if we have owned a mirror ship, we unlock the mirror skin for other types of that ship class, even if we discard the mirror version, so would it not make sense for us to also unlock the prefixes`
for example, i own the fleet assault cruiser refit, and i have the mirror skin form an old mirror starcruiser, however if i want to use the prefix, i have to pilot the mirror version, and any sensible person can see how it would be absolutely idiotic to replace my fleet ship with a mirror ship, just for the prefix

While true, the point is that your Fleet ship isn't a Mirror Universe ship. Hence it doesn't get the prefix option.
You're just a machine. And machines can be broken.

but why would Starfleet then keep the I.S.S. prefix for theire captured mirror ships? would they not be re-fitted to the U.S.S. standard instead, to fit in with the rest of Starfleet?
seems to me, the fleet ships not having the I.S.S. logo, is hardly a matter of logic, given what i just stated above
I wanted to name my Cell Ship with NX, but it wouldn't let me
Yeah, not ISS, but same idea.
My Old Blog about things that could and should have been added when I wrote it. Not sure what I want to do with it now. I'll just keep it available now that most of it is outdated.

For the cell ship, and for lobi/lockbox ships I always made my own prefix by choosing no prefix then adding my own before the ship name:
For example, I have the T.D.F (Tholian Defense Force) Nukra as a fighter ship
"I am a travelor of both time and space to be where I have been"
I think what we actually need is a way to get Fleet Tier Mirror ships. The ships are mechanically different than their prime counterparts.
Just make it something like 3 Fleet Ship Modules and 20k Fleet Credits for the 10 console versions.
Now... The question there is whether there should be a holding it's attached to.
I would actually support the following:
Introduce Mirror Hathon as a Fleet Holding and establish it as a ship construction facility on Mirror Bajor, in dispute between the Terrans and Klingon-Cardassian Alliance. Our fleet establishes a presence there to create a choke point.
Then have it offer up Fleet tier upgrades to Mirror ships. 4 Fleet Tokens if you don't have the one from the lockbox. 3 if you do. Also Mirror Phasers and Disruptors (reversed procs), Terran traits (the Terran DOffs give clues what these could be) and maybe a tailor unlock like the Intendant's uniform and/or a proper Mirror Odyssey (bare midriff, new belt, epaulets in place of pips, badge on the right side and military ribbons on the right).
Maybe a Mirror 29th century outfit for the Lobi store to go along with the Mirror 29th century ships.

The Imperium agrees
"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."

It would make a lot more sense to have USS for any fed ship (except for the tuffli obviously, and any non military ship).
But the players whined a lot, and they gave up. Now, you can fly an ISS ship, and be part of Starfleet.
At this point they could drop any pretense of realism/canon, drop the prefix and let the player choose.

Why do you assume that other players are part of Starfleet?
Why do you assume that other players are part of Starfleet?
Because they are either part of Starfleet, KDF or RRW. Everything else is personal fantasy, just like I can pretend I'm a cylon or Shepard from ME.
It make little sense to be Terran, and dock on ESD, do the DOFF mission on the academy, have a DOFF roster made of Starfleet officer, and do queued content with your sworn enemies, sometimes against your own.
I have nothing against your own personal fantasy. But trying to involve cryptic in it feels weird.

My DOff roster is made up mostly of Jem'Hadar but there are a few Terrans in there, I think.
Trying to ifer what other people are by UI or knowledge of game mechanics is pretty much metagaming.

i'd say it would make more sense if Starfleet captured a fleet construction yard the Terrans build in OUR universe, after all, Starfleet has no intentions on invading the mirror universe
I'm gonna go with "No, let's not do this. Instead let's leave the Mirror prefixes for Mirror ships, strange as that may be."
And if we insist on going the other way, then throw all the logic out the window at once and let me use the USS prefix on my Klingons' ships and IKS on my Feds' ships. (Makes exactly the same amount of sense, after all.)

right, so what im getting from this is that the mirror ships should NOT have access to the mirror skins, because that makes just as much sense as the KDF having access to FED ship skins, vice versa

What are you babbling incoherently about? Why shouldn't the mirror ships have access to their own mirror skins again?
But no, non-mirror ships really shouldn't have access to the mirror skins when you get right down to it.

im "babbling" about how this has turned into a thread of logic: if a captured mirror assault cruiser was to be re-instated as a standard starfleet operating vessel, they would obviously not allow it to keep it's imperial patterns/colors or prefix, therefor logic dictates that imperial-turned-starfleet ships would NOT be allowed to use the mirror skin

But then by that vile demon "logic," they wouldn't be instated as standard vessels- they'd be experimentals sent out to observe the workings of "the enemy's" hardware, thus it would make perfect sense to leave them as conspicuous as possible.
On the other hand, suddenly painting your own ships to match...not so much. Pretty sure captured MiGs used for testing were painted in US colors, rather than the US suddenly painting all their aircraft like MiGs.
a better question would be, why can't we have a choice of either ISS or USS, if a character identifies with the MU?
Because that's not how the game identifies you.
I know that there are plenty of people who fancy themselves as part of the Mirror Universe, or who use the alien generator to create races like the Jem'hadar in their attempts to role-play in a manner that pleases them.
But that's all that it boils down to: role-play.
In the end, it doesn't matter what you as the player identify yourself as, because the game will always see you for what you actually are.

You're not intended to take how the game identifies you that seriously. From the get-go, devs have said that they want and expect people to take that text lightly and roleplay being freelance captains and time travelers, that not every captain is necessarily literally the one who saved Vega colony unless they opt to believe that.
What happens to you in the missions is only your story if you want it to be.
