rewards.
Each time you find one of our hidden missions, receive 10 Exploration reputation points and an award of Dilithium.. If you're amongst the first 50 captains during the launch of this promotion, receive a bonus 25 ER.
If you're the first Captain to find the hidden region - you gain 50,000 Dilithium Bonus and NAMING RIGHTS for the star system. Restrictions on the name may apply.
Each explorable region comes with 3 specialized missions that offer unique drops, ER and dilithium bonuses.

I like this alot. Blame me for the concept of Exploration Reputation.

Hmm... it definitely sounds good. But.... I have to wonder how much time it'd take for the devs to code it. Especially if there are "unique" items...
There is already a lot of new content out there that Cryptic doesn't advertise. In fact, their UI hides it. You really have to search for it to discover that it is there. And it's usually a story, not a grind. But all of it is hidden. Maybe you'll find an ad in somebody's sig.

And as soon as it was announced a 50k dilith payout the login server would crash and a 200 page forum rant would ensue. Maybe a 1k payout per planet would be better, though not a bad idea would need a lot of planets though and if you could explore the planets that means a lot of work for little return unless players had to purchase an explorers permit for example.
What if Cryptic released "content," as in newly developed worlds but did not release the information through patch notes or contacts?
Could add the Explorer feeling that so many have been craving...that is until everyone knows about it and the new area gets en masse attention.
Have it be a bonus rep or something "new."
Just an idea
trouble is people wouldnt know the difference and even if they found this content some would be asking if it was a mistake in the coding to release this and such, its not controversial, it would be just confusing.
the team would need to announce something like hints then it would fit the idea.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
Nah, I'm not in favor of the "FIRST" mechanic. That would just create a mad rush and a lot of butthurt people. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, no need to create a few on that scale.
I do think that there should be FE's that are unlocked through various means other than the quest tracker. Say visiting a certain NPC that only appears at a certain time, or randomly in the exploration zones, talking to an NPC with a certain item equipped, unlocked via the Doff system, visiting a certain set of areas in a certain order...
I remember when videogame forums were all about trading secrets, easter eggs, and areas that you've found. What happened to that.
Not sure how good the Foundry tools are, but could have a create a planet foundry contest, top 10 get added into the STO universe with in-game hints on were to go to explore these strange new worlds have it added with the next expansion.
The current exploration needs some big additions and a lot of finetuning but OPs idea is interesting to think about. It fails at the practical application. Unless all this never lands on the test servers. Cryptic is barely able to handle bugs and flawed issues as it is but this sadly(!) has crash & burn written all over it

Last time I checked I would describe them as "annoying & very restrictive". In result I sometimes catch myself in beliving in magic when playing some foundry missions where the authors have made the impossible possible.

That's just one facet if the idea. Way to be one dimensional bro

Thus the "controversial" part of the title...
