STO on Steam initial spawn issue

there has been an issue with the Steam version of STO for about two months or so that causes enormous lag for a couple of minutes after initial character seletion after logging into the game.

I know it is not my game files, because I copied the the contents of c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\star trek onlne\Star Trek Online\ to C:\Program Files (x86)\Perfect World Entertainment\Star Trek Online_en\Star Trek Online after I installed ARC, and the issue does not occur when using the ARC client to run the game.

during the minute or so of lag, I managed to type in /netgraph 1 and pings as high as 10,000 were being shown. this is certainly not normal. after the game unfreezes normal pings of 100 or less occur. under the ARC client, the pings are 100 or less also. I have tried verifying the steam version of STO by using both steams verify cache, and using the launchers verify files option.

anyone know how if there is a solution to this as I would prefer to use the Steam version of STO and not the ARC version

I use the steam version and never had this issue...
You can launch the client without Steam, just make a shortcut to the executable in the game directory. The Steam overlay won't work but the rest will. See if launching directly from there fixes the lag for you.

the problem is not with the launcher. It loads up just fine. it is only after selecting the toon and you spawn into STO universe for the first time. the game seemingly freezes up for 3 - 5 minutes. I can painfully slowly type in /netgraph 1 into the game and it shows extremely high pings upwards into the 10k. range. after a few minutes, the game unfreezes and I am unable to move around freely. oddly, while the game is frozen, the sound still plays lik normal. you can hear other players flying by (in space). but the game video, and the games UI react with painful slowness.

I did try your suggestion, and the stall did not occur when running the game and the stall did not occur. I was thinking that there was an issue with the steam version of gameclient.exe. but since gameclient, exe is able to load with out either throwing a steam not running error or causing steam to load first, it must be something with either the steam 'hooks' in either the game or the steam api. maybe it is both. I don't really know enough for to know for sure. All I have are educated guesses.
running the game directly from the steamapps folder is dumb imho, because you lose all steam functions (i.e. steam in-game interface). I have the steam version or a reason, and I utilize the steam ingame interface all the time, even in STO. if I'm going to have to run the game with out the steam interface, I might as well just uninstall the steam version and download the regular launcher or use the ARC version.

I just tried running the game via the Steam beta client both with and without the steam overlay enabled and I tried the regular Steam client with and with out the steam overlay enabled. the freezing after character selection occurred all four times. it seems that this may be a steam issue, and not an STO issue. although the DEV's should still check the 'hooks' in the code of gameclient.exe that allow for Steam compatibility

it looks like the issue has now been solved. either by valve, or by the STO devs. the steam version of STO no longer freezes up after toon selection. HURRAY!!
