I know it ain't possible yet and I heard Gekko say they want the First Officer System added soon.
I wish they did so you don't have to go thru all the stuff again with a char just get your first officer change places with him so you can go from Tac to Eng or visa versa or be a SCI if you want that.
But isn't it simpler to just make a system so you can buy a career change from the C-store. I do believe that would be awesome to just buy a token and you can change careers on the same account that would be nice don't you think ?
Just put your opinion down here !!!

Isn't the "first officer system" a relic from three years ago when somebody just casually said "it might be cool, we'll take a look at it sometime"?

Last episode of stoked Gekko said he want to get this system because he believes it's needed...
if i recall, it might be hard to properly implement because it was originally tied to the Department heads and DOFF system.
though i dont think the OP quiet Realizes what this system entails. in it's original intention, it turns your first officer into a captain, promoting him from the command of the character they served under. thus he/she is a completely separate character, with his own command and all that, no longer linked in anyway to the captain he was promoted from. so you cant switch between the first officer and captain. (It was basically a way to skip the early content for alts.)
now, if they changed from this idea, i do not know, but that was the original concept for the idea.

Ok I thought you would change to your first officer and your old char would go on pension or something.

I agree with I wish they come with system to just change without losing anything or starting over or level up char or better yet have the other two on your ship and.
Yes I mean it can't be that hard to make a career switch button and sell it to the people, I mean in real life you switch careers, only boring people work for the same boss 60 or 70 years...

however, the flipside is, they would have to code in a way to replace all your abilities with the other careers. in STO this is kind of hard since they are given automatically, unlike most MMOs where you get the abilities via trainer, or selecting them as you level up, since it's automatic, ie scripted to trigger hwen reaching certain levels, makes it harder to alter the code to allow a swap.

It's not the reason.:)
Your character is stored in a database with characteristics (in DBs they're called "keys").
There are keys that depend on others, that's how most DBs I've seen are set up.
Your faction, species and career are the most sensible candidates for these keys that can't be altered.
To change those would mean the characteristics that depend on them are suddenly invalid and...well your character is suddenly broken. So for reasons of integrity some important keys can't be changed.
Until Cryptic has found a way to change these keys whithout breaking your character, changing species or career is just impossible.

Ideally, I think, it would be an alternate ground character - whenever you beam down to a ground map (including social zones, would be my random hope), you could choose to play as your captain or first officer. This would effectively mean you have to fully equip two characters with kit skills, armor, weapons... it seems like the thing Cryptic would like, since it means spending more time ingame. Additionally, it has the advantage of still being the same "character" - you'd still have all your accolades and titles and reputation progress. Let's face it, this game is not very alt-friendly. All the best ships and gear are character-bound, as is everything tied to reputations. And it wouldn't entirely discourage creating a new full character, because you wouldn't have access to the first officer in space, so you wouldn't have the captain skills.
That's kind of a raw idea, but it's how I'd like it done, I think. Plus, it might help sell the Aenar/Caitian/etc. bridge officers in the store.
This was something that someone hinted at in another thread ...
How about, rather than changing careers, which would require quite a bit of work, not to mention a loss of revenue for Cryptic from Alt-Aholics, but an improvement on the First Officer System.
So you a stuck with your original choice and the Captains Only Abilities they offer ...
Unlike now, where your FO is just an icon in the DoFF menu, and maybe an ani, mated head in some dialogues, How about being able to promote ONE and only ONE of your BOFF's to First Officer, and depending THEIR career, you get to choose 1 or 2 Captain Only Abilities from another career?
So a Sci or Engi, could pick a Tac BoFF (Flores anyone?) and access to APA or TI?

Yeah, yeah he hinted it was possible to change your captains name, so why not change careers like that as well, it has never been answered by Devs so nobody knows but they all like to have this option, I wonder what loss they would have because leveling a char and do rep they won't get much money from that. I see it as a plus because they can sell more ships this way...
And when you change career or species all lockbox items or any other item for that matter will be lost in the process, so thats also good for them because people will buy new boxes again and other stuff.
Also you will loose all rep progress all stuff ... you have to start from scratch !!

I can see it now. Millions of Tovans running around...
Everywhere I look, people are screaming about how bad Cryptic is.
What's my position?
That people should know what they're screaming about!

Put your money where your mouth is, and write the code yourself. It can't be that hard, right? Let us know when you get that easy little task done.

I'm still waiting on the race change. Perhaps one day we'll get those AAA game standards in this title.
A career change would be interesting too, not as much as race change though, IMO.
I'd pay for both anyway.
