Dunno what the fuss is about...

I just finished getting together the dyson set complete with the polaron protonic weapons and the autotargeting tactical modules.

Now keep in mind I play PVE only I'm not big on the PVP at all so this post will be only about PVE concerns.

I've been through multiple PVE 5 mans now, fought the borg the elachi (was missing only the engine to my set when i fought some of these)....Not seeing a weakness here. Really I'm not.

I'm a science captain and until now, the science ships save for the Temporal were subpar imo. This dyson set however changes everything. Now I know some of you have posted about the damage increase or lack thereof on these consoles and I gotta say it would be nice to have them fix that to the 8% more per tactical autotargeting module but even without that it seems to be plenty for the typical PVE player that's not interested in anything other than doing the I and II difficulties.

They could make these consoles on par with those people typically use + 28% Polaron dmg instead of +20%.

I have these:

Dyson_Joint_Command_Technologies

Protonic_Arsenal

Polaron_Auto_Targeting_Module

In my engineering slots (because I have the universal consoles for the shield abilities in science) I have the romulan Uconsole, the Nukara.

I'm not seeing why people are complaining. Perhaps they have some code that makes these sets work together a bit better than their tooltips claim because I've had great results from these. The beam alone is worth it because not only does it bounce back and forth between my cannon and beam skills but it also does them tremendously faster than any other beam. So I am actually able to time perfectly a subsystem to shield attack and a short quick torpedo barrage whereas before either the delay would be too great before setting it off, or the torpedos would arrive too late and the enemy shields would be back up.

This is a great setup imo.

people typically use the tac consoles that give 30 or 31 or whatever % damage + crit chance.

That makes the hybrid (type+proton) sort of junky.

Which means either gimping your other weapons to use the proton weapon or the proton weapon is left as a junker that is slightly better than a turret. Protonic poloran does make the best of trying to use the junker cannon, but rep weapons have a slightly lower base damage than fleet. So you are now using a lower damage cannon with a lower damage console to force fit the junk proton cannon into doing a half decent damage.

That said the dyson is a decent ship. The rom one is awesome --- valdore console & singularity powers & cloak make it a solid hybrid tac/sci ship.

But even the rom one is sub par for the individual roles. For *every* faction:
the veteran fleet destroyer is a better 4/3 weapon ltcmdr sci hybrid. For the kdf, several BOP are also much superior to the dyson. So the tactical mode is pretty much a fail.

Now in sci mode, there is nothing else like it, its a nice ship for that. Cmdr sci ltcmdr tac with cannons is pretty unique and solid.

So IMHO tac mode is total fail, but sci mode is a winner. Because swapping to tac mode now and then is weak, you have to dedicate the build to running in tac mode if you want to have something that resembles high dps. If you do that, it is still inferior to the other ships that have a ltcmdr sci or uni slot.

There are several problems about the proton build. One of them is the price. You need a lot of dil and marks to make your build, between the polaron weapons and the rep set items. And in the end, it's not that effective.
Then you have everything that was already said by the poster above.

[QUOTE=the1tigglet;16292171The beam alone is worth it because not only does it bounce back and forth between my cannon and beam skills but it also does them tremendously faster than any other beam. [/QUOTE]
I don't see a lot of effective build where you have both cannons and beam skills. The only one I can think of, is a pure torp/DHC build with a single DBB for a BO spike/alpha strike/shield stripping. But in this case, you are using the DBB for the BO, obviously, and not the rep beam.

This is a great setup imo.

I don't have access to the fleet tac consoles, but i put something very similar together on a free Fed dyson ship.

The space set from the dyson rep is a decent one.

Combining the experimental proton weapon with some protonic polaron weapons also works.

However, what I found was things got more efficient when I switched to a different ship.

I've got this rig sitting on a Risian Corvette at the moment, dumped the protonioc polaron weapons and just paired it all with phaser cannons, phaser tac consoles and the PDC for gits and shiggles.

    Fun on a bun.

I use pretty much the same build, except I fly the Fleet Intrepid, so all my damage comes from GW3+TS2. I do have to say, if you're specced into using GW3 like I am, using the Grav Torp is an insane boost in damage. I found myself absolutely melting the cruisers in MIE with said combo.

It's certainly one of the better/best reputation sets in the game.

You know there is a video on Trolltube, with a guy is running this build (pretty much) on the Rom Dyson, and in all honestly, I cant see a problem with it either!

I'm not saying it's THE be all and end all of ships, and you may be able to come up with a few differences, but all round it's totally solid, and well worth the effort (and money) I agree with the OP, stop trying to be the leetz, umtimatz DPS'z and stuffz and just have FUN!

Yeah, its only really an issue for min maxers.

Even then, we're not talking a terrible issue.

The rep space set is very decent, the weapon set has some excellent points and the proton weapon is a bit of a curveball.

Speccing into it means, by virtue of the kit available in game, speccing into a specific, indeed unique, weapon type.

However, if you stick it on as an entirely standalone weapon it can actually be a lot of fun.

This all works even better if you step away from the Dyson ship and go with something else.

I have a voth bastion cruiser on my fed tac,
Full dyson set, protonic polaron top tier (took some doing bit was a fun project).
I have it to tank (as much as a tac can I know), have elite voth fighters on it,helsman trait, fleet res all xii eng consoles, all rep consoles, and did a pvp with a fleetmate.
He had a fed dred build with the same set and we flew around for hours until we got bored. I split my tac consoles between fleet and rep.
I wouldn't say this is a great build considering some of the pvp stuff out there, but it kicks TRIBBLE in pve if you like to keep stuff close to the ship you are building.
