How effective would an away team with lirpas or batleths make out?
They do very well them. NPC Away Teams are slower to hit. The Lunge Skill is a good addition to a Melee Unit. Strength Augmenting Armor and a Race with enhanced physical damage like the Androids and Vulcans do even better. The Borg cannot adapt to them, they do comparable damage to ranged weapons, and they have an 80% shield bypass.
I ~think~ Tacs get a bonus to Melee also. I heard that, but I can't confirm it.
Very efficient. :D
Just snuggle the Borg with melee and they die quick.
[10:20] Your Lunge deals 4798 (2580) Physical Damage(Critical) to Tosk of Borg.

I've done Assimilation on Elite with 3 Klingons using Bat'leths, 1 Orion with a Nausicaan Tegolar Sword, and my own character with the Nukara lightsaber. I also sometimes swap out the Orion with Duran'Duran, my Jem'hadar Tac (and his endless supply of the White).
Even my non-Lunge Klingon Engineer and Alien (with Teamwork trait, restyled as Klingon) Science BOFF ran up and chopped Borg with Bat'leths.
Tac BOFFs are just a little better at it due to Lunge being able to cut the distance really quickly.
I have full KHG & Omega sets for all my BOFFs (with instant remods), so it's not like I need to go melee because of the annoying standard remodulators.
one handed unless they drop the weapons.
on easy, sure, a melee team would be effective at dropping the borg, but normal or hard you want ranged high damage per shot weapons.
Nope. Melee is god-tier at dropping borg, even on elite. The sword is the best, I've found, but you can even punch them if you want. Borg go into melee mode when you get in close, so they're not shooting all their TRIBBLE at you. Sometimes they'll try to assimilate you though. But that's rarely an issue, and it's pretty much the same if you're using pulsewaves anyways.

Current mission 'Assimilation' can be done on Elite, with just the Captain doing the kicking/meleeing and BOFF's just following around, with disabled attacks. Well.. the old one was like that too, it was in fact, very entertaining, but the way they made the mission easy now makes me want to cry myself to my sleep...

Melee weapons are great against Borg in player hands, but your BOFFs are less skilled at using them--they tend not to pursue enemies more than a certain distance outside of melee range, whereas when given a long-range weapon such as a Sniper Rifle, they will engage at up to the Sniper Rifle's primary-attack range limit of forty meters. You will sometimes have to manually order your BOFFs to get close enough to the enemy to engage the enemy, or else wait for the enemy to come to them.
