Science Ships?

euar0euar0 Member Posts: 68 Arc User
I always considered sci ships to be 3x3 (mostly) ships with sensor analysis and sub-system targetting. This included carriers. Not anymore.

Adapted Tal Shiar Battle Cruiser 4x4 with sensor analysis and 3 of 4 cruiser commands
Odyssey <just the Sci version> 4x4 with sensor analysis and Cruiser commands
Carriers (all) no longer have sensor analysis

What other ships gained or lost abilities as of 9?

Carriers never had sensor analysis. Just subsystem targeting.

Vesta is both a carrier and a strong sci ship, so there goes your "all carriers lost sensor analysis".

Vesta is no more a real carrier than the Galaxy X is with it's one miniship launch ability.

Anyways I'm more interested in why we haven't seen the deflectors.

Can we please stop calling ships like the Vesta or the Armitage or the Galaxy-X carriers?
    Because they're not.
Carriers have a full 2 hangar bays and feature heavy in the Science BOff seats. (the exceptions being the Kar'fi and the Obelisk)

They're probably still populating loot tables with various kinds of deflector types and modifier combinations.
It's not like with cruiser commands; they're creating a whole new category of gear here.

and the http://sto.gamepedia.com/Jem%27Hadar_Dreadnought_Carrier which is tac oriented

Seems like just the half of the carriers (or less) are sci oriented

The ships listed as gaining Sensor Analysis did not gain it. They already had it. The ship types mentioned as losing Sensor Analysis did not lose it. They didn't have it. A ship having a Cmdr Sci BOFF slot doesn't necessarily mean it is a Science Vessel.

    Sensor Analysis
    Subsystem Targeting
    Secondary Deflector (coming)
    A higher base SDR.

Cryptic's already mentioned that Carriers aren't getting Secondary Deflectors, but I bet there are still going to be folks that turn around and ask why...thinking that they are Science Vessels when they are not.

Ah, right. The dreadnought carrier. Which I guess would just be a suped-up battle carrier.

And yeah, carriers seem science-oriented because they were originally billed as very advanced and massive ships, able to coordinate and support not just their own entourage craft but other starships to boot.
This seems to pretty much translate into large bulky craft with significant Science BOff seats, and minor science vessel capabilities (i.e., Subsystem Targeting).
