Which type of shuttle: One you fly yourself, one then launches from your ship or a novelty pet that tags along but effect do anything?
The first one you fly it like a little ship, selected as the active ship, you can do that in the area you buy/requisition ships and then beam up and fly.
The shuttle come equipped with special shuttle gear that can be switched for normal stuff thats a bit better, however you don't get full starship shields on a shuttle, the game lowers the shield total. End game players stick spare high end stuff on their shuttles, in part to make them look cool.
The type second launches from hangars and attacks bad guys with some degree of control from the carrier.
The non-combat pet ones I never used despite having.
Currently there are 2 any faction missions that you use your shuttle, The Vault and Jem'hadar one. Romulans also have 1 defending a colony. There is also 2 stf que missions that use them. The kdf have a stolen fed shuttle mission. Lastly some PvP which I haven't done.
Shuttle system in my opinion is really dumb, and the play-style when you are in a shuttle is horrible, one of the reasons only a bunch of people plays with shuttles. They are just something that you have there, to do some story missions and thats all. Dont worry about it, since its probably that you will only use it in those couple of missions and thats it.
