Fleet Vs Rep Gear

Hello!
I tried a quick search but nothing relevant came out.

Even though I play this game from an amount of time that could make you think I've learned almost everything, the sad truth is that I'm still a noob :)

I only recently joined a fleet and I saw there are many nice things to buy: warp cores, ground weapons, everything one could want; I then started thinking, what should I grind for if I want the best gear possibile?
Is it better to grind for these powerful tools or are rep sets better?

I'm genuinly ignorant about that :)

    Basically: it depends.

While I'd say that in general, good Fleet gear beats Reputation gear, this may not always be the case, depending on Your build. You will have to take a look for Yourself at Your Fleet starbase, Embassy, Mine and Spire and the different Reputation rewards, for example the Advanced Fleet weapons may be better for most builds than those available through the Reputation system or the Elite Fleet weapons. Elite Fleet shields with [Adapt] and [ResB] are very, very good shields for most of the PvE content but some players prefer the traits of Reputation shields or aim for specific set bonuses. I find myself combining Fleet and Reputation gear on most of my ships. So again, it will depend on Your build.

Fleet gear does come without set bonuses, though.

If you have access to MKXII reputation SETS (not gear alone) they are better than fleet items. But if you just need alone items, lets say a MKII shield, the fleet gear is better. Lets say reputation items are good when you use em in conjunction, mostly. The fleet resilient shield is the best shield of the game, even better than maco, but the maco can be used as a part of a set, and it gives you advangajes. In the end, it is a bit tricky.

Fleet gear has no set bonuses because the bonuses are part of the elite equipment themselves.

Rep gear is usually the best weapon against one and only one enemy, so if you're only going to do voth/undine/borg content? take weapons with bonus damage against them, otherwise look towards fleet gear it's far more flexible

I agree with this statement 100%.

I'd also like to add that Rep gear can also be seen as a status symbol - the stuff just *looks* good on a ship or character. It says, "I've done this".

Set bonuses aside, I'd say fleet gear is more than fine for PvE. When my Romulan got to max level, I completely ignored the rep stuff and went straight for fleet gear. It's more than enough to make sure you can shred anything PvE with ease.

As someone who turns off the rep visuals because they annoy me I almost spit out my tea this morning at that XD I find the elite phaser sniper a better status symbol anyway ;)

Well another thing if you're not in a fleet to begin with, rep gear is the way to go.

I have seven toons, three in fleets and four not in fleets.
If I ever decide to really make those last four into competitive players, I won't go the fleet route; it's been too much of a time suck for me.
At that point, I'll do Romulan rep for the plasma weapons with disruptor procs (those are great weapons), the console/torp/beam array 3 pc set, and then do Omega rep for a nice space set plus Borg console and Kinetic beam. I think I could be very happy being "no fleet lazy" like that.

I have to agree that "it depends".

I tend to use Plasma weapons because of the Embassy science consoles which boost Plasma, and I think Plasma is a good example of Rep vs Fleet.

Fleet Plasma weapons deal more damage than Romulan Plasma weapons, but Rom Plasma has the Disruptor proc. So on my DHC/turret ships I prefer Fleet DHCs (for more damage) and Rom Plasma turrets (giving up a minimal amount of damage to get the Disruptor proc). On a beamboat, I'd prefer mostly Fleet for more damage (with the Rep array and maybe an extra Rom array), but on a carrier I run Rom Plasma exclusively so I can debuff for my hangers.

I guess my answer can be refined as "get access to both if you really want to min/max". :P

Now there are some items that are currently only available through Fleets, such as 'Elite' level Kits... (we still has to see what the 8472 Rep offers...) and BOs. And the selection of DOffs from Fleet sources is much greater then what you can currently get through Rep....

And then there's those Ships from the Fleet Shipyard. The only Ships that can compete against those 10 console Fleet Ships are either from the Lock Boxes (e.g. Cardassian Galor, Ferengi D'Kora) or from the Lobi Store...

I usually use fleet elite weapons, fleet elite cores, and rep sets for engines and deflectors.

Shields are a "depends" thing. Either a set shield or a fleet elite ResB shield is good.
Let us wear Swimsuits on Foundry maps or bridges please! I would pay zen for that.

¿? well, even white mk XI gear is just fine for pve lol. And since pvp is non existent in this game, well you have the answer.

People gather reputation items mostly because of the visual appearance and other things, but not because they will own in pve with em lol. Thats stupid to think. As i said, even with white uncommon mkXI items you can own in pve with ease. HEll, even in elite stfs. Stop trying to make people to think they "need" the best items to play the game, seriously... this is the reason we keep getting power creep and reputations and everything else.

In the end, is the same strategy, cryptic keep releasing awesome items that in the end, they are not more useful than the old ones. Im pretty sure you can kill millions of undine without the reputation items. Im pretty sure 200%. Same happened with the Voth, the Borg and everything else. Now, that you want the best of the best, thats your problem but it is a problem that is making the game going down in a hyper speed.

The one thing not to forget iare Fleet Consoles!

The Dilithium Mine, Fleet Embassy and Fleet Spire all have unique Console variants that offer some of the best combinations you could want.

Neutronium Alloy Engineering Consoles for instance that also boost your Power Transfer Rate/Hull Heals/HullHP/Turn Rate

Consoles like Field Emitters or Power Insulators that also add a Critical Hit or Critical Damage bonus to all your weapons

Tactical Consoles, that add the the Plasma Weapon proc to all your weapons regardless of their energy type.
Oh, hoho hohhhhh, Oh,, hoho, hohhhhh

True enough. I was trying to point out though that between the two, fleet stuff is usually easier to get at faster. You join a fleet that already has T5 stuff, sink some basic grinds over a few days to earn up a few hundred thousand fleet credits, and you've got awesome stuff. It doesn't matter how many charaacters you have, want, or plan on making. Joining a fleet means you have access to what that fleet has unlocked and most fleets are off to a very good start, if not finished. The Rep stuff requires each character to complete it and that isn't a quick process.

@cookiecrock - Well said. That's exactly how I did it, so I avoided the whole Rep "grind" for tier-then-gear.
