One of the things I enjoy about STO is just walking around seeing some of the elaborate and interesting looking toons that some (obviously more talented than me, though I try) people expend their time and effort to create. I also enjoy reading most of the profile/background bio info that accompanies so many of these different and diverse characters and that is available by clicking on the 'info' button on their toon "photo". There seems to be some really gifted artists and writers who play this game.
Although I wouldn't want the devs to expend an inordinate amount of time/effort on it (they have more pressing things to do) I would find it convenient to have some way, some flag or tag readily apparent, to indicate whether or not a toon has a bio or not, so I (possibly lazy) don't have to expend effort/time clicking on the one's that don't.
As well, maybe folks might consider posting the best bio they have created or seen. I am quite a sci-fi reader and fan and some of this stuff is really good and should be shared.
I have a few nominations. 1 for the worst bio I've ever seen, 1 for the best written, and 1 for the best there will ever be.
The worst: Grandson of Kirk, and son of Picard through Picard marrying Kirk's daughter and producing the PC. Many often claim lineage from the greats but this one blew me away as just being sad.
The best written. Nikola Tesla. Someone had made a genderbent Nikolai Tesla and actually done the research. This character was Tesla, only thrown forward in time due to a lab accident. It all sounded plausible and was done up in proper written form.
The best ever: The love child of Janeway and Indian Jones. That is all.
Cheers from Antonio Valerio Cortez III, Half-Celestial Archduke of the Free Marches Confederacy.

I kind of forgot about that thread; I should have posted a link to the LC tale "It's Been a Long Road", the backstory for then-Ensign, now-Captain Iain Burwell, formerly of the UESPA Star Fleet, now of the UFP Starfleet. (He had command of the NX-class Icarus back in the 22nd century, for a short time between being ambushed at Gamma Trianguli and being caught in the side-effect of a primordial black hole colliding with a Romulan ship's artificial quantum singularity...)
The Biography space ingame has one huge flaw. Not enough allowed space to go into proper detail. It does drive me a bit crazy....

The player specs Window hadn't worked for me in over a year. Maybe 2. I've given up on bios.
My Old Blog about things that could and should have been added when I wrote it. Not sure what I want to do with it now. I'll just keep it available now that most of it is outdated.
I have a bio which is basically the main character from La Mulana frozen and then unthawed in 2409.
Pretty much everything he has is themed from the game including bosses as ship names, Disruptor space weapons due to his obsession with green, his crew is several of the other characters, and his main ground weapon is an energy whip.
The only thing missing is the lack of Indiana Jones-ish clothing for him. Get on that, Cryptic!
yeah reading the bio's is always interesting, when they work. Unfortunately, 90% of the time, when i open a players info, i see their name, their fleet, and maybe one more piece of info, can't remember what, but the rest is blank. sometimes if i close and re-open the info window several times, it will finally show up, but usually it doesn't.
Here is my bio...what is actually in the game is the where the quotes start and end...the rest is just on our website.

The problem with Bio's is that they're often broken, and you can't see the other players boffs bios often. It was fun to read them when they still worked though.
I don't have the exact specific stories for my 3 toons, but in short it goes something to this effect.
Fed
Human
Federation Ambassador to the Romulan people
Praetor of the Romulan Tal'Shiar
Fed allied Romulan
Alien
Neutral Operative for the Federation, and Romulan Republic
Praetor of the Romulan Tal'Shiar
Fed allied Romulan
Reman
Liberated Operative for the Romulan Republic
Praetor of the Romulan Tal'Shiar
All 3 are under the guise, of a newly established Romulan Tal'Shiar, with the sole purpose of eliminating the old Tal'Shiar, and reestablishing the Intelligence Agency to serve the Republic, and the Romulan people, and not still under the guise of the old Star Empire, or controlled by Empress Sela, and her cronies.

I saw one who was the son of Kirk as "Kirok", from that episode where he loses his memory. Only, in the PC's backstory, he never regained his memory and lived out his life on the planet, and the PC ended up enlisting in Starfleet after a premature First Contact due to a Starfleet ship crashing.
I thought it was pretty creative, myself.
I've never written a character who claims descent from the greats EXCEPT for one of Three's bridge officers, who is a direct descendant of Thy'lek Shran (and 1/128th Aenar as a result).
My Captain has an incredibly boring backstory. Barely made it through starfleet, cheated on her final exam, only got a ship because no one else wanted it.

My Caitian Sci character basically got the "Nickname" Blaze the Cat because she is a bit of a Pyro, and she earned that name in the Academy because one of her friends was familiar with 21st Century gaming history. Doesn't help that she tends to use Exothermic Induction Field in combat either.

if i had the ability for character bio i would of written up a lot of stuff. including as much detail as possible. but as it is you only get a character limit making things very difficult to get it all down.
there is one person in this thread who wrote up a bio about a birth date as unknown and then falls flat by failing it with an age to be exact. how can you have an unknown time line with an exact age? if your not sure then the age is also not sure.

I figure no one reads them (and most of the time, no one can) so just throw things in there for my own amusement.
...now I'm wondering if people are reading the bio and how many typo's I made...
Does anybody remember the day when we could access our character's bios through the website? When Forum-PM and ingame-mail were still linked? Glad that everything is easier and more modern now (and EVERY neat feature there ever was was broken and scrapped)...

I don't like bio that make the PC the descendant of Picard, Kirk or whatever. And I don't like the well known guy falling through a temporal anomaly and being in our timeline. Both time it feel simply wrong. Picard was not related to Kirk, neither was Janeway or Sisko. They made their own story, and didn't need the help of lineage or time travel to become heroes.
But to be honest, they are always funny to read.
You also have the very common "I'm so powerful my bio is classified", or "I saved ESD, Quinn and the president the same day". Always have fun with those.
As for my bio, I'm not working them too much, since pretty much nobody can read them anyway. I know their story and stuff, but I don't write it down. In the current state, it's a waste of time.
Does anybody remember the day when we could access our character's bios through the website? When Forum-PM and ingame-mail were still linked? Glad that everything is easier and more modern now (and EVERY neat feature there ever was was broken and scrapped)...
Knowing Cryptic, they'll put them back once they find a way to monetize it. Pretty much like the gateway (I wouldn't be surprise if they planned to use the gateway to make those features come back).

I've seen some doozies and some good ones, but none really stuck in my head save for a friend of mine with her alien character. Her bio was written as if a crewmember was talking to you about the character, how she is on duty and her strengths as a Captain and fighter ( "I've seen her break her phaser rifle over a klink's head!" ) and how it's odd that her off-hours she's as friendly as can be and is able to out-drink anyone.
I've once been complimented on the bio of one of my characters, who is the adopted brother of my main, who is loosely based on my family.
Kaito (and his twin sister Karen) were adopted by the Kiana family, a family of Eskimos tracing their heritige back through the 21st century, and have had a long history of successful officers in Starfleet. Due to this familial history, Kaito was allowed to enter the Academy early, but an incident utterly ended his future career and guarenteed years of penal colony work.
Just before the teen had resigned himself to being a prisoner for the rest of his early life he was contacted by 'just an interested party' who offered him a way out. Join them and he'd be free and back in Starfleet.
Agreeing without pause he learned his contact is (or at least claims to be) a member of the secretive rogue group, Section 31. Not beliving the claim Kaito was ready to turn himself in to the nearest Starfleet Officer, but before he could he found himself with a ship and full crew, all ready to follow his orders as he gets them from his contacts.
Now with a crew of near criminals, over zealous patriots and secret keepers, Kaito is ready to defend the Federation from threats it doesn't need to know about, using methods they wouldn't want to hear of. He may not be an upstanding Officer of Starfleet like he dreamed, but being a ghost operative for a rogue shadow group is far better than being on a prison planet.
Is it cliche'ed? Oh heck yeah, but I liked it, and at least one other person did.
I can't edit my bio there. Finding others files is annoying (I have to type the name in the address bar, no search function), and the mail is not linked. In fact, there is no mail on the gateway.
Also, I have to check my mail and use a unique code EVERYTIME I use the gateway.
The gateway was a good idea, but it's unfinished, and will never be completed according to recent interviews.
I don't like bio that make the PC the descendant of Picard, Kirk or whatever. And I don't like the well known guy falling through a temporal anomaly and being in our timeline. Closest I ever came to that was with my Romulan, Morgan Thavrau, who is possibly the illegitimate daughter of Senator Merken "It's a faaake" Vreenak. Morgan's mother was a civil servant working as a Senate aide and Morgan basically guessed based on timing. And Mom died during Hobus (old story I'm sure a thousand or more pointy-ears have used), so there's no way for her to find out for certain.
I agree completely. The guys who try to impersonate Picard or whoever with their toons, or who have USS Enterprize or some variation thereof for their ship name, always elicit an eye-roll from me. Get creative, be your own person.

And Mom died during Hobus (old story I'm sure a thousand or more pointy-ears have used), so there's no way for her to find out for certain.
But it's only natural - that's the key event that affects most Romulan lives probably - and it also likely changes the outlook of many people.
T'Nael served as officer in the Romulan Fleet to serve as a Science Officer and help the Romulan Exploration and Colonziation efforts. When the Romulan Empire entered the War against the Dominion, she was transferred to the front, and eventually got her own command. Her ship was destroyed in the Battle for Cardassia, many of her crew were lost, and she herself was severely injured. After her recovery and tired of fighting, she resigned from active duty.
She joined a civil research institute that was developing a new underwater agriculture and biosphere system that was to increase the viable population Romulus could hold. She married and had two children. When the Hobus Supernova hit Romulus, she was off-world, on an interstellar conference on Exobiology. Her company, her family, and even every survivor of her former command, they were all gone. The Empire she had served was in shambles. T'Nael didn't know anymore what to do. Any purpose she had in life, it seemed destroyed. She felt numb, and she wandered aimlessly through the Galaxy. She lived, but not much else. Eventually, she found a few Romulans that had undergone the same, but suggested they'd join one of the new colonies, to build a new life. T'Nael joined them, more out a sense of duty then because she cared or wanted to build a new life.
T'Nael uses neat ship names like "Ruin" or "Ashes"...
But you can of course also have the destruction of Romulus as a minor back story element...
Onatek used to be a miner, working close to the Border of Romulan Space. After the fall of Romulus, the mine was taken over by Orion Syndicate, and Onatek's talent caught the attention of the Orion Woman leading the operation. She convinced Onatek to join her in other criminal enterprises. He left his home colony and travelled the stars, assisting in break-ins, sabotage and counterfeit as required of him, all while he was making money.
One fateful day, he was tasked with sabotaging a freighter craft of a Captain that had refused to pay protection money. He succeeded, and the freighter exploded on atmospheric re-entry in its destination - the explosion caused however a terrible cascade, destroying a mining facility on the planet, and killing hundreds of miners and workers - it was the mining facility he had worked on originally, long having been sold by the Syndicate to a Ferengi entrepeneur. Friends and family members he had known where all dead. Onatek decided to leave the Orion Syndicate - a dangerous prospect, no one leaves the syndicate, after all. He gave most his latinum away to the survivors of the catastrophe, leaving only a rest to conceal his tracks. He decided to hide in a new colony, helping the settlers there to build a new home.

First Omek'ti'kallan is a "work in progress" according to his creator, Odo'ital (or Odo), the famous Founder who fought for the Federation in the Dominion War. What that really means is "abject failure", but Odo's badass girlfriend made him put it in terms that wouldn't have Omek and his fellow experiments killing themselves or something else equally crazy out of religious fundamentalism.
Omek was intended to be one of a new breed of Jem'Hadar genetically predisposed towards atheism; part of Odo's attempts to make the Dominion less openly totalitarian. Unfortunately, the modified Jem'Hadar showed a borderline fanatical devotion to Odo, and a greatly reduced loyalty to other Founders. Neither they nor Odo know how they can tell the difference between Founders; Odo chalked it up to "random factor/Q/I do not know" in his experiment notes, and then tried to find a way to cope with increasingly over-the-top hymns of praise written and sung (poorly) by a bunch of openly, honestly, earnestly believing Jem'Hadar.
So Odo eventually lost it completely and told the experiments to go to the Alpha Quadrant, sign up with various powers there, and find some deities other than him to worship. He regretted it afterwards, but the experimental Jem'Hadar were already on starships headed for the wormhole in a somewhat disturbingly cheerful attempt to please their god.
Omek'ti'kallan and a few others joined up with a group of Romulan refugees in the Tau Dewa sector. While waiting for assignments at the Romulan flotilla, Omek met a Romulan woman who used no fewer than four different aliases within his hearing. Intrigued, he approached her and discovered that the woman, who said that her real name was D'trel, was on a mission of revenge; a Tal Shiar operative who she hated more than anything else in the universe had attacked the colony where she had been hiding out for decades, killing dozens of her neighbors and allowing Elachi troops to abduct dozens more.
Omek offered her his services on the spot, because "Glorious Odo'ital" had said once (after a particularly frustrating day) that certain types of people tended to encounter more varied phenomena than others; Omek decided that he'd be more likely to find more gods to please Odo if he worked with this interesting Romulan.
He hasn't found any deities yet, but he's definitely had a wild ride. As D'trel's first officer and right-hand man, he's personally dealt with situations ranging from Kar'ukan's invasion of Deep Space Nine and the Facility 4028 incident, the Brea system incident (where he helped D'trel's therapist clean the woman up after she brutally killed Hakeev), and the Breen invasion of Defera.
Omek spends much of his time singing or humming out-of-tune hymns to Odo, and heaping almost outlandish praise upon his god. His fellows aboard D'trel's ship, the Vengeance (Rihannsu: IRW Kholhr), themselves a bunch of misfits thrown together by fate, KDF officer exchange programs, and, in the case of Subcommander Zel (a Breen), a political asylum visa, treat Omek like just another member of the crew. They tolerate his infrequent proseltyzation attempts with easy good humor, and even threw him a third-birthday party, complete with a "Baby's First bat'leth" from the Klingon Lieutenant K'rax, which Omek tolerated.
Omek is generally a friendly, good-natured sort, and is fairly outgoing for his species. He gets violently upset when others insult "Glorious Odo'ital, may His name be prais
Kanril Eleya (Bajoran female from Bajor), C.O. USS Andraste
Born in Kendra Province to town maintenance workers, Eleya enlisted in the Bajoran Militia at the earliest legal age and was assigned to the patrol frigate Kira Nerys as an energy weapons crewman. Within a couple of years she made sergeant. One day an Orion vessel ambushed the Kira and boarded them, and Eleya was near-fatally wounded by a knife-wielding Orion matron while defending sickbay. She was awarded the Silver Cross for bravery, and still has occasional nightmares about the events of that night.
When the Militia retired the last of its space forces near the turn of the century Eleya applied and was accepted to Starfleet Academy. After graduation she served two tours on the RSE border, then six months on DS9 as assistant liason officer to the Bajoran Militia. She was then assigned to the USS Kagoshima as second shift weapons officer.
When the Borg attacked Vega Colony*, she ended up inheriting command after the Borg killed or assimilated the Kagoshima's entire command staff, leaving her, only a lieutenant junior grade, the seniormost officer afloat. With the help of Ensign Tesjha "Tess" Phohl, formerly the second shift projectile weapons officer from the USS Khitomer, she got the Kagoshima underway and managed to save several ships.

Brokosh (Lethean male from Erewhon), C.O., IKS HoSbatlh
Born to colonists in the Hromi Cluster, Brokosh recieved a scholarship to the University of Alpha Centauri engineering school. After graduating with a double major in mechanical and chemical engineering, he served as a combat engineer for various private security outfits for several years before going freelance in 2402.
In 2407 Brokosh married his longtime lover Ba'woV of the House of Chel'toK, a minor member of a very minor Klingon house. Upon discovering she was pregnant in 2408** he signed on with the Klingon Defense Force for steadier pay and was assigned to the operations section of the IKS Vomriw. He distinguished himself as an engineer in several sorties against Starfleet and eventually was promoted and transferred to the IKS Sek'lhr to serve as Second Officer. Though loyal to his employers as long as he's paid and his family is cared for, he feels their idea of honor is usually at odds with their actions.

Morgaiah ir-Sheratan t'Thavrau (Romulan female from Sheratan VII), C.O., RRW Tears of Algeron
Born in 2359 on Sheratan VII, Morgaiah "Morgan" Thavrau was the daughter of Iliana Thavrau, an administrative aide employed by the Imperial Senate who worked for a number of influential senators over the course of a forty-four year career. Morgan suspected that one of these senators, likely Merken Vreenak based on timing, was her father, but her mother remained tight-lipped about the matter until her death in the Hobus supernova. She acquired her nickname from Gina Parker, a childhood friend and the daughter of a Federation ambassador.
Morgan graduated from the Romulan Naval Academy in 2382 on science track with specializations in botany and physics, but was swept up in the Romulan Civil War near the end of her first tour of duty on the IRW Albintian. She was taking a watch on the bridge when a ship of the Imperial Romulan State decloaked and attacked. The conn officer was killed and Morgan took the helm, managing to get the ship to safety. It got her noticed and within two years she was the first officer of the Albintian.
Disaster struck in 2387. The Hobus event killed virtually everyone Morgan had ever known, both on Romulus and Sheratan. She was then gravely wounded when the Albintian, escorting the few survivors of the Senate, was disabled by the Narada. The final nail in her career came when she violently rejected the advances of the ship's Tal'Shiar political officer and decided it wasn't safe to stay anymore. During a resupply stop she jumped ship and joined a refugee convoy, eventually ending up on a fleaspeck agri-world called Virinat where she would live for the next twenty-one years under the guise of a simple farmer.

I have my in-game bio posted on that thread. Unfortunately, the in-game bio length is severely limited. I have a much more extensive backstory: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IAHyNur0fRTHNzly7bYlyQAaE0Rl0EmBZOHzbTPegnk/edit?usp=sharing
STO Resources: <Ship Comparison - All Tiers + Small Craft + Hangar Pets> <Damage Resistance>

Knowing Cryptic, they'll put them back once they find a way to monetize it. Pretty much like the gateway (I wouldn't be surprise if they planned to use the gateway to make those features come back).
It's still there. http://gateway.startrekonline.com

I've once been complimented on the bio of one of my characters, who is the adopted brother of my main, who is loosely based on my family.
Is it cliche'ed? Oh heck yeah, but I liked it, and at least one other person did.
Also, I have to check my mail and use a unique code EVERYTIME I use the gateway.
The gateway was a good idea, but it's unfinished, and will never be completed according to recent interviews.
I agree completely. The guys who try to impersonate Picard or whoever with their toons, or who have USS Enterprize or some variation thereof for their ship name, always elicit an eye-roll from me. Get creative, be your own person.

T'Nael uses neat ship names like "Ruin" or "Ashes"...
But you can of course also have the destruction of Romulus as a minor back story element...

* This predates season 8.
** I have absolutely no idea what a half-Lethean, half-Klingon would look like.
