I have a friend whom Id really love to play this game with and we are still trying to figure out how to use the program called Pinnacle, but the program is so confusing that I cant make heads or tails of it. It certainly doesnt help that I have little to no experience using a controller to play a computer game as I MUCH prefer the keyboard, but he doesnt like using Keyboards so could anyone PLEASE help me? I need a simple, easy to use, easy to understand program that can easily allow him to play the game with a controller. Im betting he could figure out Pinnacle but I would like it if we had something that is by far much MUCH easier to user in regards to playing the game with a remote control.
So anything any of you can tell me please let me know, I really wanna start playing this game with him.
Edit: The problem I have with Pinnacle is there was already a preset profile for Star Trek Online...I looked at the control scheme and tried to use it, but it wasnt working, even made sure the program was loaded but still wouldnt work, I couldnt control my starship. So I would really REALLY appreciate it if anyone could point me to something much better or help me figure out whats wrong so I can tell my friend.
the game has some support built in you can control the ship loot and fire with a 360 remote. as for ability you still need to the the mouse or keyboard.
First, you will need to go into options, if you haven't done so already, and select controller where you get to choose between joystick and controller. Though, I did have problems getting that program (Pinnacle and the Padder one) to work properly.
However, if you would like to know how to setup the controller, it can be done in the chat box in-game. Doing this, you can set each button up however you wish.
To do this, you will need the designation for each of the buttons. They are as follows.
joy1 = start
joy2 = back
joy3 = left stick
joy4 = right stick
joy5 = left bumper
joy6 = right bumper
joy7 = left trigger
joy8 = right trigger
joy9 = A button
joy10 = B button
joy11 = X button
joy12 = Y button
joypad_left = Left on the D-Pad
joypad_up = Up on D-Pad
joypad_right = Right on D-Pad
joypad_down = Down on D-Pad
To find out what command you want that button to activate, you can look at your keybinds in the options menu. If you hold your curser over the command, it will pop up a small window that has the command that needs to be typed into the chat box. You just need to type this in front of it: /bind (then the button designation) (then the command)
Here is an example:
If you will like to have the first skill in the first tray set to the "A" button, then you will scroll down the list in the keybinds. Look for the one that activates the first skill in tray 1, row 1. As you hold the curser over it, the pop up window will show this (/+stotrayexecbytray 0 0) only without the ().
Now, for this example we are using the "A" button on the controller for it. This means that you will type in the chat box in the game this command: /bind joy9 "+stotrayexecbytray 0 0"
The "" are needed. However, this will tell it to bind the "A" button (designation joy9) to the command that is in the "".
If you want to activate more than one skill with a single button, then you will just put $$ between the commands. This example will show us using the "A" button to activate the first and second skill in the first tray.
/bind joy9 "+stotrayexecbytray 0 0 $$ +stotrayexecbytray 0 1"
The $$ is what will link both skills to the same button.
If you will like to have two buttons to activate one command, then you just place a + sign between them with no spaces. Using the first example, this is what it will look like if you wanted the "A" and "B" buttons to activate the skill:
/bind joy9+joy10 "+stotrayexecbytray 0 0"
By using the keybinds tab in the options, you can set the controller up to activate any of the commands in there, and with any combination you wish. For example, I have the back button set to open the map, and the start button to open the options menu.
I hope this helps clear it up some.

yea its a bit complex but if you dig around the forums you can find prefab config files people made for the 360 remote for sto. by default it does what i said without doing anything other then turning it on in options/

Actually, it isn't as complex as it seems, once you understand how to do it. It just takes a little time. However, you are right about there being some prefab config files, and if they don't work exactly like you prefer, some of the work is done for you to save some time. The only thing about those is if you don't take the time to figure out how to do it yourself, you are stuck playing with the configuration you download.
Since it is easy to do once you understand how, I suggest that anyone that wants to use a controller learns how to do the keybinds. Then, any of the pre-made keybinds can be adapted to how you personally are comfortable playing.
If anyone has any questions about setting up a 360 controller for STO, just send me a mail through the forums, and I will be more than happy to help out.

Dpad Up - Increase speed (works in 1/4 increments, so it's like reverse/stop/quarter impulse/half impulse/three quarters/full impulse.
Dpad Down - decrease speed
Been using this configuration, with slight changes, ever since City of Villains. Just always seemed really intuitive and easy to remember after playing other games.

Otherwise it will be just to confusing.
My keybinds -
Ground:
Left stick - movement, inverted Y axis.
Right stick - camera, also turning (left stick sidesteps, without turning the character).
A - Jump
First/bottom power tray - X/Y/B/right shoulder/left trigger/right trigger/select/start/Dpad up/Dpad down
Second/middle power tray - Dpad left/Dpad right/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/0
Third/top power tray - (basically F1 to F10)
L3 - next enemy
R3 - nearest enemy
I think at some point the left shoulder button was doing some strange things on the ground, so I dropped it.
Space:
Left stick - banking and pitching the ship
Right stick - camera
A - fire all weapons
Start - scan
Spacebar - full impulse/slipstream
First/bottom power tray - X/Y/B/left shoulder/right shoulder/left trigger/right trigger/Dpad left/Dpad right/select
Second/middle power tray - 1 to 10 on keyboard
Third/top power tray - F1 to F10
L3 - next enemy
R3 - nearest enemy
Dpad Up - Increase speed (works in 1/4 increments, so it's like reverse/stop/quarter impulse/half impulse/three quarters/full impulse.
