New ESD

First off, WOW. Holy effing TRIBBLE wow. Stunning work and really makes the outgoing ESD seem tame by comparison. It's gorgeous, and really feels like Star Trek.

One thing I miss though, what happened to Club 47? Everything else is there but no officer's club. Could we get one? I don't expect you to revamp the current map to force a club in there, but there are turbolifts so "Level xx - Officer's Club" doesn't seem like an impossibility to hope for.

Something to think about for the future, I hope. Anyhow, thank you for the beautiful map!

    It looks decidedly good. :)

Last time I checked, though, shuttle bay was kinda unfinished: the deeper in you go, you'll find textures and glass missing. I even managed to fall out of the space station when the glass was more absent than I thought!

That's because when it goes live, the shuttle bay will be properly bounded and blocked as you're not supposed to get beyond the vista that lets you look out across it.
If you feel Keel'el's effect is well designed, please, for your own safety, be very careful around shallow pools of water.

The shuttlebay is no longer accessible.
The Club is going to be added after Season 9.

That's quite the paradox, how could you nerf nerf when the nerf is nerfed. But how would the nerf be nerfed when the nerf is nerfed? This allows the nerf not to be nerfed since the nerf is nerfed? But if the nerf isn't nerfed, it could still nerf nerfs. But as soon as the nerf is nerfed, the nerf power is lost. So paradoxally it the nerf nerf lost its nerf, while it's still nerfed, which cannot be because the nerf was unable to nerf.

I call it, the Stoutes paradox.

So where EA's stock, considered-officially-theirs response is "Soon™," Cryptic can now be considered to have trademarked "Coming Back Later™."

There's actually some brilliance there...give'em a year or so more, and they'll have 3 years' worth of planned content just putting back everything they took out.

I'd suggest a nice big "CLOSED FOR REMODELLING" sign up where the club will be located, until it gets added.

When you visit the shuttle bay on Tribble it is complete. However, it's been shared to player's that our access to it is limited by design. Something like a pool of crisp, clean water. But with signs that say No Swimming. Something that, IMO, I find decidedly odd for a four year old Star Trek game. Well. Unless you buy one for your fleet starbase, I guess?

Now that's a shame. :( It was a beautiful area. I love walking about in it; kinda like in shipyard at Romulan Command (only prettier).

And some might think I am being too harsh, but you are not a dev -- not by any stretch of the imagination. So you have no say in any of it.

Also, I've seen no one complain. Ere the opposite: people, like yours truly, kinda sad because it was a very beautiful area, though.

One could take the viewpoint that all of the work that had been put into the shuttle bay could have instead been put into Club 47, an area that would have been accessible to players and put the shuttle bay vista off until later, since we already have the docking bay view to give us a clear sense of the scale of the station.
I won't lie and say I don't lean towards that opinion, this would not be a issue if both features were going in from the outset, but as things are, as good as it looks, the shuttle area is something of a superfluous feature, whip cream and a cherry on a cake that already has 3 inches of icing and a fruit filling, the Club could have been used for the same purpose, to give the station a sense of scale and if anything was going to be delayed due to time constraints it should have been the feature that players would not have had access to anyway. That's my opinion anyway, it doesn't matter now since it seems the decision to go this route was made long before this every made it to Tribble.

There are logical reasons why the shuttle area should be inaccessible but I would like to see some NPC personnel working down there, manning a console or standing with a clipboard inspecting a stack of cargo, etc. It's too bad they can't animate the floater pallets being moved around but I imaging the pathing would be a royal pain.

That's a nice idea, but it doesn't work in practice. The shuttlebay was always intended to be viewed from afar, not run around in. As such, many shortcuts were taken in it's construction. It doesn't have to hold up to close scrutiny, so we can build things quicker and sloppier. It is a Hollywood set. As such, in total, the Shuttlebay was only about 3-5 days of actual Environment work. There is no way we could have come close to building the club in that amount of time. The club is a place that people are intended to run around within, jump on, sit on, dance in, etc. It has to hold up when you are staring directly at it, from 3 feet away. As such, it needs much more refined work, and that takes a much longer time.

Ok I have a question: the area where it says 'Take Shuttle to Starfleet Academy'... could we actually materialize inside SFA's Shuttlebay that we saw in the new Fed tutorial? I find it weird that when I use the ESD Shuttlebay to go to SFA, I just beam down.

I've run around down there in the shuttle bay and wholeheartedly agree with Taco. I've also gone across the upper walkway and jumped around the barriers before they were really finished. I've gotten stuck in many places, in between walls, up by the worker bees in the top right of the shuttle bay, and fallen through space... all forcing me to beam out and back in. I've loved every minute of it... While it looks breath taking from the main platform as you walk into it, the rest is less and less refined as you go further down the shuttle platform.

This is how Golden Gate bridge at SF academy is. The bridge is barely the width of a car at the other end... I went out there before they locked that map down and tried to run jump all the way across the bridge... It's amazing how these artists can build these maps and use perspective to trick you into believing what you think you are seeing. I don't have an artistic bone in my body... so it's really amazing to me. I just don't know how you do it and you should demand a pay raise just cause....

I have to say thank you to Cryptic for giving us the test server and even demo record... It allows us to really check this stuff out knowing that we were never intended to do the things that we get away with on Tribble and that we may never get the chance again once development of the map is complete. I can't speak for everyone, but it makes me appreciate the work even more. If the shuttle bay took three days, I can't imagine how long Taco and the others have been working on this map.

This would be nice, we know that maps exists... I forget from what mission, but it was an awesome one.

I asked Taco this last week on Tribble. I forget his exact words but if IIRC, he indicated this was not planned (though I suppose it could be planned at some point). He did say that the Academy map with the shuttle pad facility from the tutorial is actually a separate map from the social zone, and it would take some work to switch them out. The one we currently have as the social zone does not have things like that shuttle pad or Taggert's office.

^This. And please not "materialize" aka beam-effect. Just have the cahracter "spawn" in the shuttle bay room seen in the tutorial.

And the reality is this ... you would look at it, grasp at its beauty and ... never come back to it because there would nothing there you could do there, this is the "new area smell" were people would flock, look, point, talk and then ignore it when the "new area smell" goes away, things do need some utility otherwise they arent used outside "what is this?"

Then add some utility to the Shuttle bay. :) Like put the 'Select Ship' stuff there; or something else.

I understand it's not going to be used, though. Just wish it were, is all.

No club yet? Hmm... No offense, but I'm not really fond of you guys releasing stuff that, well, isn't really ready for release yet. I'd rather you just waited until it's done, and then spring the full version on us. Less bugs that way too.

Well, I had two options here. Try to do the club as well, and end up with everything at 60-70%. . . or postpone the club, and bring everything else up to 90-100% before S9 release.

Overall, I appreciate the quality of the work in these environment maps. I'm in favor of the later. Postpone the club and bring everything else up to 90-100% before S9 release. Club 47 can reopen for Season 9.5 or sooner if opportunity presents itself.

Well, in that case, I rather have the 100% version. :)

Btw, are you the one who designed the new ESD? Kudos if you are! It really does look very slick.

I started the redesign prototyping Jan 2nd or 3rd. There was a couple weeks of that, until a whitebox was approved. Then Peter and Adam joined and it's been 2-2.5 months with 3 environment artists since then.
