Controllers/Joysticks for STO?

mhall85mhall85 Member Posts: 2,852 Arc User1
I've seen some threads on this subject (sort of), but I was curious as to any recommendations on controllers, joysticks, or even a gaming mouse?

I'm on a Mac. Logitech says that "most" of their gaming stuff works on Mac... and I'm annoyed by simply using the keyboard and mouse (or, in my case, Apple's trackpad).

I get that Xbox-style controllers aren't really conducive to STO... but, again, any thoughts on good joysticks or gaming mice? Thanks!

(And, please... no Apple bashing. :P )

I have almost always gone with Logitech for keyboards and mice. The mouse I am using is a Logitech MX518 gaming mouse, which I bought in 2005 IIRC, and it still works just as well as the day I got it.

If you really want to use a gamepad, I think the Xbox 360 controller is pretty solid. Logitech also makes some decent gamepads.

For flightsticks, I've happily used Logitech's "Wingman" line for many years without complaint. There are better and more expensive sticks by Thrustmaster and CH, but I can't justify getting one just for my nostalgic Wing Commander/X-Wing/TIE Fighter fixes.

Thanks! I think I am down to either getting a joystick or gaming mouse... joystick would likely be cheaper, too.

After everything I've read and heard, it just sounds like using an Xbox-style gamepad won't work well for this game's setup, especially on ground missions. At least with a joystick, I can use the stick to navigate in space and on ground, bind the buttons for quick access to basic functions... and still have one hand free for mouse control and numpad use

I just hate flying & walking with the keyboard, and constantly pounding on the space bar to fire weapons (no, I don't use auto-fire). :-/

You should be able to get a good gaming mouse for $50 or less. That is what I paid back when I bought mine, though you'll be able to get a better/newer model for that price now.

My Xbox 360 controller was also the same price, but with the new consoles out now you can get one for less. The main drawback that I see with using a gamepad for STO is the limited number of buttons and/or if you use first person shooter mode in ground combat, turning/aiming will be slower and less precise. If you are only going to use it for navigation along with a mouse it could be OK, but it might feel a little awkward.

Another possibility that I forgot to mention is using a semi-keyboard style game controller. I have an old Saitek Pro Gamer Command Unit which is essentially a small, partial keyboard with an analogue thumbstick. It's been discontinued, however a couple of other companies like Belkin and Razer also make similar products.
