Are torpedoes still relevant with the Cutting Beam installed?

captpeacemakercaptpeacemaker Member Posts: 230 Arc User
It occurs to me that the Cutting Beam deals Kinetic damage almost continuously to a target in a 360 firing arc. So as soon as the enemy's shield facing is down, it begins damaging the hull.

This occurs much faster than turning the ship to fire torpedoes and hope that shield facing is still in the firing arc of the torpedo and that its still down by the time the torpedo gets there. This is especially true for cruisers.

So would it be more worthwhile to mount the cutting beam aft and put another energy weapon up front, therefore increasing the effective Dps rather than having an under-used torpedo launcher taking up a weapon slot?

The cutting beam is great, I think I run it on all my ships...

but Torpedo Spread 3 is a massive and viscerally satisfying number of explosions in ways that the cutting beam will never be.
Please reconsider ARC. Please make it optional, at the least. PLEASE.
It seems the vast majority of your most active players (forum regulars) hate the idea... and while that's a small subset of the playerbase, I think it's an important constituency.
THE PLAYERS DO NOT WANT THIS.

Depends, I have gravity well on my vesta setup and I use the Cutting beam in the aft (it still fires forwards I've noticed) and then put the dyson torp in the front to act as my second gravity well (enhanced with High yeild). At least it's still viable for me.

I agree that having and firing torpedoes is visually appealing.

But as far as effectiveness, it seems like the cutting beam is a better way to deal kinetic damage.

When you can post a log of a Cutting beam doing this... I will agree that it is the ultimate kinetic weapon. Something tells me I won't be able to do 356k in 2s with one.

Go for it and tell us how it works. Torpedoes are nearly irrelevant as it is anyways (at least in PVP).

      This... 1000000% this. :D

Its especially true when you're using the gravimetric torpedo on a group of ships caught in a GW. lol

Depends on the Torpedo. Quantums and the Borg Torp are still useful, others not so much.

grav torpedo is the best if you have enough points into particle generators. with TS3 and GW it's crazy strong.

was gonna state, the dyson torp with spread 3 and a grav well, scramble sensors can ridiculously outclass a cutting beam. so you tell me is the cutting beam strong enough to challenge that?

I haven't seen that one often. I'll have to look into it.

Actually, if you're already specced into GW it works like a secondary.

Especially on torp spread, very nice weapon.

Thinking of putting one on my adapted BC, along with GW3, the elachi subspace thingy, the nanite console, the nukara rep active and sensors/BFAW, i'm thinking that a grav spread on top of all that will make my AOE death ball complete

Okay, not in PvP. But in PvE it's great.

Interesting. That might be a good idea considering Cryptic hates 1v1 matches.

Variations of it, with the omega torp on spread as opposed to the grav, have been quite useful in MI.

The blinding effect of the elachi console is particulary useful.
