I hope they fix it in the future. Yes, I think they made it worse. At least I could type in a word and get some kind of results in the search to find something. Now I can type the whole name of the item and it still won't bring it up on some items.

I had the same problem today searching for Fed colonists. There is an option to display only usable items, but it works by just removing the unusable items from the first 400 items it lists. In this case, it showed the 2 *only two* Fed colonists that were listed in the first 400 results. That means out of the 400 cheapest colonists on the exchange, 398 are Klingon.
What I would like to see it do, is if you are searching for only usable results, it should actually show 400 usable results, not just remove the wrong ones from the same exact search pool as it would normally use.
Lately this has been happening to me;
Let's say I have blue quality armor to sell. I go to the exchange to match prices (I usually sell slightly lower than the cheapest item to ensure greater chance of it getting sold) and no search results for Polyalloy Weave armor with CritD and RegHp (just an example, not a real life situation I'm describing). No matches come up, so I take off the RegHp and change the quality filter to "Rare". Still no matches. So I change the filter back to "all" and results come up with blue quality armor with only one different mods, like CritD and PolAp.
It didn't do that before. The filter would find the next best armor with the mod listed.
Is it just me, or has it changed so you have to be precise when searching for something?

Yes the exchange is a total mess. I don't think that it ever worked perfectly but it gets worse with every attempt to fix it. Searching for a Boff or a Doff with specific traits it is very annoying. The search function is bugged. Buying a key for example erases the entire search list and the search categories are just plain stupid. The exchange is in desperate need of some fixing.
The usable only option doesn't seem to work. Everything is still there. But I think this is besides the point. Why the hell are there doffs and boffs from different factions in the exchange in the first place? How does a fed character even get a hold of a Klingon aligned boff/doff. It doesn't make any sense. And even worse, why are you allowed to sell them once the exchange at all? New players will have no idea that they may not be able to use the officers they buy. I discovered this at the cost of a few hundred thousand ec a while back. It didn't even occur to me that you could sell unusable officers. This needs to be corrected.
I remember them at some point saying that the code for the exchange was a tangled mess that would take a lot of time and effort to sort out and improve on.
I take that to mean that they won't mess with it, so long as nothing breaks too terribly. There's no money in it for them to put forth the effort, so they won't.

Quiet you! Most of those are useful. The problem is there needs to be MORE options, like wildcard and boolean search and searching by [mod] and traits and passives and etc.
Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.
I'd really like to see a reset button added. I don't like if I'm specifically looking for a admiral level purple. But then want to search for a doff, I have to manually go into those drop downs and change them back to no filter.

That is not an excuse. Something like a proper organisation and user interface, especially if you work with customers, is essentially.
There should have been a proper Exchange right from the beginning.
It would be nice to search for Doffs with a traits filter.
For example, if I need an adviser with a telepathic ability for a certain mission, I would like to just do a filter on that ability. Or perhaps I want to only search for security officers that do not have the unruly trait...

Though on the other things I agree it would be nice to be able to search by abilities, traits and so on.
Well, "usable": I can use some only for DOff Assignments, but a lot of times i can use the most, even enemy-faction, for Fleet Holdings.
And via this way the display often is bugged. All the results vanish, so you still can't buy anything you maybe want at the moment.
They removed search functions like show newly listed items and other search by time functions that many of us used and enjoyed.
The search by usable button only seems to work for buying Duty Officers and nothing else it seems.
I would love if Cryptic would add the ability for users to search by gender, faction and needed skills for Bridge Officers.
I'd also like to see the return of the ability for users to be able to search for newly listed items no matter what prices they listed at.

Very true
funny thing is, this is an issue people have been talking about since launch..

Ascending price per unit is very useful.

I guess it's too much to ask...
