generalmocogeneralmoco Member Posts: 1,634
So when exactly are we going to get the new STO Vbulletin forum update.... I saw a couple months back that Brandon mentioned that the STO forums where going to be updated to the version that neverwinter was at.... Its been a couple months now and we've yet to receive the update....

What happened???

Any word from the website/forum team at PWE'S end???

EDIT: It has been more than a year since Brando mentioned the update http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=437071&highlight=vBulletin+update

This. Back at home, I can use the Chrome color thing. However, on this tablet (which only has IE, darn you Windows 8.1-R), I am stuck to grey.

The faster we get an update to this........ oddly-picked design (that is putting it politely), I will be happy.

Oh trust me, for specific reasons I've been nagging about this as well lol. It's still in the works AFAIK just not a super high priority I'm sure.

Yeah I just realize that the update was not mentioned a couple months ago but almost 2 years ago and yet still nothing. :'(

Does it take two years to update a forum to a newer version... Makes me ponder, is ARC the reason why it was put on hold???

From what I figure (I can't say either/way as I have no actual intel on the process) it very well could be as they're redoing not just a software client but a lot of web stuff to manage client/character information.

Again, no real intel on the process or what the hold up is that's just my best educated guess.

If it was just a forum upgrade and there were no database tie-ins to the games and other PWE and Cryptic account systems like billing then it could be done in less than a day (I've administrated IPB, vbulletin, and PHPBB forums). With all of that other stuff, well I don't really know since the public isn't privy to how their internal databases and software are set up but it definitely wouldn't take a year. :P

It could be completely compartmentalized, making forum changes irrelevant to all that other stuff (and therefore easily updated like any standalone forum), or it could be deeply embedded like that blood vessel in your inoperable tumor (making it a nightmare to update)! Realistically it's probably a combination of really low priority* and internal politics** that have kept this from happening. Who knows, all we can do is speculate. :P

*(if it ain't broken right now, don't "fix" it, especially when we have new content, ongoing support, and other priorities)
**(like needing to roll the update out to all PWE forums at once, or not hiring enough sysadmins, exacerbating the above issue by spreading resources too thinly)

Just been to the NW forums... They look exactly like these (except more messy)...?

What is it that makes it so great compared to STO forums?
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

What do you think happened? The Almighty Metrics™ didn't show big money to be made from it, so it was put on the back burner. No, I mean the back back back burner- in fact the lack of profit shoved it past the back burner and it fell off the stove completely. Maybe it'll be re-added later. ;)

I hope that they'll have a automatic mechanism to lock threads after X amount of days.

I hope its sooner rather than later, these forums lack basic functions that should be pretty standard in 2014. Like image embedding for example. Or being able to choose a colour that is not eye unfriendly.

image embedding was turned off a long time ago. It's not that it's missing, it's deliberately turned off except in the art forum.

Ah well it still seems rather an odd thing to do on a forum in this day and age unless there is some technical issue, possibly with mobile or something like that, the forums don't seem to play nice with mobile browsers.
