Considering a newer player is more likely to spend more money to get nice shiny ships and most Online MMO's are following this trend, yes to both.

Players are very vocal on the forums (which is just the most passionate minority of players), but they never do anything. Just some empty threats.
Say no to steam mandatory for HL2, boycott call of duty, say no to pay 2 win in BF heroes, say no to STO lockbox/lobi store...
And a few months later, it's a huge success and the people that complained are there playing.
Complain as much as you want, we all know it's empty threats. Sure a few people will stop playing, but a dozen or so is nothing. Sure, we'll have people that will say their fleet is suddenly empty, just like their friendlist, and the game is dying. Just like we had for the past years, and yet the game have more players now than ever.

No and yes.
They are making the right sort of noises to attract players, however retaining them is another matter.
And given that todays new players are tomorrows veterans, some may see how vets are getting treated now and not feel like they are going to be welcome in a few months.

This is a stupid question. New players will always be atracted since they dont have a clue whats going on lol. Not until they keep playing for a few months.
Compared to last year they've added new ships, a new featured episode with great voice work that tells a fun, somewhat epic story, they've progressed to a new year, they've also opened up a lot of customization options.
I think they have a plan for attracting new customers and retaining old ones.
I see the same 'haters' posting in this thread that I've seen posted in all the negative threads over the last couple of days; not to mention they're generally the same haters that have been posting their dislike of STO for months on end. If this 'terrible' season hasn't chased the haters away what makes anyone think it's going to chase the medium group who don't love it or hate it away?
Talk's cheap. Haters can hate all they want on the forum but they're always still here. Still playing; still posting. If the ones who hate it don't have the stones to walk away I don't see why they'd think anyone else will walk away. In the end it's just more cheeze and whine from people who don't get what they want.

The question is irrelevant. Star Trek already has its niche audience, so they really don't need to stretch too far to promote this game. Of course they're trying to appeal to the gear grinders everywhere for transient money (like Las Vegas), but the Trek audience is more than big enough to theoretically maintain this game.
As far as keeping players, obviously they want to. They wouldn't add new content and pay-to-win stuff and such if they didn't. The money grubbing thing is a major turn off for many, so it's hard to say if they're ACTUALLY keeping the majority of their players.
I abstain my vote.
My Old Blog about things that could and should have been added when I wrote it. Not sure what I want to do with it now. I'll just keep it available now that most of it is outdated.

On the other hand, disappointment and frustration about power creep, and how pathetically easy everything is becoming, would go on and on and on.
So I say 'yes'; chances are this will help keep players. And the new shininess will help bring them in in the first place I guess.
So NO and NO

I see the work they are doing for the former, not so much for the latter.
Perhaps some veterans, in the sense they like what they see, but not as a class.

Keep players? No.
Get new players? No. Because in order to get to the Season 9 stuff, you've still got to deal with the rest of the game.
I don't think that'll change the number of new players. If they're going to play, it won't be because of Season 9.
If existing players stop playing, however, it certainly could be because of season 9.
