A potentially controversial lockbox suggestion

I'm not going to lie, this idea is going to be unpopular, I am not even all for it, but I think some good things could come of it, and it's worth discussing at least. And by that, I mean Cryptic should start selling ship skins.

These would simply be skins of existing C-Store and Fleet ships, no ability or stat changes, simply cosmetic skins just like what we already have. Only these would offer crazier options like more paint options, different materials, camouflage paint, symbols, Gold Pressed Latinum colours, etc.

While this could result in some really ugly and garish ships, pink camoflage is a terrifying idea, I believe that ship customization is... lacking, and this would give Cryptic an excellent opportunity to fix/retexture/rebalance older C-Store ships. I have no idea how well they would sell, or how Cryptic would even implement the option, it could be a good thing I don't know.

What they should do instead, is give us Ship Costume Unlock Projects, akin to what we have for ground: you own full space set X, you get to wear 'skin' set X (if you do the unlock project).

    Clean and simple.

While I agree that there should be a wider array of options for ship customization, in the grand scheme of things, its very low on the priority tier. To me as well as to the devs. It needs to be a back burner project, something that can be done later on, or worked on here and there on the side, but it defi itely shouldn't be a priority right now.

You, sir, have hit the nail on the head. Put ship hull cosmetics in the rep.. Undine Hull Pattern. Full Borg Hull Plating. Etc. No stats, just developer controlled surfaces. Avoid player coloured ships at all cost, it would be goodbye IP.

I think they actually used to do something along those lines... then season five came along, Fleets were introduced and the C-Store 'Ship Costumes' were given to the 'Fleet' versions of ships and all that was left was the NX Registry.

Personally, I'd like more Mirror Universe skins (Especially for the NX, TOS Constitution and Defiant, since those classes actually appeared in the MU on the shows), but I concede them as being unlikely since we get Mirror ships in lockboxes already... Of course, they're also T5 ships and since they've already said no T5 NX or TOS Connie, maybe it would be possible after all.
(I've tried just using the existing color patterns; a couple patterns come close, but the 'yellows' are too tan for the vibrant yellow we see on NPC Terran ships)
Or maybe the older Constellation-class skin (as seen on TNG with Stargazer and Hathaway) for the Heavy Cruiser...

(Of course, I'm also still wanting 'race specific' bridges for the Vulcan and Caitian ships for the Federation and the Gorn, Nausicaan and Orions KDF ships... and maybe a way to get rid of that blasted fishtank in my ready room, so I'm not new to wanting to see things happen that likely never will.)
"If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross; but it's not for the timid." -- Q, TNG: "Q-Who?"
^Words that every player should keep in mind, especially whenever there's a problem with the game...

New ship skins that make sense will be put into the C-Store. It is just too bad that the current ship skins were removed. The Lockbox is limited to content that makes absolutely zero sense for us to have. So the ship skins would have to be really crazy to be put into Lockboxes. This is the one point that makes Lockboxes tolerable. If they start putting stuff in the Lockbox that should be in the C-Store, then STO has lost my respect for it.

cryptic will never sell ship skins through c-store anymore, it doesn't make sense to sell a ship skin when they can sell it as an entire ship for 2500-5000 lol, or even worse, make it a "fleet skin" like the nomad/comet/imperial/etc.

controversial? not in the slightest, but from a practical stand point, i doubt the developers have the resources and time to create something so non relevant.

That's what I thought as well. Just an idea, which has some merit, but doesn't seem controversial at all.

Controversial, in my opinion would be something like a TRIBBLE lockbox. Uniform options from "patterns of force", mauser and mp40 ground weapons, Ekosian and Hirogen Doffs (including Vosk as a handcrafted one), Photonic Hirogen Boff with uniform options from "The Killing Game", stuka with lasers (small craft or vanity pet) from "Storm Front" etc...

following an immediate ban of the game (or ramping it's rating up to MA) in most European countries. ;I)
