Trainable Abilities

flash525flash525 Member Posts: 5,441 Arc User
I've been using the source that is the STOwiki, though I know it isn't always accurate. I spent an hour or so yesterday, and some time this morning trying to get a couple of my Bridge Officers trained up with certain skills, to no avail. Either the ones I'm asking for aren't actually possible, or nobody has them.

Suppressing Fire 3 for example, on the STOwiki it says it's trainable, though I was told in fleet chat earlier that it isn't. If anyone here is on and able to assist me, I'm looking for the following:

Engineering:
Shield Recharge 3 (lt.cmd ground ability)
Equipment Diagnostics 3 (cmd ground ability)

Science:
Electro-Gravitic Field 3 (lt.cmd ground ability)
Sonic Pulse 3 (cmd ground ability)
Tachyon Beam 3 (lt.cmd space ability)

Tactical:
Suppressing Fire 3 (cmd ground ability)
Overwatch 3 / Stun Grenade 3 (cmd ground ability)
Beam Fire at Will 3 (lt.cmd space ability)
Attack Pattern Beta (cmd space ability)

Above lists are providing said abilities actually exist/are trainable. I'm in-game now, so post here, or throw me a PM (stark@flash525) if you can help. Thanks!

Tachyon Beam 3 (Flow caps) is trainable and packs quite a punch on the shield stripping department if you spec into it.

Scramble Sensors 3 (Countermeasures) is also trainable and if a sci captain decides to use it in his build and spec heavily into it, quite annoying.

Most of the players can't train those ground abllities simply because almost nobody specs (enough) into ground abilities.

As for BFAW3, i think almost any TAC captain you ask should be able to provide it to you, since Energy Weapons is a quite common skill.

For Suppressing Fire 3 isnt that trainable by Tac Captains once you put 6 points into Advanced Tactics? Admiral Tier Ground skill. Use the wiki color code chart and also use your skill tree to let you know what eng/sci/tac captains are capable of training once you have put X amount of points into a skill tree. Or you can use the skill planner on sto academy and just click on the powers to see (if any) abilities are trainable if you assign x points.

PS i'm not in game atm, so i would double check for yourself since i am going off of sto academy

EDIT: here are a few more i was able to find...again double check in game for yourself on the appropriate Captain (eng/sci/tac) because i'm using STO academy. And i say make sure you are on the right captain, because their ground skill trees are different and will change, therefore their trainable skills will change too.

-Shield Recharge 3 - Engineer Captain, LCdr tier, Repairs

-Equipment Diagnostics 3 - Eng Capt, Admiral tier, Modification Specialist (but it only shows #2?)

-Electro Grav field - Sci Capt, Capt tier, Probability Logistics???

-Sonic Pulse 3 - Sci Capt, Admiral tier, Particle Physics

-Tachyon Beam 3 - Sci Capt, Lt tier, Starship Flow Caps (space)

-Overwatch 3 - Tac Capt, Capt tier, Squad Command???

-BFAW 3 - Tac Capt, LCdr tier, Starship Energy Weapons (space)

This is kinda weird because your number of posts and your join date is throwing me off. I figured someone who's been playing as long as you should know this. BUT, have you never messed around with training your own boffs until now? i dont mean going to the boff trainer npc, i mean using your captain to train boff abilities. This is the only thing i can think of that would cause you to overlook where some of these abilities are trained from. Some of them are actually easy to find like BFAW or the other space ability. IIRC for those, it doesnt matter which captain you are on it will show you '6 ranks on a tac captain can train bfaw 3' or something to that effect. With the ground abilities i can understand why it can be overlooked if you are looking for a Sci ground ability and you are on a Eng captain for example. But not the BFAW

p.s. not trying to flame you or humiliate you, I mean...I didnt mess around with trading boffs to other people for training until my 2nd year playing.

Yeah you must be playing the STO in another universe created by Q because the only time these skills pack a punch is when the NPCs use them against the players or the players are flying an NPC ship like in the Solanae mission or the First Contact day mission.

These skills and many others need a serious upgrade to match what's happening with consoles in the game for the purposes of balance. And no the enhancements that come from a secondary deflector array or a dyson science console do not make up for it's shortcomings.

OP yes it is a problem, many of these skills are not specced into because they typically are useless on many levels, speccing into some of them on the skill tree is a death sentence for many ships especially science ships, and many of the players don't have the luxury of being long time science captains to work around the problems that the lack of concern for the balance of these skills has caused or the ships like the Solanae or Dyson ships that add help in keeping their shields up while using them.

In my universe, tachyon beam 2 works fine and the 3 version is a shield's worst enemy. Then again, most captains refuse to join my vision of the universe.

I also like the universes with massive grav wells, ultimate sensors, and killer feedback pulses. Not my fault sci ship builds are mostly DPS first and sci usefulness comes dead last.
