Can STO be downloaded on an iPad or tablet? Not an app, but the actual game.

I'm pretty sure that certain elements of the game controls (e.g. moving your character on the screen, crouching and kneeling, etc.) require a keyboard and preferably a mouse as well. Other than that, STO will probably run on anything that can run Windows XP or newer (or Mac OSX) and has at least 2 gigabytes of RAM, 10 or so gigabytes of free storage space, and sufficient CPU and graphical processing . STO is NOT available for IOS or Android, and requires WINE to run on Linux-derived platforms.

In short, if you have the hardware power, RAM and storage space, have a keyboard, and are running Windows, Mac OSX, or Linux with Wine, you should be able to run it as far as I know.

Assuming a windows tablet had the input devices, that would make no sense because then desktops and laptops could only play STO on windows 8 and I'm on 7 on my laptop.

Windows 7 and older tablets are pretty rare, but they can run STO, too if they meet the requirements. Windows RT tablets can't, though. They require executables to be compiled for ARMv7 processors, not x86 or x64. Surface tablets run Windows RT, Surface Pro runs Windows 8 proper.

I am not familiar with iPads, but since the operating is not OSX, then I would say no.

Android tablets...? No, since the game is not designed to run on Android OS.

Windows 8 / 9 tablets? That ranges between possible and yes. The current incarnation of Windows 8 tablet using Intel's Bay Trail Atom CPU might be powerful enough to play STO at 1366x768 resolution, but you will need to attach the Win 8 tablet to a monitor, keyboard and mouse. The monitor is optional, but recommended since trying to play a game like STO on an 8" screen is not very feasible... at least in the long run. A keyboard and mouse would be necessary since the game is not designed for touchscreens... at least to the best of my knowledge.

Then you need to deal with battery life. In order to use a keyboard, mouse and monitor with Win 8 Tablet you need to buy a USB hub and connect it to the USB port on the tablet. The USB port is also used to charge the tablet and based on how these Win 8 tablets are designed you cannot charge the tablet and USB port to connect other devices at the same time.

Getting back to the Bay Trail Atom CPU... while it is certainly more powerful than the previous generation Clover Trail CPU, it is probably a bit too weak to play STO on minimum settings... that is just a guess. Bay Trail only has 4 graphic cores based on the Intel HD 4000 graphics core ; if I am not mistaken. Therefore, it does not have much graphics processing power. Additionally, the Atom CPU is limited to a max of 4GB, however, all Win 8 Tablets are only shipped with 2GB of RAM, this is because for the moment the Win 8 OS for tablets is limited to 32-bits. It is not really feasible to upgrade the RAM since it is soldered in.

Cherry Trail is Intel's successor to Bay Trail and will provide better processing power and a more powerful graphics core. It also shrinks the die process down from 22nm to 14nm which means lower power consumption and lower production costs. In terms of processing power Bay Trail is about 2x more powerful than Clover Trail, but I am not sure what the performance increase is going to Cherry Trail. I have not started researching that yet. The number of graphic cores will increase from 4 to 16 if i am not mistaken and it will be the graphics cores from the current generation Haswell CPUs; meaning it will be some derivative of the Intel HD 4400 / HD 4600 graphic cores.

Cherry Trail is likely to be released towards the end of this year. Intel has not released any solid info about the release date that I am aware of. Windows 9 is also speculated to be released later this year so it is very possible that Windows 9 tablets will feature a Cherry Trail generation Atom CPU and would be the best tablet to wait for if you hoping for a tablet that is capable of running STO.

There is also the supposed "Willow Trail" generation Atom CPU that is rumored to be coming out in early 2015 (which makes Cherry Trail a "stop gap" CPU) as Intel continues to accelerate improvements upon the 14nm die process for Atom CPUs. It will be a new CPU architecture for the Atom CPUs and so far there has been no official estimates of how powerful that CPU will be.

    Oh...

If you wish to purchase a Windows 8 tablet that uses a mobile version (i.e. laptop) of the current generation Intel Haswell CPU, like the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 tablet which uses a Core i5-4200u CPU, then yes, you will be able to play STO.

I currently have a 15.6" Dell Latitude 3450 which I currently use to play STO. It has a Core i5-4200u CPU which means it also has the Intel HD 4400 graphics core. The laptop actually has a dedicated Radeon HD 8850 graphics chip (between the performance of a nVidia GT 750m and GT 755m). However, I tested the capabilities of the Intel HD 4400 for a couple of days.

I have found that 1600x900 resoluition using low graphic settings tends to offer the best performance when using the Intel HD 4400. Bumping up the resolution to 1920 x 1080 or using medium graphics settings tends to result in performance that is too low to make playing STO enjoyable (at least for me). As for the Radeon HD 8850... I just tend to max out the graphic settings.

Especially tablets with Windows OS, like Microsoft's Surface Pro, are able to run STO.

Supposedly it works off of the top of the line windows tablet.

Years ago I got it to work on an android tablet extremely poorly. But I was able to do doffing.
I think I warped into kerrat but then the day started to go south pretty quick after that.

A few weeks later I couldn't reproduce it.
Should I start posting again after all this time?

I doubt STO will ever do this. If it were to be done at all it would probably only be good for doing Doff missions, playing on the Exchange, Bank etc. It would probably have to be in a form where you wouldn't even see your character, it would just be an interface to access these simple processes.

The reason I think STO wouldn't make it is first the cost to develop this app for at least 2 platforms. Second, it would allow players to earn more Dil, EC and decrease the need to purchase as much Zen. Not to mention it might have the affect of F ing the Exchange with inflated prices bc of flippers.

When i am on the road, i use a $250 8" tablet running Win8.1 to play STO. Not going to advertise here.

Now, i still use an external bluetooth keyboard & mouse. Full touchscreen control may be possible, but the interface doesnt seem designed for it.

Considering the fact that i fly torpedo boats, control responsiveness is pretty important. An 8inch tablet with keyboard and mouse are adequate to run the game.
