HD Graphics

Couldn't see any threads about this so thought i's create one.

Would people like to see a HD Client for STO?

Compared to other games STO seems to be falling behind in the graphics department.

I love the game, enjoy playing it have even put a fair bit of money into the game
it's just starting to look outdated, even with the new look ESD, and all the shiny colored ships
i still think the graphics quality could be improved upon.

What do the rest of you think?

truth is that some mmos have been out a lot longer then sto, and have worse graphics still. besides the dev team has been working on keeping things up-to-date on what they can out of the game engine. all things considered but i wouldnt care for HD graphics, what is there already is enough that im happy with it.

THe graphics are fine. THey look good enough. If they would make HD graphics many players with older PCs could have problems. We already have the lag in the Battlezones and sometimes during Elite Missions. Imagine how that would be if we got HD Graphics.

Not necessarily. They could do as Turbine did with LoTRO, in the days of pay to play not sure what it is like now, and release two clients, the normal one and the HD one and you choose which one to install and use.

However I would sooner they work on sorting out bugs than creating a HD client. Sod that actually I'd sooner they made more ships for KDF and RR than release a HD client.

HD stuff should be the last thing on the devs minds, besides it would mean picking the game engine apart and improving the coding from the groud up to run very high quality textures without impacting too much of computer performance. i doubt the devs have the time or PWE are willing to tell everyone to drop what they are doing and start on a HD project. it could potentially cause more problems when it solves.

The graphics are pretty good already. I don't want the game to advance to a point where low end budget systems like mine can't play the game anymore. So I'm happy with the small improvements rather some huge leap.

I did say I would rather they either released ships for KDF and RR or even work on bugs that going anywhere near releasing a HD client.

What I mentioned was a way to do it without affecting players who could not use it.

wasnt disputing the bugs and other ships, thats why i never stated anything about that bit.

There are a number of textures in the game that really aren't up to par. Look around at the signage in Starfleet Academy, or how low res the interstitial images are when changing map...

I'd love it if the Resolution Scale slider went above 1.0 as well - I know you can manually set it with "/renderscale #.#" but it's not persistent.

Mostly gut issues with HDMI option STO doesn't support that yet I think it would be nice to have it, Not only the screen the sound is lacking to no Dolby Surround but 3D3 audio I think. Take SWTOR for example has that option and it runs great. So I don't understand that STO does not support HDMI ...

HD graphics would mean more people would have to shell out 250 or so for a new card and some more memory...I'm still on a Dell XPS 420 with 4gb ram and a GeForce GTX 760 I can run sto at max setting with no video lag at all...

Higher res stuff in theory is nice. But as things stand they need to fix things first such as the FPS problems people are now having since S9.
If you've come to the forums to complain about the AFK system, it's known to be bugged at the moment.

Unfortunately what your asking isn't even possible.

The game engine with STO is extremely limited and unoptimized and can barely cope with STO's maxed graphics as it is.
The Undine Battlezone is definite proof of that.

I'm running at UltraHD (4K) resolution. Most of the game elements still look very detailed, especially the UI and character detail. There are still some textures (such as wall, floor, console textures) which do look blotchy.

Graphics are really nice for a MMO.
Even Lotro which was really nice when it came out (except for the character appearance, which always sucks) is now real ugly in the lower lvl zone, and just fine in the high level area.

    STO is fine IMO.

I think that's different. They probably never planned to have so many people, with so many pets, shooting at once so many mob in such a large area when they made this game. Thus, they never optimized that.

If you want poorly optimized games, play GTA 4, or TSW/age of conan. Even on a beast config, you'll have fps drop without reasons. And they are several years old games.

Its not just that, but even new locations like ESD is taxing on modern high-spec systems.
This game engine was just not build or designed for this high level of visual quality.

This. The game looks very good all considered. It will never look as good as certain other games, like Battlefield 4, Gran Turismo, Halo and so on. MMO's in general will never look that good, due to the myriad of different machine specs out there, net speed and so on...

If they could even get STO up to HD standards, I bet the game would scream for mercy. The Cryptic Engine (I think that's the name) are sadly not optimized very well, and has enough problems as is, like slow loading textures, missing textures/effects, horrible memory management, the list is a pretty long one.

Also, if they added HD, it would most likely be one launcher only, and that would be the big talking point, namely the ARC launcher.

That would mean as some one stated above, low end and medium end systems owners would very likely need to buy more ram and better graphics cards to even be able to play STO.

So, HD would be a nice option, but I can't see it happening due to the game's engine limitations. It has to remain a pipe dream for now...

    This.
I think the game looks reasonable, but the performance is still abominable especially compared to TOR or TESO. It seems that getting more out of the game engine will be difficult, so they will have to either use what they can do more effectively (i.e. clever mesh/texture techniques etc) or take the engine apart and rebuild it.

I have to say though, IMO many of the ship meshes and textures look worse than those made for bridge commander mods circa 2003!
CG sovereign and ZZ connie refit with dx11 effects, shaders, normal mapping etc? *drool*

Cryptic really needs to fix the global FPS drop that has occurred since the debut of season 9!
    I need a beer.
